better than expected Review by: , Jan 16, 2007 |
| i also saw tarzan on sunday jan 14. i wasn't expecting much considering some of the reviews. i thought the singing and acting was excellent and so were the special effects. The children in the audience also seemed to enjoy the show very much. Keep in mind this is a disney production and geerd towards the children. Very enjoyable. |

Pleasantly surprised Review by: Vicky, Jan 16, 2007 |
I had read mixed reviews about this show so I didn't know what to expect. My 9 year old nephew wanted to see it so I took him to his first broadway show. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the show. I thought the songs were great. Josh Strickland was great as Tarzan. All the cast gave very strong performances and have wonderful singing voices. They were all very nice at the stage door and gave my nephew their autographs. We had a great time ... read more at the theater.

If you've seen other shows, even at High Schools, think twice about this one. Review by: Disappointed mom, Jan 10, 2007 |
| Saw the show on January 13, 2007. To say this was a great show is being plain mean to anybody considering tickets. I found it painfully boring. I waited and waited for that one moment that I could say made it worth while. After intermission and finding out I still had an hour and so left had me wishing I never asked. I got the tickets on a discount and still feel it was a complete waste of parking and tolls. I took two boys 7 & 8 who are ... read more accustomed to shows. They kept referring to Beauty and the Beast and how there was no comparision. Don't waste your money or time. I should have seen B&TB a second time. My one son was more excited over his Skittles then what was going to happen next.... Which was a bunch of nothing......... |

| Loved this show.....Exciting and Energetic! Saw the show this past Sunday with my 8 year old son and my sister....for both their 1st Broadway show!!! We are still singing ALL the memorable songs from the show and talking about what a wonderful show it is. Josh Strickland and Jenn Gambatese are excellent as are the other actors. |

Major disappointment Review by: , Jan 8, 2007 |
Saw the show Friday, January 5, 2007. The actors had excellent voices but the show itself was slow and boring. Decided on this show based on seeing a staged production at Disney World and assumed it would make a spectacular transition to theater like Beauty and the Beast did. I preferred the Disney World version. There was also a point where they had to stop the show due to a technical difficulty. What a MAJOR disappointment all around. |

NOT THE BEST DISNEY BUT RECOMMENDED FOR ITS BEAUTY Review by: Onlydemi, Jan 7, 2007 |
| Saw the Show on Saturday Jan 6 and sat in the 4th row center with my 8 and 9 year old girls. Opening sequence is AWESOME and BREATHTAKING! Talent is excellent, especially Kala (the ape mom), Kerchak (ape dad) and most particularly Jane. Josh Strickland as TARZAN is wonderful to look at and has a great singing voice, but the acting falls a but short. The butterfly entrance (Jane's intro) took my breath away! The show falls short in ... read more that the scenes go from EXCITING and VIVID, to LONG and BORING (love story sequences). I would recommend but suggest you sit farther back to catch all of the action and vision of the director. I would sit in the mezzanine next time. BTW - 4TH ROW SEATS ARE $250 PER!!! TOO EXPENSIVE FOR THIS OR ANY SHOW!!!!! |

Good not Great Review by: , Dec 31, 2006 |
So I saw Tarzan yesterday and these are my thoughts on the experience. The opening act was amazing! Now here is my opinions on the good and the bad....
Good: 1) The actors were all very talented 2) Disney's Special Effects 3) Opening act was breath-taking
Bad 1) Some scenes dragged and where way too long 2) Audiance full of crying kids 3) Very Expensive Seats
Having said that when i read these reviews ... read more there were people that said this is the best show on broadway. I would disagree with that in a heartbeat. In my opinion Beauty and the Beast was way better than Tarzan but we have seen many shows and this is the only Disney Show we have not seen so we wanted something new. Also, many reviews said this is the worst show ever and i disagree with that too. The Special Effects were very cool to watch and some of the costumes (butterfly, flowers... etc.) were very clever. There were maybe 3 songs that were very enjoyable one being you'll be in my heart. If you are looking for a good broadway show for families i would say go see Beauty and the Beast , If you have seen it go for Mary Poppins or Lion King but if you have seen all of them go see Tarzan. The seats are expensive and i do say sit in the mezz. for cheaper and better views
The show was GOOD not Great so if u have the time give it a go! (get discount tickets!) oh btw the scenery is not as bad as people have said the green didn't bother me and the scenery is always changing |

| I was so excited to see this show when I first heard about it, but after seeing it I thought it wasn't as great as it could have been. There was no set and no great moments or spectacular effects. Of all the wonderful movies Disney has created, they had to choose this one to turn into a B-way show! Sure the music is good but the production was terrible. If you want Disney magic, go see The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast or Mary Poppins. Now ... read more those are great shows! I just hope Disney won't bring High School Musical to b-way or their great reputation is really over. |

Mediocre. BLAH. Review by: Mia, Dec 22, 2006 |
I saw Tarzan on December 20, 2006. Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE Disney fan and also a major theater buff who came to this show with high expectations. I was thoroughly disappointed. This show does not have the magic that BATB and TLK have.
The only good parts of this show were the vocal talent and the stunts. However, they relied too much on said stunts to carry the show. People swinging on harnesses can’t stay ... read more interesting for so long. Plus, often the strapping of ropes to harnesses was sloppy and reminded the audience that they were watching actors. The visual effects were neat but cheap. (It was mostly just interesting lighting effects. And there were no “special effects”…..people swinging on ropes is NOT special effects!) There was no character development and the only emotional content was cheesy, weak, and badly acted. The script in general was just lousy. There were no strong connections between characters. It’s never explained WHY Jane could be in love with an inarticulate ape-man almost at first sight. It made no sense. The only action is boring an rushed. There is no climax or buildup to one. The new songs in the score were poorly done and only took away from the show. Many actors had poor comedic timing and the jokes fell flat. You could tell that the show was somewhat in love with itself if you know what I mean. The direction was poor and the dancing was a mess. The kid playing Young Tarzan was a pitiful singer. They got rid of important scenes (the resolution dialogue between Tarzan and Kerchak?) and memorable characters (the elephant?). Clayton is now a Western version of Jack Nicholson, which frankly does not work. And the set? It’s nothing but a bunch of green streamers covering the three walls of the stage, and a green floor. It was lacking in any “wow” factor whatsoever and I got absolutely sick of looking at it by the end of Act I. The ending was rushed and felt incomplete. After each song clapping felt like a burden because the applause was not well-deserved.
And what was with the plants touching Jane during her “discovery” song? They were definitely feeling her “danger zones” and it made me feel VERY awkward. I also felt awkward watching adults ridiculously try to act like apes and watching Josh Strickland (clearly an inexperienced actor) try so hard to be funny and have his jokes fall flat.
Overall, this show was mediocre. I expected so much more from Disney. You will not enjoy it if you have more than one digit in your age. My dad spent $240 on this show and I felt awful that he wasted his money. The reivewer who said, “I felt as if Disney slapped its name on a poorly conceived, slip-shod production and hoped that people wouldn't see past the "warm fuzzies" that they get when they think of Disney,” hit the nail on the head. The movie is better! The one good thing I can say about it is that it DID get better as it went along. (Act II was better than Act I.)
And for certain pompous positive reviewers: We negative reviewers do not have “closed minds” or “hidden agendas”. The show is just BAD. Get over it!
My advice? Don’t see it. If you want a great Disney show, see Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. If for some reason you DO see it, get half-priced tickets and sit in the mezzanine if you can. If you are in the orchestra you will miss a lot. |
