Limbo Has Never Been This Funny Review by: DoctorJoeE, Mar 16, 2011 |
First of all, if you plan to see this play -- and I heartily recommend that you do -- do NOT read the NY Times review before you go. The critic (not Brantley) gives away the ending, which is totally unprofessional, and inexcusable, and makes no sense, and he should be ashamed of himself. That said, by all means, go. It's a hilarious, tight little drama, superbly acted by five real pros. My only real complaint concerns the venue, which ... read more is too small -- smaller than my livingroom, and up two flights of stairs after somebody buzzes you in -- the way a speakeasy must have felt in the bad old days. A small stage is great for performance intimacy (we were in the first row, practically INSIDE the play), but a tiny audience feels self-conscious about laughing out loud, and this script deserves much more laughter than it gets. And these five desperate people -- a bartender, a drunk, a skank, a greaser, and a virgin (!) -- all 32 years old, and all in limbo -- make you laugh, and think, and discuss, and reflect, long after they've departed, which is so rare in original drama these days. If you saw Doubt, you know John Patrick Shanley is world class. This is not in the rarified class of Doubt, won't win him another Pulitzer -- but it's pretty darned good -- definitely worth an hour and 10 minutes of your valuable time. I hope it graduates to a bigger venue; if so, I'll see it again, to catch some of the riffs I missed the first time (they go by really fast), and to enjoy the response it will get from a larger audience. Not for kids -- lots of F-bombs, and the subject matter is not "kid" stuff anyway. |

Solid Performance Review by: Quest, Mar 9, 2011 |
| This was a good show! I really enjoyed the acting performances of the female lead characters. The script is very poetic and has a lot of meat to it. On the surface, the set design tells you it takes place in a bar... though after the play ended I realized that it might actually be some alternate dimension or "limbo" after death. If it were a movie, I'd watch it again. |
