Failed Attempt to Capture Chekhov's Genius Review by: Mishkin, Dec 7, 2008 |
I think overall the play left me much unsatisfied and I was rather disappointed with the directing. I did enjoyed the acting and singing of the leads (Tanya and Andrei characters)but what totally killed the show for me was the utter miscasting and misdirection of the titular character. I think the director miserably failed to capture Chekhov's intent: the darkness and heaviness of the demise of a human consciousness. The story is about ... read more a schizophrenic artist who's driven mad by an apparition of a black monk, but instead of a ghostly, creepy creature you get a monk who clumsily stumbles around the stage with perky one liners and smiles reminding you more of a tipsy village fool than an evil spirit. Knowing anything of Chekhov one sees the deficiencies in the director's vision right away: the play insufficiently depicts the suffering a human being through a ravaging disease of the mind that nulls ones ability the to function or love or live. Certain members of the audience actually thought this was a comedy as they kept on laughing throughout the performance. I think at the end the performance left me very disappointed and dumbfounded at the awkward casting and execution. I don't recommend this play.
