Sondheim career history and his music Review by: brooklyn lady, May 16, 2010 |
| Saw Sondheim on Sondheim on Saturday, May 15. Enjoyed the show. It was interesting to hear Sondheim himself on film talking about his life and creative process. Sorry there was not more of Miss Cook singing. When she did sing solo it was perfect. Vanessa Williams is very attrative and sings and performs well. Only one song from West Side Story was performed which I found disappointing but after lisening to Mr. ... read more Sondheim speak about his career I understand that the songs from West Side Story are not what he wants for his music. The haunting Send in the Clowns was song by Miss Cook and it was a wow. Listening to Mr. Sondheim speak about his life and career was so enjoyable. I kept on waiting for him to be back up on the sceens telling us the background of the songs. The staging was excellent - just a perfect picture and I thought a great use of technology. |

Review by: Ricky's Redhead, May 3, 2010 |
| This is one fantastic show! The insight this multi-media show gives into what was behind Sondeheim's process when creating his masterpieces is enthralling. The cast was fantastic. Vanessa Williams and Tom Wopat were fantastic. Leslie Kritzer, Erin Mackey and Norm Lewis were fantastic! My only complaint is tha the show didn't feature more of Euan Morton! The man is an amazing talent. The "deleted" songs were fantastic to hear. This is a ... read more definite must-see for any Sondheim fan! |

Go if you like Sondheim Review by: Clarice, Apr 18, 2010 |
| If you are familiar with Sondheim, then you will like this show. It was more like a concert with video of Sondheim's life. The vocalist were all great and the set design was interesting. They sang a few songs that were cut from shows. I think they could have shortened a few of the numbers because it really killed the momentum of the show in the middle. |

Sondheim: Welcome to my World aka Sondheim 101 Review by: rskblueyes, Apr 3, 2010 |
For those unfamilar with Stephen Sondheim or dont appreciate his style, you probally wont appreciate this show. For those fans and Sondheim admirers please read on.... This show was beyond my expectations. I have seen many Sondheim revues both on and off Broadway. This one was like no other,,, I probally shouldnt even call it a revue, it was more like a documentry of sorts with some fantastic live performances. Seeing this show,... read more, you now know how Sondheim mind ticks. All the performers were great especially Norm Lewis, Barbara Cook, and Vanessa Williams. The set, lighting and effects were wonderfull. What made this show real special was the numbers that were cut or evolved during preview and what ended as the final result. The musicals number were mostly excellent, some with new interpreations and styles, a few didnt work out of context of the shows they were from. It was great that Sondheim participated with the production and provided in depth interviews...The archival footage was facinating. I have always been a Sondheim fan but coming out of this show I have even a deeper appreciation for his work. |

Sondheim- totally entertaining and engaging Review by: Pippin Grows Up, Apr 3, 2010 |
| My wife, myself and my 13 year old son just saw the show and we were hopeful it would be good but far exceeded our expectations. The set might have been the biggest star, as it took what could have been flat Sondheim interviews, and made Sondheim absolutely come alive on stage. The performers are all excellent, and the show was surprisingly funny and enjoyable. There were a few slow moments in Act 2, which could use a bit of work, but overall it ... read more was excellent, and my 13 year old was shocked at how much he liked it, as he came along with us only under protest. We are only modrate Sondheim fans, but gained new appreciation for shows like Merrily We Roll Along, which I knew nothing about previously. I would highly reccommend this for any real lover of the musical theatre. |

wasted potential Review by: Broadway Baxter, Apr 1, 2010 |
I was really looking forward to this show. Great material, famous performers, new format, but in the end, it was just an immense disappointment. Reviews as a rule are difficult given the immense ground they attempt to cover and contextualize, but this review is appallingly bad. That is a particular shame when you consider the material they could have used. Imagine these items which are all part of the show: a Mike Douglas interview,... read more, insipid youtube clips and a cast who seems destined to perform theater greats with the aplomb and heart of the Lawrence Welk singers. Sondheim songs must be acted as well as sung, and in this retrospective, that aspect is almost utterly forgotten. On a bright note, Barbara Cook is great, but even she sounds tired. The much-touted multimedia equipment set up is impressive, but it fails to create the intimacy it needs and ends up feeling like you are a weekend guest, sitting uncomfortably, in the living room of a legend. My guest pass expired at the end of the first act when Mr. Sondheim said he needed a drink. At that point so did I. But in my own living room. I must say, however, that the tourists loved it. |

A Special Show for Sondheim Lovers Review by: Sondheim Lover, Mar 23, 2010 |
| One of the most beautiful shows that I have seen in quite a while. Though I am hard pressed to call this a "broadway show". The topic is intensely interesting and complex. The strong cast of voices are outstanding. One would certainly need to be a Sondheim lover with a keen interest in what makes this artist tick. The footage of Sondheim is very informative and entertaining. The audience reactions said so much. I was ... read more at a weekend performance. The wild applause would cease immediately when footage of SS began. I have heard people react that many of the selections are from those cut from shows or lesser known pieces. It is important to recall they were selected to showcase his lyrics, music and themes. The show is almost three hours, but we never felt the time go by so quickly. This was an outstanding evening focused on outstanding artists. The show is definitely not for someone that is new to Broadway or is an infrequent visitor to the musical theatre. |
