If you like musicals? Avoid Sweeney Todd, it's total rubbish. Review by: HarryHay, Sep 24, 2007 |
It was rubbish. I took my wife as a birthday surprise, in San Francisco. It was a surprise too. The surprise was how unbelievably awful this production really is. It's frugal. There are no set changes. The same actors grace the stage throughout. The actors are also the musicians. The music is tuneless. The plot hard to follow. It is painful to sit through. If you like musicals, don't be fooled, avoid this one. A total disappointment.

HAD ORCHESTRA SEATS AND COULDN'T UNDERSTAND A WORD Review by: , Oct 2, 2006 |
| Horrible. Period. Took my mom, who loves Patti LuPone and had to make it up to her by getting her tickets to Jersey Boys, which was well worth the money. THIS wasn't. |

It was so-so Review by: Nico, Sep 17, 2006 |
| I went to see this with my family and I have to say that the show was so-so. I am a huge fan of Sweeney Todd and saw the original TV production starring Angela Landsbury. That show was incredible! This was not what I expected. I was disappointed with the set and scenery. It stayed the same throughout the whole show and it annoyed me. The actors are very talented, but the orchestra is the actors. They play right on stage. The instruments get so ... read more loud that I was unable to hear the lyrics and understand the story. I was upset at how some of the actors kept going in and out of their accents and sometimes would not project to the audience. I would say that all the actors there are very talented, but the production/directing was inadequate. It seems it would be better in a community college or a small off Broadway theater. |

Don't waste your time or money. Review by: DP, Sep 2, 2006 |
| Didn't like this at all. When the curtain went up, I thought it was going to be fantastic that the musicians were part of the stage--but by the 4th or 5th song I changed my mind. Musicans should not act. In addition, I couldn't even understand what they were singing for the first few songs...I still have no idea why Sweeney was deported to wherever it was. The scatological and cheap sexual jokes wore out their welcome quickly and the character ... read more development was sorely lacking in my opinion. The musican who played Johanna seemed to be capable of only one facial expression--I seriously thought the character of Johanna was mentally disabled. Patty Lapone and her sassy knee highs were the best thing in the show. My friend hated it so much he left during intermission and after Act II, I left the theater wanting to slit my own throat...lol. |

Super - but best if you've seen it before Review by: kfd, Aug 26, 2006 |
| Saw with husband and 2 teenage boys. We've all seen Sweeney before and the merits of this production were hotly debated. Husband, older son and I thought it was thrilling with greater intimacy possible than the usual productions. Younger son missed the sturm und drang of the larger productions. Regardless - it's definitely worth seeing. Only caveat is that if you aren't familiar with the story/score, you may lose some of what's happening, ... read more particularly when characters are conversing with each other while both facing the audience. But still - go quickly! Patti Lupone is a very difference Mrs. Lovett - darker (both voice and character). Michael Ceveris is super as always. |

Not to be missed! Review by: A.L.D., Aug 23, 2006 |
| There has not been a show on Broadway in years that had me more enthralled and want to go back and see it again and again until the revival of Sweeney Todd currently running on Broadway. I have seen the show twice already and plan on seeing it one more time before it closes on September 3rd. Everything about this production is brilliant from the casting, to the direction, and even the technical aspects. This is a show not to be missed ... read more in its final weeks. I can only say that it truly is a shame that it will be closing so soon. |

I am so disappointed not to be able to see this wonderful show again! Review by: Lily, Aug 23, 2006 |
| This is my favorite show on earth. Buckets of blood and Sondheim's best dark humor. Witty dialogue and songs ranging from chilling to romantic make this show Sondheim's greatest. The sparse production and double-duty of the actors adds reality to the music. I recommend for anyone, even people who aren't very into Sondheim. |

Sweeney Todd - a Must See Review by: Lexi, Aug 10, 2006 |
I just saw Sweeney Todd for the second time ... and the little hairs on the back of my neck stood still throughout the whole performance. I had seen the production with Angela Lansbury when I was a child and loved it BUT!!! This recent production is really something special!!! I loved Michael Cerveris since 'Hedwig and the Angry Inch' and Patti LuPone is amazing, but I was even more impressed with the rest of the cast, especially Manoel Felciano ... read more and Lauren Molina. Having the actors multitask in playing the instruments and doing the scenery gives the production even more intensity - it's like watching a finely choreographed ballet.
The only thing that will be stopping me from seeing this production again is the September 3rd closing. |

Broadway Magic Review by: Bronx4play, Aug 6, 2006 |
| This is an incredible show. The music, singing, and acting was mesmerizing from start to finish. Cerveris and Lupone are great. If the best movie you ever saw was "Spiderman 2", or your favorite tv show is "Elimidate" don't go see it. |

| One of the most exciting shows. Surprisingly beautiful music, great acting and singing. The staging is terrific but minimalist. Cerveris should have gotten a Tony. |

Bad Directing/Production and Good Acting Review by: Eric, Jul 10, 2006 |
| This show would have been good if it were a community theatre production. The amateurish choices in stage and lighting design along with the lack of continuity makes this musical not worth spending the money on. The ONLY thing that kept the show together was the acting. |

An Astonishing Sweeney - musically. Review by: puccini45, Jul 7, 2006 |
| Astounding. I KNOW this score because I conducted it. The orchestra were the actors...no kidding. Everyone played at least one, and some multiple instruments - cellos, bass, violin, flute, clarinet, accordion, trumpets, guitar, percussion, piano. Patti LuPone played the tuba. This production was maybe THE most astonishing musical moment of my life...I still can't believe it...and it was all from memory: singing, instruments...... read more.everything.) However, had I not known the story or the names of characters, I might have been lost in some parts because the set and props were rather static. This production is somewhere between the PBS concert version and the full staged version. |
