Five out of five donuts for this play Review by: Diract 66, Dec 10, 2009 |
It's nice to see a new play(not a revival) on Broadway that has two acts( instead of ninety minutes) that can make you laugh out loud, feel tenderness and empathy, and possibly make you cry. The reality of life is all of these feelings and more, and this is Superior Donuts. We have all been to a shop like the setting of this play and I am sure we might have walked out of this old place as soon as we entered. But what about the lives of the ... read more people inside. This is the story of two lives briefly touching each other and perhaps influencing their futures. The acting by the two Michaels, Michael McKean and John Michael Hall, is superior and sure to be nominated for awards. This play goes from comedy to tragedy so smoothly that we are left hoping that both characters have, indeed,a brighter future now that their lives have crossed. The characters in the neighborhood though you might think overdrawn, are real people and acted in a natural manner by this excellent cast. See this play and then go out an have a donut and talk about how good your life is.

Wonderful evening at the theater Review by: janey, Dec 6, 2009 |
| Went to see Superior Donuts based on friends' recommendations. We were not disappointed. It is nice to see some "new" ideas out there. The play was extremely entertaining. There were many laughs, but the underlying theme was serious. The acting was very good, but Jon Michael Hill was "superior." We cannot wait to see what he does next. He will be nominated for an Tony! |

Great Show! Review by: elbowlini, Nov 8, 2009 |
| Superior Donuts is a superior show! We didn't have the highest expectations going in because we hadn't heard a lot about the show, so we were very pleasantly surprised. The story pulls you in slowly and insistently, until you realize that you have become totally invested in the lives of the main characters. The acting is great, and the show leaves you wanting to see more. The use of profanity is not excessive, and was only used where it ... read more made sense in the story. The show is thoughtful and also intense at times, so if you are looking for a meaningful experience with some light moments thrown in, this is the show for you! |

"F"ing funny? Certainly elicits recognition, screams, and applause from youth in audience! Review by: Dossie, Oct 28, 2009 |
| Was the repeated use of the "f" word really necessary for success of the show? Other than to provoke howls and whoops from the matinee inner city school groups attending, those words were tiresome. The school groups reacted as if they were at a rock concert, yelling and cheering the characters in the play. I was surprised to hear the lead tell the audience it was "amazing", resulting in further screams and seemingly condoning their inappropriate ... read more response. |

Will the real Tracy Letts please stand up? Review by: Realitycheck, Oct 23, 2009 |
| I went to see Superior Donuts solely based on the writer -- Tracy Letts. I was expecting an absurd, hard edged, and shocking play, as I have come to expect from Letts. Well what do you know -- Tracy Letts is a human being? I was utterly surprised by Superior Donuts and very pleasantly so. Mr. Letts apears to be able to write ANYTHING well. Unlike his previous plays. Superior Donuts has a heart as big as the whole outdoors, and ... read more delivers a hopeful, and inspiring production about human beings; their spirits as well as their faults. Great acting! So now I can't wait for his NEXT play -- who knows what that will be -- but I'm sure it will be great. |

LOVED THE SHOW Review by: MAD ABOUT BROADWAY, Oct 23, 2009 |
Loved Supior Donuts The acting was great, especially Jon Michael Hill. It was not only a comedy but a dramatic story as well. I had tears in my eyes at the end. I highly recommend it. The young actor Jon Michael Hill should be doing the advertising to get more people in to see this great show. |

Don't waste your money on this one! Review by: Sue, Oct 22, 2009 |
| So disappointing. We saw this in previews and never thought it would last once it opened. It was awful. The character played by Michael McKean is very cardboardish, but now real change in the character throughout the story. The adolescent has some good lines, but the end of the show is sorely disappointing. I would definitely pass on this one, despite the NY Times review which was better than mediocre.I thought it was far worse. Much ... read more better things to see on Broadway and off! |

A solid show with excellent acting Review by: Frisbie, Oct 19, 2009 |
| I am with the two most recent reviewers, not the first two. Perhaps the first two saw the show when it was still working through the rough spots? I thought this play was very good. The acting was excellent, and the story was engaging--a mix of very witty one-liners and serious plot lines. The audience at our performance gave the cast a standing ovation, so I think in general people are enjoying this show. We certainly did. |

Great acting Review by: sb, Sep 28, 2009 |
| I enjoyed it. It was a little predictable but I thought Michael Mckean and Jon Michael Hill were great. I go to a lot of theater and sometimes you want a show that has characters you actually like and a story that makes you feel better about people. |

The only thing missing was a intro theme song by Jose Feliciano . . . Review by: Broadway Baxter, Sep 18, 2009 |
| Very disappointing show, it was like watching a "Chico and the Man" Christmas show conceived and executed during a writer's strike. All the stock characters are there; love-lorn cop, crazy but wise "bag" lady, haunted shop owner, sassy black kid, and foreign blow-hard with a heart of gold. PREDICTABLE ending. If you're in the mood for a sugar fix, by all means go, but if you are hungry for something more, watch Nick at Nite reruns. |
