One of the Best Tragic Comedies on Broadway Review by: Carol, Nov 20, 2011 |
Stick Fly is set in the plush LeVay home in Martha’s Vineyard, not the upper crust black enclave of Oak Bluffs. There is a family reunion of sorts in which Spoon (Kent) LeVay (Dule Hill), the younger son of neurologist Joe (Ruben Santiago Hudson) brings home his fiancé Taylor (Tracie Thomas) to meet the family. Throughout the play fraught with tension, humor, and pathos the relationships between parents and children, siblings, races,... read more, and roles in society are explored. The play revolves around Taylor and her issues with status, class, money, and race. The situation is complicated by human foibles and mistakes of the past that come home to roost. Except for Cheryl (Condola Rashad) whose character is the weak link in the exposition of the plot as she evolves from servile to petulant, the play is one of the most engaging on Broadway even at two hours and fifty minutes. The audience felt for each character, gasping, laughing, and applauding appropriately. The acting is excellent with outstanding supporting roles by Mekhi Phifer as Spoon’s older brother (Flip) Harold LeVay and Kimber (Rosie Benton) as his girlfriend. This play is a must-see.
