Actors give a Seminar....All those wishing to Attend....Stop Here ! Review by: Diract 66, Mar 16, 2012 |
| After Jerry O'Connell finished his opening speech, I knew that I was going to like this play and still have some reservations about the premise. Alan Rickman, much more brilliant than I, needs to read only one sentence to make his learned decisions. That is the problem with this Seminar, except that later in the show these snap decisions make Rickman's long thoughful reading silence much more dramatic and meaningful. A lot of fast talking with ... read more big words and bigger thoughts so keep your listening ears on. The actors don't even stop for the audience laughing, which is quite frequently, so some words are missed. Creative scene changes bring the actors on in darkness across the stage to set up the next scene so you don't feel the pauses before the lights come up. Not needed T & A in this play, once at the start and once at the end. Hamish Linkalter is excellent in his banter with Rickman and the others. Watch him pick a winner from his mouth. A great stage presence, as are all the rest of the actors in this play, Lily Rabe and Hettienne Park. If you have been to school you have had a teacher like Rickman who insists on teaching by telling you the truth, but we and the actors on stage"can't handle the truth." This play may be more an Acting Seminar than a literature seminar but stick with it for just when you think the play is over after Alan Rickman's long monologue; "This class is over.".. it isn't. Another fifteen minutes, another expansive set, and it's a wrap! O'Connell facial looks, Park's exuburance, Rabe's great eating scene, Linklater's lanky laid back homey appeal, and Rickman's insight and wisecracks, all make this an enjoyable evening. They pay 5000 each to be abused and insulted by Rickman, you should pay discount and happily watch the fun.....and drama. |

| Having read the critics' rave reviews of this show in addition to my admiration for the film work of Richman, I can't describe my disappointment after attending the theater last night. I left thinking there must be something wrong with me since I did not see the "genius" the critics were talking about. Instead, what I witnessed was a show that seemed full of itself and dull. This is above average in terms of dialogue. The delivery is VERY fast-paced and I missed a few of the jokes. But it is hilarious,but somewhat on the dark humour side. Actually it's a very negative (I don't have a problem with that). Could it be taken as degrading to women,who in this drama, use sex to get positive reviews of their literary work??
Also when you analyse after leaving the theatre, Alan Rickman's character seems to float ... read more between which literary genre - literature or journalism (Somalia)??
Nevertheless I did enjoy. Also I did not pay full price for this. |

| I was disappointed. Seeing Alan Rickman's name on the casting list sold me the ticket. I honestly wouldn't have gone if he wasn't there. The play itself was very amateur; it lacked any depth. The acting was very good as well as the stage design. I constantly found my attention wandering away from the plot and towards the set; it was far more interesting. | An insightful and provocative comedy/drama about the writing profession. How much of what we read is true, and what does it take to become a top-selling author. All performances are excellent with special mention to Alan Rickman, Lily Rabe and Hamish Linklater. Good direction at a fast-pace. Sets, lighting and costumes are all apt and exemplary. Highly recommended to serious theatregoers and writers and would be writers. |

While there are some obvious issues with the script, it does what it sets out to do. On the way out, the old guy in front of me asked his wife how he was supposed to enjoy the show with people laughing in his ears the whole time.
It was not the Alan Rickman show, which was pleasant even though that's what sold me the ticket. He and the script left plenty of stage for everyone else.
It is a raunchy sellout with its literal t&a and ... read more naughty words, but that's appropriate in a comedy about writing as a business proposition. It is sloppy in places. It takes shortcuts to squeeze itself into one act, and that's a shame. But I left with a big smile on my face and I'd love to read the final draft. |

For those who actually bother to read, love books, love authors and writing, and know theater, for the non 'tweet' crowd, the non 'ebook' crowd- this is a treat. All 5 actors are great with standout work by Hamish Linklater and Rickman and a surprising turn by Jerry O'Connell.
Its a shame shows are becoming 90 minutes due to the shortened attention span of audiences, but it seems to be the wave of the future. Set and lights are ... read more fabulous and music is a tad too loud. Trust me- SEE IT. |

In all fairness, I was drawn to this show because of Alan Rickman, an incredibly talented actor in my opinion, and wouldn't have seen it otherwise. What could be better than seeing him live again, right?! Ehh, a LOT of things could have been better.
This play needs a lot of editing and configuration before the opening night. I'm a college student and even for me the amount of swearing was a tad distracting. Here and there it helps ... read more make a point, but every other word made it lose the strong feeling. The story line is something that has been done time and time again- nothing really new- so don't be surprised if you find it a little lack luster and overdone. There ARE some wonderfully humorous parts...IF you can actually hear them. A lot of the time, the actors were upstaging themselves, mumbling, OR continuing to talk OVER laughter from the audience, so you could miss a lot of the dialog. The music and lighting effects used to indicate scene changes were pretty interesting and helped create a nice transition. As said before, Alan was the main factor in this decision, and to be honest, it probably wouldn't last long after opening if he wasn't the show's big appeal (aside from Jerry O'Connell). That being said, even HE looked a little bored on stage. If you're an Alan fan like me: A.) Wait until after opening night to see a show (hopefully someone will read this and make the changes to the performance) and B.) definitely get discount tickets.
In all, its slightly funny and has Alan Rickman. That's about it. |
