Wonderful evening! Review by: , Oct 29, 2008 |
Show was fantastic. When they come back do yourself a favor and go. The first reviewer wasn't familiar with tango. Look at the bio of the director and you'll see that he knows the dance. |

huge disappointment, wouldn't want to see it again for free Review by: quickstep, Oct 26, 2007 |
Disclaimer: I'm sure it's in part because it's because I'm a competitive ballroom dancer, but in any case I walked into this show with high expectations, and left hugely disappointed.
I understand argentine tango is a whole diff animal, it's far more about story telling and partnering; and involve far less athleticism, technique than dancesport tango. I walked in expecting to appreciate a different art perform, and to ... read more be emotionally touched. However, I found the choreography to be boringly repetitive, and the lack of athleticism and speed by the performers hard to overlook. Still I could've managed to ignore all that except in a couple places the dancers did attempt--and "attempt" is the operative word--to do dancesport-style waltz and tango, and performed miserably in what can only be described as amateurish arthur-murray level performances. To make things worse, after those out-of-shape dancers butchered their tepid, tedious, and technically-lacking renditions of ballroom style tango; one argentine tango dancer came out and shouted something to the effect of "now this is how tango is done" (roughly translated) and performed to do argentine as if that would illustrate the argentine superiority. Yes good argentine (and for the cost I paid for the ticket, I wanted to see more than good argentine dancing--which many champ level ballroom dancer can pull off with ~a month training) is better than horrendous ballroom tango performed at newcomer-level quality, so what is the point? |
