This Season Championship just a memory of long ago Review by: Diract 66, May 4, 2011 |
| Impressive cast, impressive acting, Very impressive set, cannot hide the out of date show that people laugh at what in 1972 shocked our audience. I just hope times have really changed, but have they? The racial slurs and jokes in this show as offensive as they are still exist today and these good ol’ boys are still in the backrooms. This boys club comes for a reunion each year at their old basketball coach’s house and at this meeting ... read more each character reveals the demons in their lives. Kiefer Sutherland is cast against (24) type and it may take a while to get used to him. Jason Patric is the comic relief and does nothing but drink and wobble around the stage. Chris Noth again the lothario. Jim Gaffigan a terribly weak Mayor. And Brian Cox the strong hand that still controls their lives, has an excellent overlong speech in the second act that is the metaphor coach whipping his team in to a frenzy to win one for the ‘Gaffigan Gipper’. You boys must stick together is the theme, as all winning teams must do. The acting by all was excellent and each character was believable, but I believe, the star power is what will keep this play running. So, see it soon on its limited run. If this was written today there would be less talk and more action, but would that make it a better play? |

A carefully crafted revival Review by: Legs, Mar 16, 2011 |
| Excellent production, all around; outstanding performances! It helps to have been an adult in 1972 when the play takes place. The situation, people, and dialogue might otherwise seem so dated as to interfere with an appreciation of the play. But this Pulitzer prize winner is both thought-provoking and expertly presented. Those who saw and enjoyed the original production will not be disappointed. p.s. The Times review of Chris ... read more Noth was harsh; he is the perfect Phil. |

Excellent individual actors Review by: claricemartin, Mar 12, 2011 |
| While the actors performed extremely well as individuals, they unfortunately lacked chemistry in ensemble settings - especially during the first half. The other frustrating aspect of this production was the audience. The pointless laughter during scenes that were quite serious happened all too frequently, lending a bizarre aspect to this well-written and well-acted presentation. |

Fun to see actors Review by: brooklynlady, Mar 6, 2011 |
Enjoyed seeing the actors and some of the show was engrossing but overall I was disappointed - not satisfied. It seems to me to be the story of weak men who need each other to survive in this competitive, unfair world. They have an ingrained dislike of "others" and of course have not benefited from our current political correctness. The play and the men seem to take off and want to stand on their own two feet only to be pulled back ... read more to safety by the coach. Seeing the actors was fun. If you want to see them then buy a ticket. |

Don't miss this fantastic performance! Review by: Amanda40, Feb 21, 2011 |
| This was an amazing show! brian Cox, as the coach, steals the show. Keifer Sutherland did a great job playing in a role that was completely out of character. Jason Patric was hilarious as the drunken, sarcastic brother...and Jim Gaffigan did a great job in his debut performance in a serious role. The only person who did not impress me was Chris Noth- not because he wasn't good, but because he played the same charcter in this role, as he does ... read more in all of his movie and television performance. Honestly, I bought the tickets for my husband, and I was not expecting much, but I was wonderfully surprised. One of the best dramas I've seen since "Twelve Angry Men". This is a "Must see"! |

Extraordinary talent on the stage - don't miss it! Review by: from California, Feb 20, 2011 |
| While the language was dated, the themes were contemporary. Who hasn't thought that some past accomplishment was so much better than it really was! these five guys bring it to a whole new level, and they need each other in order to justify their now mediocre lives. Each actor is so accomplished and so in tune with their character, I actually empathized with Kiefer's character when he's told by Chris' character "you're a shabby man". You can ... read more actually see Kiefer visibly deflated by the remark. Extraordinary talent is on the stage, and one should not miss the opportunity to see these five fine actors bringing life to the play. |

Save Your Time and Money Review by: Carol, Feb 19, 2011 |
| The question about the play was why was it revived? How many people live twenty years in the past reveling in one accomplishment? The smartest of the group was the member who did not reune with the others. Although the cast had able actors, the vehicle did little to show their ability except at drinking and fighting. I found connecting with them emotionally very difficult. |

Go see it! A wonderful night of theatre Review by: mdbennett7, Feb 17, 2011 |
| I LOVED it, liked everything about the show, script was excellent (Pulitzer Prize Winner) and the cast was near flawless. Thought Brian Cox was excellent as the coach and all the others played their role perfectly. Unlike the other reviewer, I was not alive when the original opened so I can't compare the two. I find it both interesting and insulting when individuals compare a revival to the original. Judge this revival on its own merits. |

Good Revival, but the Original was better! Review by: , Feb 10, 2011 |
| this was not a bad revival but it does not compare to the original.Richard Dysart was much better in the role of the coach, Cox played it a little over the top.Noth was just as good as Paul Savino as Romano but Charles played a better Mayor.Jason Patrick was very good and Kiefer S. was just O.k.The set weas good. Not a bad production but not great ,ity seemed a little dated. |
