Not An Everyday Musical, Don't expect Wicked and complain when it gets too serious and real. Review by: StuGame, Sep 7, 2010 |
What people are failing to see is that this isn't a "typical musical", its a drama piece, written in 1891, with a new score, the songs are in the teenagers heads, the piece was written, in 1891 to disturb and repulse, but I saw a production which did this tastefully and you understood the seriousness of the situations, but weren't inclined to leave because it wasn't the most horrific thing in the world. You need ... read more to see where the teenagers are coming from, and understand the history or you will be in the dark. I admit, there were a couple too many issues, but we all have different problems, and Frank Wedekind wanted to show these. Most people who are putting this down have obviously been wanting to watch a bunch of happy-go lucky teenagers, well newsflash, we have problems, and frank Wedekind brought them to light in his writing and Duncan Sheik brought those problems to life in his score. The acting and singing was spectacular, tears came to my eyes a fair few times becuase of the emotion and how dedicated the people were, becuase the actors turned the characters into people who we felt for and cared for. I didn't leave unhappy, I left educated and, I guess you could say wiser, becuase there are a few problems in the Muscial which I related to and learnt from. The amount of songs about hormones and wanting to be "in a relationship", to say lightly, is a good amount, becuase todays audiences are only interested in sex, and any teenagers hiitting puberty are, these songs are at the beginning of the musical, in part, to lull teenage audiences into a false sense that this will be "that kind of show", it then gives issues and teaches and makes the teenagers learn, and it works, very well. Now, go see it if you are smart and want to be mentally inviogrted, and if not, High School Musical is only £3 in Tesco. Maybe these "Happy, Real" kids are more down your streety. |

hated it Review by: mar, Nov 1, 2009 |
i almost walked out during intermission. with so many taboo issues slammed into a single showing, it only made the show contrived and forced, with no room for development of the characters or plot (or even the 20 apparent subplots). i've seen a number of musicals, and this ranks as the worse i've ever seen. the music sucked, the acting was sooooo bad, and the dancing was an embarassing madonna "vogue" imitation. it tried too hard to copy the ... read more edgy-ness of rent, but ended up more like a highschool production.

BROADWAY needs a FULL AWAKENING! Review by: TheatrePro, Aug 7, 2009 |
Well - there are a lot of deluded young folks out there that seem to think that this is the greatest musical ever. So let's break down the truth here. This show is proof that the Tony committee is now nominating shows that make for strong box office and not great theatre. I performed in the play "Spring Awakening" many years ago (first, it's not all that controversial these days). Music - this music is simplistic slop and nothing more ... read more (there are no interesting harmonic or melodic progressions of any kind anywhere), in fact it is pedantic to the extreme (look the word up). The book is frightening niave and overtly vulgar (vulgarity is fine, but not when it panders for EFFECT). Staging - this has to be the WORST choreography that I have ever seen in a musical, period! (moving your arms across your body and endlessly groping yourself does not make for choreography and are an insult to the great choreographers of the past). - Lighting, harsh while trying in vain to be inventive. RENT had more talent per minute then this show could ever hope to have. I fully predict that this show will disolve into history as the most overrated musical in the history of Broadway. NOW, the cast was giving it all they had, but when you have SO LITTLE to work with, there ain't very far to go. Don't waste your money - workshops for 7 years couldn't get this right. |

NO MORE SIGMUND FREUD!!! Review by: Washington D.C., Jul 25, 2009 |
| ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? HOW DID THIS MAKE IT TO BROADWAY? THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST SHOWS I'VE EVER SEEN! VERY VERY POOR PERFORMANCE!!! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY! THE ONLY THING THIS MUSICAL SHOWS IS HOW RIDICULOUSLY CONSERVATIVE AMERICA IS, EVEN THOU IT HAS A GERMAN ORIGIN. THE END OF 18 HUNDREDS IN GERMANY IS A TIME OF SIGMUND FREUD AND THOSE PEOPLE WERE PRETTY FOOLISH ABOUT SEX, BUT THOSE TIME ARE GONE, AND I DON'T THINK THIS MUSICAL ... read more DESERVES TO BE ON BROADWAY OR ANY OTHER REPUTABLE PLACE. HOW THE HECK DID IT GET 8 AWARDS?????????????? |

Take a step back Review by: Green, May 13, 2009 |
I found this play more than a little tedious. It seems that perhaps there was once a good concept at work but it has been too overtly turned towards discussing the importance of sex education. At this time in an individuals life sexual turbulence and frustrations are not the only factors at work

Beautiful and Profound Review by: Clarity, Jan 13, 2009 |
I saw the show with my 13 year old daughter and my husband. We were so moved and had a great talk afterward about the human history of repression and shaming about sexuality. About the responsibilities that we have, as sexual beings, for ourselves and for others. We would like to try to see the national tour of the show this summer in Philly. |

Here's the real scoop... Review by: Andie, Jan 8, 2009 |
This show is amazing. The end. People who think otherwise are one or more of the following: -Too old that they forgot what it was like to be a teenager -Too dumb to see past the exterior of the show -Too close minded -Just stupid. See this show with your parent, spouse, friend, family, just not your 5 year old kid. Be smart. Don't be dumb. Do your research. This show is not for kids. Deals with a lot ... read more of tough topics which can really help open up a lot of discussions for parents & their teens. The show has nudity, strong language, and fog. Think about who you want to take to this show. It's not just about "a bunch of horny, depressed teenagers". People who think that are dumb. And for those of you who think it's unrealistic, stop being so ignorant. In conclusion, it is AMAZING. I've seen it six times. And I'll never get tired of it. |

Spring Awakening A Must See Review by: cliftsnew, Dec 17, 2008 |
| I think this show has potential for greatness. The acting was good, the set production was good, the singing was great at times, sometimes it was more like they were trying to yell. Robert Parrish does a great job, but I was more impressed with the girl who played Ilse, Emma Hunton. Her voice was amazing and I could have listened to her all day. The production team did a great job in casting Gerard Canonico who plays Moritz. Emma and ... read more Gerard together was truly great. I would definatley go see, cause this is truly a must see production. |

Thought provoking and authentic Review by: Mia, Nov 23, 2008 |
I'm not sure what some people think a title like 'Spring Awakening' is intimating but to me it was obvious that it was going to be about the sexual awakening of teens. If you find it uncomfortable to recognize that teenagers are sexual creatures then this musical is not for you. If you recall your own teenagehood and remember the confusion and curiosity around sex, homosexuality, abuse and relationships then you will find ... read more this a thought provoking and entertaining musical. I thought the actors gave a great performance and brought authenticity to the teenage experience. Confronting scenes are not gratuitous and reflect exactly what goes on in the lives of teenagers. I can see why teenagers enjoy this: their stories are being told in frank and adult way. As an adult I found that it conjured memories of my own teen years and first experiences. It's rewarding to engage with art that makes you think and plays with your comfort zone. Interesting stagecraft and use of the set, thoughtful if not memorable songs beautifully sung and great acting made it a worthwhile experience. |

Not what we expected...at all Review by: bostonterrier, Nov 10, 2008 |
| I saw this play with a friend this past Saturday night. All we knew about it was that it had won some Tony Awards in 2007, so we were very, very surprised at how racy this play is. I wish there were a rating system for plays--if there were, this would be an R. There are some VERY explicit sex scenes in this show. While I can appreciate the talent of the cast (they are terrific singers and convincing actors), the story line was depressing,... read more, upsetting and disturbing. Had we known what we were getting into, we would have saved our money and gone to another show. ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TAKE YOUR FAMILY to this one. |
