Shining City Shines in My Book Review by: Sparksy, Jul 17, 2006 |
What I really loved about this play was the mood swings it created with the audience....you go from laughing hysterically at something Oliver Platt's character says to feeling sad for both his situation and the personal crisis of his therapist (Brian O'Byrne). The acting is outstanding by all 4 characters. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Martha Plimpton's performance, she deserved more stage time. Overall, it has what it takes to keep a ... read more true theatre-loving audience enthralled...the ending scared me a little! If you consider yourself a play-buff like me, go and see it! |

Good, not great for me. Review by: , Jul 8, 2006 |
I was expecting a lot, I thought this play was ok, not outstanding. The performances are good, that is true, but I am a little tired of the homosexual priest angle. I figured this out on my own just from the interaction with his fiancee. Old news.
I did like the ending, however, and there were parts that all can relate to in regards to the human condition. Would I recommend it, yes, but did not think it was great. |

What outstanding theater is all about. Review by: Noodles, Jun 18, 2006 |
| This is what outstanding theater is all about, and hard to find these days. A devestating script, with impact, surprise, humor, depth. Performances that electrify the Broadway season. I find it hard to name any of the four, as they are all excellent, but I'll go ahead anyway and say Brian O'Byrne and Oliver Platt control the scenes with a firm hand. And they are a pleasure to watch. If you want 90 minutes of great theater - no ... read more intermission - and don't mind some pretty harsh language scattered throughout, this is one to catch, especially while this cast is there. This makes me long for the good old days when Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams, John Osborne, and others in that class were still writing. |

The emperor has no clothes Review by: MJ, Jun 11, 2006 |
| This was one of the great disappointments of the season. I found the writing mediocre - and as a result the performances were extremely cliched and uninteresting. I like Oliver Platt, but perhaps he's only good in small doses. I found that there was only an overblown performance with no subtlety and nuance and absolutely no relationship with the past he was talking about. The rest of the cast was serviceable, but nothing special - and the "pay ... read more off" seemed extremely gratuitous. |

More great performances on Broadway Review by: DMS, Jun 5, 2006 |
| Great acting, especially by Oliver Platt. Brian O'Byrne and Martha Plimpton offer their usual stellar performances. Well written play. If I had written this, I would have re-written one scene as I did not think it added to the play. But it did make me jump out of my seat. |

Go see this play! Review by: fegefa, May 9, 2006 |
| Loved the surprise ending to this refreshing addition to Broadway this season. O'Byrne has a tough job anchoring the play whilst onstage the entire time. Oliver Platt is fun to watch (although his accent takes some ajusting to) but a great performance. The writing is terrific and doesn't disappoint. Martha Plimpton is AMAZING in this role! I wish her character was brought back for at least one additional scene. Overall a great experience. Go see ... read more it! |

Shining City Glows! Review by: ladydi, May 4, 2006 |
I've enjoyed Conor McPherson's work before - did anyone see The Weir a few years ago? So I had high hopes for Shining City and wasn't disappointed. The story is a familiar one - a man seeks therapy to get over the sudden death of his wife. Their marraige was a bit troubled and his emotions are all over the place. What he doesn't know is that his therapist is dealing with his own demons and not always successfully.
The writing here ... read more is excellent and the cast is wonderful. I've seen Brian O'Byrne many times and he's superb as the conflicted therapist. Martha Plimpton is also terrific.
My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it. A week later and we're still talking about it.
