Carla Gugino & Blythe Danner make this one a winner Review by: Zach, Jan 10, 2007 |
| I saw this play on Nov 12th '06 and thought it was pretty good overall. I strongly disagree with the previous poster's comments about the quality of acting. I thought the acting was superb by all involved (especially Carla Gugino & Blythe Danner). They were even more impressive here than they are in their respective movies. My only complaint about the play is that it can be kinda slow at times becuz there is tons of dialogue, no set ... read more or costume changes and very little action. But the actors still manage to keep the play interesting and keep you guessing as to what's coming next. If I lived a lil closer, i'd definitely go see it again cuz just seeing the talented & gorgeous Carla Gugino & Mrs. Danner live is well worth the price of a ticket. |

Suddenly Last Bummer Review by: folkyboy, Nov 15, 2006 |
Having tremendous respect for a majority of the actors (and writer) involved in this Roundabout production, I found myself completely apathetic by the performance delivered to me.
The set looked like something out of the jungles of South America instead of 1935 New Orleans and the acting was just way way off! Why oh why do I get the feeling Roundabout is spending all of its money getting “big name” actors to sell its ... read more shoddy delivery? And I felt almost duped by buying into it and actually going to the Laura Pels Theatre to see this show.
It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the piece. I just kept trying to maneuver the actors on stage into a plotline I could understand. The never changing set had me confused as to when the scenes would shift and some of the lines delivered were a bit like they’d been done many many times before.
Someone tell Blythe Danner that walking quickly with a cane doesn’t make you look like an invalid. And Carla Gugino, that a whiny voice doesn’t make me believe your tears. Even Gale Harold was just very stale and unbelievable.
I went to this show looking for something I could sink my teeth into (literally), and ended up almost falling asleep! Were they in the back eating the director?! |
