Fabulous performance, even without Matthew Morrison or Kelli O'Hara! Review by: krispyc333, Apr 18, 2009 |
| This was truly a tremendous show. I absolutely adored every bit of it, down to the last chorusmember. The orchestra was terrific; I don't think I've ever seen a better one on Broadway. I was a tad disappointed that I didn't get to see Matthew Morrison or Kelli O'Hara, but the new actors were just as wonderful. Paulo Szot was breath-taking. I was just stunned at his charming voice, and was blown away by his performance of Emile DeBecque. He ... read more completely deserved the Best Actor award. Loretta Ables Sayre was a flawless Bloody Mary, I couldn't have hoped for a better one. Andrew Samonsky potrayed a shady and mysterious but effective version of Lt. Cable, and sang an amazing Younger Than Springtime. I adored Laura Osnes as Nellie, shew was fantastic in I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair and A Wonderful Guy. This an amazing show, do not miss it. |

An Enchanting Evening with a Classical Show!! Review by: Broadway Junkie, Mar 23, 2009 |
| The orchestra was tremendous! I loved the show! The actors took me away and made me feel like I was really a part of the story. The acting was wonderful and the supporting cast was just as great as the leads. I LOVED the set and the use of the set. This is a classic show and should be seen by everyone. |

2nd time: updated review Review by: DMM and AKM, Mar 11, 2009 |
My teen and I saw SP for the 2nd time as of today. We originally saw SP when it first opened with the original cast. I absolutely love this show and did as a kid watching the film version with Mitzi Gaynor. South Pacific at Lincoln Center is still amazing but with this newer cast, has lost some of its' spark and magic to me. We couldn't believe Laura Osnes has replaced Kelli O'Hara; to us she's still playing Sandy from Grease with a ... read more southern accent and does not have the stage presence or voice/acting chops that Kelli commanded. Andrew Samonsky is just ok at Lt Cable but again, didn't have the sex appeal or voice of Matthew Morrison. The understudy for Emile de Becque performed today and he was excellent with a marvelous baritone. Danny and Loretta are still terrific and a joy to watch. All in all, SP is one of the best productions for musical theater on Broadway today; it's still the quintessential classic and a great production. The orchestra is fantastic and a joy to watch and listen to. The Vivian Beaumont is an amazing theater space and every seat has a clear site of stage. |

Full ENTHUSIASTIC orchestra makes this classic magical. Review by: MickeyBoy7, Feb 12, 2009 |
This is the one show you can enjoy with the whole family that's not based on a cartoon or Disney character. Start your kids Broadway experiences with a truly remarkable evening in the theater that they will never forget. With true classic musical numbers by Rogers & Hammerstein performed in front of a 30 piece enthusiastic orchestra. And let me tell you that it's a beautiful theater without a bad seat in the house. The stage seems to ... read more come right into the audience and you feel like you can reach out and touch these great performers. |

Go now! Review by: NY-R-4-Life, Jan 30, 2009 |
| Many of us have every now and then wished to be witness to a moment in history. To be present at Lincoln's Gettysburgh Address or to have been in the audience at the Ed Sullivan Show when the Beatles first appeared. Well, you have as real a chance as you'll ever get to living such a moment if you get a ticket...any ticket...and see one of the pinnicles of American musical theater, South Pacific. With its faithfulness to the original ... read more orchestrations, authentic costumes and minimal sets that place the music front and center, you feel it's 1949 when the theather world was just widening its eyes to Rogers & Hammerstein. Go now. Unmissible and unforgettable. |

A Great Revival Review by: NedRacine, Jan 3, 2009 |
I have to admit I've never liked the movie, never enjoying it enough to finish watching it. So I attended this musical only because of the great reviews. My impression is that the musical is a little dated, but a spectacular job has been done to make it appeal to a modern audience. The set is authentic and I love how the costumes, especially the bathing suits of the girls were both cute while still clearly from the 40's. "There is nothing ... read more like a dame" is a "bawdy" song that is such a representative WWII tribute to men's desires for beautiful girls. What woman today would sing "I'm gonna wash that man right outa my hair"? Yet these songs and others are an enjoyable nostalgic trip to the emotions, feelings, and culture of the 1940's. One aspect that lost some of its punch is the treatment of latent racial bias. When Nellie says "but she was colored" referring to Emille's former wife, my reaction(and I think most others) was to shrug my shoulders and say "Soooo?" But this was strong stuff in 1950. All the singers were great, but I really loved Paulo Szot's deep baritone voice. All in all, this musical is a must-see. |

An awesome and magical night Review by: SAT, Nov 3, 2008 |
| It was awesome! It was a magical experience. I was enthralled the entire evening. I wished it would never end. By the end of the show I had tears in my eyes. As I was leaving the theater I heard people who were from abroad raving that this is what musical theater really should be. The leads were just spectacular. |

AMAZING - a truly enchanted evening! Review by: ephrat, Oct 15, 2008 |
South Pacific was amazing! A truly "enchanted evening"! I loved every moment of it - the actors were excellent, every single one. The characters were so genuinely played that it felt like the South Pacific plot was enraveling before the audience's eyes. The songs were performed beautifully, and the story was very touching. For those romantics out there, this is a must-see! I can't wait to see it again! |

AMAZING...they don't make 'em like this anymore! Review by: CT29, Oct 4, 2008 |
Simply put, one of the best musical performances I've ever seen, and I have seen almost all out there right now! I remember performing this musical back in high school, and this revival tonight had me hooked from beginning to end. If you have any doubt I encourage you to go near the theatre as a performance lets out and just listen to the people RAVE about is as they leave. I heard one woman say walking out "you know I knew all the songs ... read more but I had no idea they were from South Pacific!". That's so telling...Rodgers & Hammerstein's magic comes to life in this revival that I absolutely will remember for a VERY long time. A few things you should know: - The show is sold out or nearly sold out for months...however I went today (a saturday) and used the cancelation line 2 hrs before the show. I went 2 hours before the 2pm matinee and was about to get a ticket..when I heard Kelli O'Hara was off. I then came back for the evening show and unfortunately heard again an understudy would be used (Laura Marie Duncan)...however I got 9th row orchestra center, for face value, and went for it. I do NOT regret it one bit. - The theatre is small but amazing and different from traditional broadway theatres. I really believe almost every seat both in orchestra and in loge was a GREAT seat, the stage is never obstructed. - Cast was amazing....but equalled by the production quality. 30 piece orchestra (absolutely phenomenal), amazing costumes, lighting, sets...giving this all of what it needs to share the honor of being run in the Lincoln Center Theatre. - Don't be dismayed if you feel the audience skews older (i heard a few people in line complain about this)...I am 34, and the evening performance had a number of folks my age and younger...and this musical has such a broad appeal to all ages...even the children in the audience LOVED it. I had read these reviews last night and was happily surprised: 1) the cancelation line worked and I got amazing seats that I can't imagine I would have been able to secure otherwsie and 2) when they say RUN DON'T WALK to this show... and one reviewer "even if you are in town for one night...see this show"....THEY ARE EXACTLY RIGHT. Tho show is already sold out into MARCH 2009 with only a few seats open around Christmas day, but that cancelation line works! Get there early, be patient and respectful, and enjoy! P.S. word to the wise...don't drink a lot before/during the show....the restrooms (both men's and women's) had HUGE HUGE HUGE lines during intermission and I don't think everyone got to go. The first Act is 1 hour 40 minutes...so a lot of people needed to use them. LCT should have opened another set of restrooms!! PLEASE SEE THIS SHOW I PROMISE YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! TRULY ONE OF THE GREATEST BROADWAY MOMENTS FOF MY LIFE! You will leave uplifted, smiling, and wanting to tell everyone you know! THANK YOU SOUTH PACIFIC! |

Astonishing perfomances in a perfect musical Review by: DWC, Sep 12, 2008 |
South Pacific is an absolute must see show. No one today writes more beautiful melodies than Richard Rodgers nor more apt lyrics than Oscar Hammerstein. Kelli O'Hara is astonishing in her ability to transform Nellie from a naive and confused individual to a confident young woman who is no longer burdened by her former prejudices. And what an amazing voice she has. Paolo Szot is perfect as Emile; his performance is so very ... read more moving and his voice is astounding. Matthew Morrison is terrific as Lt. Cable. The entire cast is wonderful. The orchestra, sets, lighting, etc, add tremendously to the impact that this show has on the audience. Go see it!! |

Kids are the best reviewers Review by: Marianne, Aug 25, 2008 |
| I escort a group of 11 year old girls in a theater club to Broadway plays every other month. They have seen South Pacific, Lion King, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, The Little Mermaid, The Fantasticks, and Mary Poppins. Yesterday, I asked them their favorites. This was their answer: They liked South Pacific best, then The Fantasticks, then Lion King. Even kids can pick 'em right! |

BEST SHOW YOU WILL EVER SEE !! Review by: smu, Aug 23, 2008 |
| I have seen the new production of South Pacific at Lincoln Center three times already and may go again. It is that good !! My usual choice of music is hard rock/heavy metal but I also love Broadway. Go figure. Can't understand the last reviewer's negative comments. It boggles the mind. This production is amazing. Terrific cast, great music, great orchestra & not a bad seat in the house. Go see it, you will love it. |
