Funny and Deep One Man Show Review by: annaking, Jul 8, 2011 |
This is a one man show that is funny as is deep. This is an exploration of the sex tourism industry. It doesn’t take sides, but it shows the way that these characters are forced to survive, with their dreams and aspirations. The play also explores homosexuality and race awareness. It was interested for me to see Latinos presented not as a race, but as Americans or people from other countries that have race problems experience racism amongst them.... read more. There was a list of Spanish language words in the program that helped understanding the play, but it was not essential. Most of the Spanish words are clear in the context. The best part of Sex on the Beach is the performance. Roy Arias was believable and touching in all three characters. He made the audience feel for these characters and understand them as human beings going past the stereotype of the transvestite, the hustler or even the Latino. I highly recommend this show both for the entertainment and for the reality behind the laugh.

Only Sexy When Sung Review by: ponderingprudency, Jul 7, 2011 |
Not worth the price it's selling for. Roy Arias, in the show he has written, produced and performing in, is a distracted performer playing three different roles at once with too much story to handle. Each character is touching and beautiful, but not as fleshed out or organized as audiences were wont to understand. It is difficult for those who are not of Hispanic/Latin origin to fully understand the humor of the piece. The singer,... read more, Natalia Peguero, gives a stunning performance of two songs in Spanish that are impressive and enticing. The songs do not seem to have any relevance to the show as a whole, but perhaps that is just the language barrier. There is no fluidity to the entire piece and the stories get jumbled around the musical performances, making the extended monologues dim behind the light of the beautiful music. The production as a whole has fair lighting, eclectic set, bright and colorful costuming, and decent sound, in a space that is less than forgiving. The production as a whole is mediocre, amateur theater, with few quality points, besides the singing. |

Informative and touching! Review by: Angie, Jun 17, 2011 |
This visit through the sex tourist industry is exciting and informative. It was very interesting to see what people have to do to survive in the Spanish Caribbean. The first character started by what appear to be a comedy for fun sake and then you see her heart and is heart breaking as the Puerto Rican transvestite who is trying to save her gay "daughter" from the life her fate, on the other hand, the homophobic hustler was a contradictions in ... read more term, but you see how much necesity plays a part in his and all the characterss decisions to sell their bodies. Perhaps the most touching is the Cuban escort, who is a dentist by profession and has to turn tricks to make a living due to the situation in her country. There was a singer between the characters, that I thought was not necessary, I would have liked to see the actor changing, but her voice was good and she was entertaining. |

A Limp "Sex on the Beach"! Review by: FATU, May 20, 2011 |
| The much acclaimed, former Artistic Director of the Classical Theatre of Harlem, Alfred Preisser directs the sluggish and unfocused Off-Broadway premier of "Sex on the Beach". Roy Arias turns in uneven performances as he portrays three Latino sex workers--hustler, prostitute and an escort-- on three different Caribbean islands, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rican. Originally performed in Spanish for Latin audiences, this version ... read more is marred by a Spanish accented English which is so strong, the dialogue is often incomprehensible. But one stand-out performer is the (uncredited) singer who wows the audience with both her voice and seductive manner. She performs between Arias' set pieces. |
