African Americans Can Have Dysfunctional Families Too Review by: Lennie, Feb 7, 2012 |
That is what I felt like watching this play and I am an African American. There are basically a lot of flaws with this piece. While the acting is wonderful and yes Condola Rashad deserves a Tony nomination, the script is clunky as all get out. I did agree with one reviewer likening it to a Tyler Perry piece in that it gets very race relations preachy which takes away from the focus of some of the bigger issues confronting these people, ... read more such things as infidelity and abandonment. Had the play focused more on actual family relations it could have been another Long Day’s Journey into Night, or August Osage County. While the African American experience will always be an issue in this country at the moment this play seems dated. It would have been great in the 70s, and while the struggle is not over I do feel that the author missed the chance to write a great play about a family, its secrets and how they deal with external elements. |

Would not recommend too racial for my taste.....and I'm black Review by: , Feb 6, 2012 |
| If you’re into Tyler Perry and that type of stereotypical racially motivated black persons' view of the world, then this show is for you. The audience commentary from the people sitting behind us was not necessary but expected it. It was predictable and cheesy at times but on a positive side the "maid" was funny! |

| I was expecting to see a really interesting and entertaining play based on the reviews I read at this site. I was disappointed. I figure out the plot in no time at all. When it was finally revealed, the play fizzled instead of picking up steam. This was not a good night at the theater for me and I would not recommend this play to anyone. |

A Glimpse of the Vineyard Review by: LoveBroadway, Jan 23, 2012 |
| I attended the show with my family this past Saturday and we all loved it! The acting was superb and it was refreshing to see a play about an affluent,well-educated, African-American family. It was a pleasure to watch the performances delivered by the next generation of up and coming African-American actors. Especially Ms. Thoms' portrayal of Taylor which was very touching. Her performance made me laugh and cry. Bravo!!! |

All star cast delivers a 5 star story. Review by: Rainne, Jan 20, 2012 |
| What a winner. This was so much better than I was expecting. All star cast delivers an all star story. It's a must see for everyone 'cause we all have skeletons in the closet. From the opening curtain until the end we were involved - wondering what would happen next. Make your way to the theater. |

| This play produced by Alicia Keys is a must-go-see-bring-your-friends and family type of production. The story line had me involved early in the play and kept me involved in the lives that were presented on stage throughout the performance. I would definitely go and see this again and I would recommend it as a MUST SEE if you are in New York. This is one of those shows that I would love to be able take my family and friends to see so I hope ... read more that it comes to Chicago for a run. Great talent on that stage!!! |

Excellent acting, excellent story! Review by: shida_girl, Dec 5, 2011 |
| I saw this during the final days of the preview weeks so I can't speak to any changes or adjustments that might be made prior to opening night but what I saw was very entertaining. Excellent acting by a wonderful cast. The set design was fantastic as well. They attempted to tackle race and social issues realistically - it is never one-dimensional or one answer, it is so much more complicated than that. The play doesn't attempt to ... read more answer race-relations or class questions. It just simply puts all of the complexities on the table for you to chew on. It was captivating and well written and staged. My only issue was that it was list for people over 12 and I thought the language would have been a little too harsh for a 12-year old. The parents in front of us ith their pre-teen winced pretty frequently as they watched their 13 year-old. Definitely for adults, not for kids. |
