Everything Rent meant to be....but wasn't. Review by: DramaMama, Aug 6, 2007 |
Amazing.
I was incredibly touched and drawn by almost everything about this beautiful production. The talent alone makes me swoon (and I'm in my mid-40's).
So much was incredibly truthful to the way adolescents perceive life, family and sexuality. Several numbers quickly brought me back to my own adolescence. (Particularly "My Junk")
For all the sexuality presented it was all done in a tasteful and necessary way....and ... read more it was beautiful, and funny, and sentimental, and even disgusting at times.
I simply love the the music. I have been obsessed with everything about this show--and haven't felt that way since the origianl Les Mis.
A show like this is why I am addicted to theater and it has been my passion since grade school. It has meaning and truly touched my soul.
Can't wait to see it again.

Talented Cast Stuck in a Mediocre Musical Review by: kapnkool, Jan 19, 2007 |
| I am a writer and musician, and have seen a ton of broadway plays. My wife and I are not prudish by any stretch. With that disclaimer out of the way, we were one of the few who thought that this musical was a disaster. The cast is fantastic, and sing their hearts out, but they are stuck in a vehicle that is soulless. I never believed in the love between the two main characters, and the situations thrust upon the protaganists was so painfully ... read more cliched, it bordered on self parody. I feel bad for these castmembers because they are incredibly talented. But the musical as a whole is a mess and an insult in comparison to RENT, which at least established an emotional tie between their characters and the audience. All the sexual situations, the curse laden songs- seemed inserted to shock and titilate, as opposed to expressing real teen angst. I often felt like I was watching a spanish soap opera on Telemundo. Why all these national critics are fawning over this musical is a bigger mystery to me then the Pyramids or Stonehenge. |

Review by: Justinlclr, Jan 1, 2007 |
| This haunting tale of young love and teenage angst was both deeply moving and very effective. The songs are remarkable in that they relate the 19th century repression to contemporary audiences. This is show, along with Grey Gardens, gives me hope for the future of musical theatre after years of shameful Disney shows and uninspired revivals. |

Big Disappointment Review by: GreyGardensFan, Dec 22, 2006 |
| Expecting a lot from all the hype and found this show to be cliche'd to the extreme, boring, anachronistic, and the music was not very theatrical. Anyway, whadya expect when you go see some horny adolescents trying to belt out songs. |

I saw ot 3 times! Review by: Lovedit, Oct 4, 2006 |
Every so often there is a show I go to see again. Much less often, there is a production I can see endlessly. This is one of those shows. All involving. I hope it transfers well with all the warmth of the Atlantic production.
When is the CD coming out? |

BROADWAY BOUND Review by: InTownfromOutofTown, Jul 21, 2006 |
| As announced today, this fantastic show is well-deservedly Broadway bound!!! The juxtaposition of 19th century story and aesthetic exploring teenage angst expressed through 21st century music and choreography was brilliant and provacative. The actors commit with rare talent and passion and the music soars. Have not been this moved and energized by theater since "Caroline or Change". |

Awakening Review by: folkyboy, Jul 17, 2006 |
I recently saw a production of this show and was floored by how brilliant it was done. The actors deliver the story with such charisma and ambition that you almost feel their angst and lust in each line.
And even though one knows the work on which it was based, you can't help but feel like you're seeing the show for the first time. Definitely a brilliant piece of artwork that EVERYONE must go see.
I can't wait for the ... read more cast recording! |

Review by: gordortho, Jul 4, 2006 |
| Better than I expected. The music, the songs , the actors, the lighting, the story, the whole shibang. This is what musicals are supposed to be about. The freshest, most exciting new show I've seen in a long time, in this time of rehashed and pop music reviews, this is a breath of fresh air. This show should be on Broadway. |

Don't miss Spring Awakening! Review by: artfortheheart, Jun 5, 2006 |
| Better than most Broadway shows, Spring Awakening is a "must see" experience. The young, very talented cast is a breath of fresh air, bringing energy and passion to the wonderful music. The subject is the joy and trauma of adolescence in repressive times. Though the play is a hundred years old, sadly too little has changed- the issues are still with us. The terrific score brings an often humorous, insightful contemporary perspective to the ... read more age-old angst. The innovative Bill T. Jones' choreography enhances the intimate but spare staging. We'd love to see this show's run extended in a Broadway venue, and hope a music CD is made available. Spring Awakening is not just for a youth audience- anyone open to great acting, singing, and memorable music will enjoy this show! |
