Best Rent Cast Ever Review by: lisa, Jul 16, 2012 |
| This is about the 20th or more time I have seen Rent. First time off broadway. Let me say that the cast was the best cast I have ever seen. Anthony Fedorov was awesome. The feelings he portrayed as Roger really showed through. This is the first time I had seen someone cry doing a performance. Angel was fantastic but I have to say the whole cast was amazing. Just be prepared is is freezing in the theater. I found it interesting how they made the ... read more set work with a smaller stage. I have to go back again before it closes. This is one classic play that should not be closing it's doors. |

Excellent production of a Great American Show Review by: Gary Theatre Lover, Jul 4, 2012 |
I also saw Rent a few years into it's Broadway run and I must say that I enjoyed this production more. What I found is a really well done off-Broadway production. The set is very well done, the band is good (if occasionaly too loud to hear some of the lyrics) and the actors are mostly good, but a cut beow (as a whole) than a Broadway cast. Off Broadway is simply based ont he size of the Theatre (must be under 500 seats) and ... read more this theatre was built to have 499 seats (I asked). They do this to keep their costs down and make it easier to keep shows like this and Avenue Q (playing in the same complex of 5 off Broadway theatres) open longer than they could in a far more expensive Broadway theatre. So in summary, I really enjoyed it although it is better if you know the story and lyrics as some are hard to understand due to the sound of the band and miking of some of the actors (my eldest son was confused at times as he did not know anything about Rent before we walked in), but I really enjoyed this roduction and the smaller theatre is actually a big plus for this wonderful piece of truly American art! I highly recommend to Rent fans. |

No Day But Today Review by: MH75, Mar 12, 2012 |
RENT is my favourite musical, and has been since I first saw a local production at home in Brisbane Australia. I have seen a number of different productions of RENT over the years, from the local theatre group productions, to the previous Broadway production. I tend to be quite scathing about issues in productions of RENT, if it is not up to standard or they change something, I am not happy. The initimacy of the small theatre at New ... read more World Stages adds to RENT, it is a show that you need to feel apart of, and this theatre definately helps with that. Reading the cast bios, and seeing Justin Johnston listed as playing Roger, and thinking how? Afterall he was the final Broadway Angel. WOW, he caught me with One Song Glory, and took me on that RENT induced high, such a talented person performing the role beautifully Josh Grisetti at first seemed like someone pretending to be Mark, it was not until Tango Maureen that I was able to associate with him as being Mark, this and the fact that Mark did not have his customary scarf were my only criticism of the production RENT moves me, only once have I got through a production of RENT without a tear, on saturday afternoon, I had tears running down my face, Bramdon Victor Dixon's reprise of I'll Cover You was one of the powerful and emotional that I have ever experienced. |

even better than expected Review by: Broadway girl, Feb 16, 2012 |
| This production was a very pleasant surprise. I'd seen Rent before many years ago, and enjoyed the vocals and dancing more this time. The staging exceeded my expectations. It is a very high energy show with very good performances. The interpretation of Angel's character lacked some of the intense heart and soul, though was certainly entertaining. |

Simply Amazing Review by: BwayGuru1086, Jan 20, 2012 |
| Ive seen over 50 broadway shows over the last ten years, and NOTHING compares to this OFF BROADWAY revival of rent. The voices, acting and BAND are nothing short of spectacular. You laugh, you cry, you smile, and you hope. If you don't like this play, you don't have a heart. |

I'm sad because I want to see Rent again and it's 4 hrs away :( Review by: JenJen, Nov 27, 2011 |
Rent was an AMAZING show! It has a moving story, unbelievable music, and the cast was totally awesome :) I wasn't sure if I was going to like it after hearing so many different things about it, but by the end of the show, I loved it so much I had tears in my eyes. Now I'm sitting here, sulking, because I want to go back to New York and see Rent again and again. This show really moved me, and I think it will move other people, too. I think I have ... read more become an official Rent "fanatic" after seeing it just once. See Rent for a life-changing experience you will never forget. You will not regret it. No Day But Today <3 |

Unique NYC experience Review by: Zac, Nov 19, 2011 |
These guys are great singers and actors. The band and production were great too. We can't compare them with previous casts because they are unique, but again, they very similar to original cast. Some of actors are already stars and some will become stars for sure. I really enjoyed the show.

Podunk Community Players Present "Rent"! Review by: donna, Oct 18, 2011 |
| I agree with those who have said that this show was not "just a step off Broadway" caliber. With the exception of the set, staging and band (which, unlike other reviewers, I thought really worked)I felt like I was watching my local community theatre and not a $90/seat NYC production. The band (which was kick a--) was WAY too loud and drowned out the singers, rendering Larson't wonderful lyrics incomprehensible. Most of the leads had very ... read more weak voices (even with the mics and such a small theatre) and just screeched the songs (out of key). Mimi was beautiful but a TERRIBLE singer and Roger's face never had any expression--he barely opened his mouth to speak his lines. They were very, very pretty to look at but BORING beyond belief. Most egregious was the fact that during the show's climax--the BIG MOMENT--the cast froze in tableau for Mimi and Roger's big duet--and the actress playing Maureen and the actor playing Mark did NOT freeze but instead had an animated, flirty, out-of-character conversation DEAD SMACK CENTER STAGE squarely behind the 2 leads and completely pulled focus away from Roger and Mimi-- who were singing (badly--but still, come on!) This is the biggest theatre "no no" of them all and even high school students know not to do this much less 2 people who have been in multiple Broadway shows. Shame on them! But it is indicative of the novice nature of this production. What struck me the most, though, was how dated it seemed: Having lived in the East Village and working in the entertainment industry during the Age of AIDS,it was amazing to me that a show only 15 years old seemed so passe. Now that modern medical advances have allowed those living with HIV to do so for decades, it resonated very squarely with me (who lost friends and colleagues in the first decade of AIDS)and it made me very sad to think of those I have lost who "just missed" the drug cocktails that would have saved and or at least prolonged their lives. The show does a wonderful job of capturing that specific moment in time in what is now a bittersweet and nostalgic way--it's like the "Grease" of the AIDS generation--but that is attributable to time and the wonderful genius of Jonathan Larson NOT this production. |

Fabulous show, moving, energetic, talented actors. A must see! Review by: conscious42, Sep 26, 2011 |
| This show is possibly the best musical I've ever seen. The actors were fabulous, energetic and wonderfully talented. I found the show very moving and don't understand the naysayers at all. Anyone one seeing it who doesn't feel compassion has a problem. Seeing it is a must! |

Different show with a wonderful interpretation. Review by: Jon Cado, Sep 25, 2011 |
| Certainly don't believe all these other reviews. This revival has a lot more to offer than the original did. The actors went in a different direction and its worth seeing. Wherever you sit, you have a great view. I saw this on Row B in the Orchestra on House Right. I loved how the actors offered their own interpretation. Except for one, maybe two actors, everyone did a great job. Go see it! |

Disappointing Review by: LC, Jul 23, 2011 |
I have always found Rent to be too preachy. Although I obviously don't wish AIDS or poverty on anyone, these characters are victims only of their own promiscuity and drug use. They do not have the right to squat on others property and are far from heroic. That aside, I think the music is incredible and find some of the lyrics moving. I thoroughly enjoyed the show when I saw it with Rapp and Pascal. This cast is weak pretty much across ... read more the board. None belongs on a stage in NY with the exceptions of Nicholas Christopher and Corbin Reid. I saw it Sunday, July 17 and it was a mess...full of flubbed lyrics, out of tune singing, and uninspired acting. It is still in previews, but they have a long way to go to justify staying open. Go see some real entertainment like Anything Goes, Catch Me if You Can, War Horse, or Rents' neighbor... Avenue Q. It will be time and money much better spent.

What a Bummer :( Review by: TJJ, Jul 23, 2011 |
| Not Good :(this off-bway revival of the fab bway hit just does not hit the mark! It is a downer for all you RENTaholics! The cast is totally lost, charmless and poorly cast by actors w/ no emotional depth or vocal chops for this score. Directed w/ no focus, sloppily staged on a disastrous jungle gym set and the sound mixing is horrendous in this theater. Sorry, but avoid it and $ave your money for real rent! |

A life changing experience Review by: Justin, Jun 3, 2011 |
| I know it will sound cliche, but this show really did change my life. I was on the verge of giving up on everything that I love and this show helped bring me away from that. The music is outstanding, and the storyline is based off a beautiful opera and retold eloquently. One of the things I love is it obvious that Jonathan Larson poured his heart and soul into this show and its a shame he never got to finish it. I am so excited it is ... read more returning to the stage in NYC. Go see it!!!! |
