I Guess I Just Don't Get It Review by: Manhattanite, Dec 18, 2011 |
| Reading some of the other reviews here, I feel I must've missed something. With all the HYPE surrounding this musical and the Tony Awards it got, maybe my expectations were too high. Yes, there's a lot of profanity, but I'm not offended by that -- I hear those words every day (and sometimes use them myself). And I'm not religious, so making fun of religion doesn't bother me. I just didn't feel the show lived up to the hype. If you go, you ... read more should know that it's definitely not for kids. But go and enjoy -- IF you can get a ticket. |

Hilarious, Highly Recommended for the Open-Minded Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Nov 28, 2011 |
| This is a show for the open-minded, those who can accept other points of view - that is, normal people! Great acting, great cast - and so very funny! Loved it, highly recommended. And the auction at the end for Equity Fights AIDS was hilarious! This cast can really think on their feet too, congrats to all on a great show!!! |

Way Way Overrated Review by: Chubby Theater Goer, Oct 21, 2011 |
Best musical? Please. I mean look at the competition, not much going on there. There are some laughs but very sparingly and some just did not work and is totally infantile humor. Nowhere near as funny as Avenue Q. Some of the songs are there only for shock value and I'd be really surprised if not more people are offended by this show. I'm not religious but this show makes fun of religious people particularly Mormons. It ... read more also pokes fun of black people in Africa by serving the typical stereotypical dumb tribal character. None of the songs are memorable and I cannot help rolling my eyes at cliche after cliche. I totally understand humor and importance of that recurring joke but the "I got maggots on my scrotum" line only really worked once and maybe twice. After that it was more like "Yawwwwnnnn...". Avenue Q is the musical that most people compare this to because of its raunchiness but at least the former does not produce laughs via mean-spirited stereotypes. However, if you enjoy low-brow comedy by laughing at Jesus-freaks and dumb black tribe people, this one is for you. |

Fantastic show... must see with the original cast!! Review by: HuskerGyrl, Aug 17, 2011 |
| Saw this last Saturday at the matinee, and it lived up to my already high expectations. I've had the soundtrack for a few months and LOVED it from Day one, and was pleasantly surprised at the surprises that weren't divulged in the soundtrack. I loved the show, thought the music was original and catchy (the kind you sing for weeks afterwards), and the acting was superb. Nikki James' Tony was spot-on and well deserved, and the rest of the ... read more casts' nominations were too! |

Not what I expected. Review by: , Aug 14, 2011 |
| I guess that my lapsed religion, and tireness of predjudices, got to me. The tears flowed often - even a day later. Expected a comedy (thogh, sure , there is humor)but got a wake-up call. Probably why the playbill gives nothing away. Open your heart and GO!! |

Shocked At the Prices Review by: Marshall, Aug 3, 2011 |
| As a native New Yorker and active theatregoer, there are not many prices that can shock me. However, when I tried to purchase tickets for "Book of Mormon", I was willing to sit in the mezzanine, even though I usually like the orchestra. I was shocked that mezzanine tickets (except for the top nosebleed section) were $155, the same as the orchestra. Sorry, but it's another example of producers being blood suckers. Whoever heard of ... read more charging the same outrageous price for the mezzanine as the orchestra, with mezzanine seats not even being as good? I will wait a long time to ssee this show now, just on principle. But the more that people are willing to pay these prices, the more that the producers' greedy ways are validated. |

See it, but see Memphis and Catch Me If You Can First Review by: Atl2015, Aug 1, 2011 |
| Very funny show. But wait for the price to go down. Not worth the hype. It is entertaining - but it should not be the hottest ticket on Broadway. See Memphis or Catch Me if You Can before you see this. I'm not diminishing the fact the show is funny, irreverent, and much like a great South Park episode. It is a very good show - but it did not deserve all the Tony awards. I do say see it - but not first. |

wait for the price to go down Review by: jersey shore, Jul 27, 2011 |
| I saw The Book of Mormon last night. I liked it and it grew on me but I didn't love it. It is funny, entertaining, 2 good male leads with strong voices but it was like a long Saturday Night Live skit. I would recommend it but wait until the demand goes down. Don't pay the huge price tag. |

Review by: theater-goer, Jun 20, 2011 |
This is two plus hours of reasonable entertainment but it never matches the ultra-hype that seems to surround it / It has all the components for a successful musical (good lead singers,a few good dance numbers, and although quite humorous it goes overboard with the (mostly not needed) vulgarities. i thought last years Lend Me A Tenor was just as funny without having to resort to fornication jokes In short, Book of Mormon ... read more is a fun time, but if youre expecting the holy grail of comedic musicals, you will leave a bit disappointed |

Didn't live up to the hype Review by: srbth30, May 23, 2011 |
| Good but not great. I feel like a lot of the hype of this musical is from the older generation who have perhaps never seen this type of humor performed on a Broadway stage. For those who are younger and seasoned South Park/Family Guy fans, you may be a bit disappointed with this. It's funny, but it's not hysterical. The first half drags a bit, but the second half picks up speed nicely. I'd recommend it, but it's not a must-see. |

Not as good as it could be...but good Review by: DoctorJoeE, May 12, 2011 |
Despite the typical early-run gushing you're reading here, Book of Mormon is really quite good. Don't bring little kids, and don't expect to be humming any tunes when you leave; but do expect to laugh, and to leave feeling entertained -- which (as I've said here a hundred times) is the basic idea behind this whole show business thing. The production is quite good, yes -- and very funny -- but I can't help feeling it could have ... read more been substantially better and funnier. However, given the massive anticipatory buzz, I can understand the pressure the creative team must have felt to get the show finished and opened. And it's a moot point anyway, since the South Park connection has already turned it into a money-printing, Tony-winning machine, and will stay one for the foreseeable future. To those expecting your basic South Park fart jokes, you won't be disappointed. To those expecting religious irreverence, even blasphemy, you'll get that too; but the show is not the all-out skewering of religion that I expected. The basic LDS belief, that Jesus appeared in the US after his crucifixion, gets all the raucous mocking you might expect; and the basic overall message is that good people don't need a religion to do good things, just the desire and a bit of ingenuity. However, it's clear that the "elders" would never have gotten to Africa in the first place had the church not sent them there, kicking and screaming -- which might reflect a certain reluctance on the part of the creators to burn all their religious bridges. The show stealer is Josh Gad, last seen writing in longhand with his leg in "Madison County Spelling Bee." This is the role he was born to play. The other standout castmember is Nikki M. James, a good actress, better singer, and star in the making. The "straight man" is Andrew Rannells, who was great in "Jersey Boys" and trying too hard here -- somebody needs to tell him to relax and just be himself.

Good show, but not blown away by it. Review by: knitsafghans, May 4, 2011 |
| Perhaps my expectations were set too high by all the raves. It's a good show. Josh Gad is superb and Andrew Rannells and Nikki James are also affecting. Dancing numbers enjoyable and well performed. Songs were cute but none passed the "walking out of the theater humming it" test. A sweet story but really no depth to either the satire or the drama. I enjoyed it, but am puzzled by the over the top "best thing since sliced bread" reviews. ... read more Too me it was good, not great. |
