| I am fifteen years old and saw this musical with my mother, who is fifty six. She grew up with the soundtrack from this musical and was not at all disappointed by this revival - nor was I! I may be old-fashioned, but I absolutely adored this play. I saw the film once when I was very young, and had several flashbacks during the show when certain songs came on. People are saying that the story is outdated and that it should be spiced up, as most ... read more revivals do - I found that I loved how they kept the story true. The actors were amazing. Absolutely amazing. Their voices were beautiful; this truly was an enchanted production. I realize that this coming from a female teenager who also loved both "Wicked" and "The Lion King" probably won't be true for other teens, but if you love a good ol' chestnut of a play, do come to "South Pacific" and you will not be disappointed. If you are a tourist coming to NYC with kids and are more interested in being 'dazzled', you'd better check out the page for "Wicked" because that's probably more your style. |

Try To See Before It Closes Review by: , Jul 30, 2010 |
This was an excellent, flawless production of classic musical theater. It's not modern, but was clearly ahead of its time. Although nearly 3 hours, they flew by faster than some 90 minute shows I've seen. It is really worth trying to catch in the last 3 weeks of its run. |

Music Carries The Day Review by: marshall, Jun 18, 2010 |
First, I have to say that I'm not sure why the show got such rapturous across-the-board reviews when it opened. Maybe it was because this was the first revival. It was a fine production, but nothing I would rave about. That being said, the music is the reason to see this show. Songs like "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" were far ahead of their time, and I would assume definitely controversial. This show originally opened up only ... read more four years after the war ended, so I'm sure feelings were still running high. Overall, I enjoyed the production and the show, but the music is what I will remember most. I was familiar with all of the songs, but it was a treat seeing them sung within the context for which they were written.

first play i ever walk out of Review by: , Mar 15, 2010 |
| i've seen roughly 25 plays, and this is the first one i left at intermission. Better for an older crowd; more of a "classic". i found it boring and outdated. i do like other "classic" plays, but just not this one. The actors were fabulous; just tried story line. |

Some memorable parts, but overall was boring Review by: Musical Lover, Mar 1, 2010 |
| There were 2 or 3 scenes that were memorable, but the rest was sooo boring. This show is NOTHING like Wicked, Lion King, Jersey Boys, In the Heights--is not exciting. Just a long story. I think older members like it because it reminds them of WWII. don't watch |

An Enchanted Evening Review by: Spartan75, Feb 27, 2010 |
| South Pacific was exactly what you might expect in a classic Broadway musical. The talent of the cast was incredible. What voices! The presence of a large orchestra made the experience all the more special. The show was long, but very meaningful, as my father served in the Marine Corps in the south Pacific during WWII. The stage scenery added so much to the performance. I understand that this revival of South Pacific will ... read more be leaving Broadway in August of this year. Would recommend this classic piece of broadway! Review by: David, Feb 17, 2010 |
I saw the show yesterday evening with some friends and we all very much enjoyed the production. David Pittsinger(Emille de Becque) has an excellent voice and very well portrayed his character. Laura Osnes (Nellie Forbush) did a good job with her character as well. However, I felt her voice which is very nice, lacked the power to fill the large auditorium. I was not impressed buy Andrew Samonsky (Lt. Cable)who I ... read more felt was the weakest performer of the cast both for acting and voice. My favorite was Loretta Ables Sayre (Bloody Mary). She absolutely nailed it in all respects. Without question, the wonderful Rodgers & Hammerstein score being played by an orchestra completes the whole broadway musical experience. I would definately recommend seeing this show. |

Classic show worth seeing Review by: JW, Feb 5, 2010 |
Can't help but reiterate what reviewers below have stated--one of the greatest musical scores in theatrical history. Virtually all of the songs have become standards, recorded by singers from A to Z. The score is giving lush treatment by a fine cast, ably abetted by a 30-piece orchestra (When was the last time a show featured an orchestra of that magnitude?) I have mixed feelings about the plot. Having seen the movie, I could never fully ... read more accept the show's war-time setting (it always seemed that the characters were on some holiday excursion rather than being in the midst of war). However, "South Pacific" was one of the first musicals to deal with the issue of bigotry, and for that it deserves accolades, this, despite the fact that the bitter-sweet ending appears to be moralistic. All in all, this is a show worth seeing, particularly since it's the show's first Broadway revival in some 50 years. Who knows, another 50 years may go by before it appears again. |

Modern Opera Review by: DoctorJoeE, Sep 6, 2009 |
I'm surprised to see so few reviews of this show, which I suppose means it is mostly being seen by tourists. And that's okay -- but this is one production where New Yorkers should set aside their legendary snobbishness. It's a classic show, prices are finally coming down into less extortionate ranges due discount tickets, and (I'll bet this hasn't happened to you in a LONG time), you'll leave humming the tunes! Yes, it's dated -- just ... read more like every opera you've ever seen. You have to remember, Rodgers & Hammerstein is modern opera: A hundred years from now, their work (and possibly Sondheim's) will be the only contemporary musical theatre remembered. (No, I'm not forgetting Andrew Lloyd Webber or Leonard Bernstein.) And it's longer than most contemporary musicals, and the plot drags like crazy, like most musicals of that era. But you're not there for the plot, you're there for the wonderful music, and nostalgia for an era long gone. Just like opera. So go see it -- it's wonderful stuff. And while you're there, go next door and pick up some tickets for the Met or the NYC Opera before they sell out.

Extraordinary Classic Broadway Production Review by: Carol, Aug 16, 2009 |
This was the first Broadway I ever saw nearly six decades ago, and I fell in love with theater because of Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza. In this production Laura Osnes as Nellie Forbush and Paulo Szot as Emile de Becque were outstanding. This show represents the Golden Age of the Broadway musical, and no team does it better than Rogers and Hammerstein. The songs are classic show tunes that have stood the test of time. This indeed is a ... read more period piece set in World War II from stories written by James Michener, who experienced the battles and setting firsthand. Go as fast as you can! Do not miss this wonderful production by the Lincoln Center Theater. It deserved all the Tonys it won. |

Fantastic must-see Show Review by: jeannie, Aug 5, 2009 |
My daughter and I saw the matinee on August 1st. Initially I was very disappointed that an understudy was playing the part of Emile de Beque. However, William Michaels was just brilliant. Everyone in the cast was wonderful - Billis, Bloody Mary, sexy Joe Cable - the scenery was beautifully put together. Words cannot describe listening to the orchestra - blissful. I must see it again! Great actors and voices carry the show Review by: FrisbieCat, Jul 14, 2009 |
My wife and I saw this show last weekend and really enjoyed it. The two leads steal the show. Kelli has great range, emotion, and clarity as Nellie, and Paulo makes a strong Broadway debut with an undeniably amazing voice. They are reason enough to see the show. I wasn't as thrilled with a couple other cast choices, including the actor who played the Lieutenant, but there were no major weaknesses. The musical score has a number of ... read more classic songs and the cast projects well. As for the plot, well, it is okay. I find it a tad odd that arguably the main dramatic arc involves Nellie out of nowhere having racist feelings towards Emile's kids, and then suddenly deciding she doesn't have racist feelings for them (with not much to explain why she had the original feelings and then the change of heart). But, I guess you don't go to South Pacific for a brilliant, intricate plot--you go for great music and strong acting with interesting sets on an exotic island. In all of those ways, this show delivers. |
