Only one act of three was worth it, but don't bother buying a ticket Review by: cab, Oct 12, 2011 |
| Elaine May's act was the only one worth seeing of the three; I laughed, I cried. Woody Allen's was the WORST- Borscht belt stuff, so overdone, and not funny ("my wife and I went to marriage counseling, and she had an affair with our marriage counseler"- that's the gist of it.) Coen's act was confusing, but had more depth than Woody Allen's. I think Woody wrote his in 10 minutes, or maybe recycled something he wrote 30 years ago. |

Do yourself a favor. Stay home and watch TV. Review by: jojo, Oct 11, 2011 |
Awful. We tried to entertain ourselves by watching the bored faces of the audience as they struggled to find something laughable. Some of the other reviewers said the third play (Woody Allen's) was the best. So, in all fairness, I must admit we didn't get that far. By intermission, we'd had enough and left. Maybe it got better after we departed.

Please go and give it a try Review by: tannerthebunny, Oct 6, 2011 |
| I saw the play yesterday afternoon and I'm glad I went as I found the play very worthwhile. Okay, I agree that Ethan coen's play wasn't very good, but the other two were very good. In fact, Woody Allen's play was worth the price of admission alone. Please go and see for yourself. |

Woody Allen as Woody Allen. Review by: Whitefish, Oct 6, 2011 |
There are three short plays. Coen's play was first; it was okay. Elaine May came next and it was more involving; not great but okay. Woody Allen's play followed the intermission. It was pure Woody Allen. The shrink, the rabbi the weird romance. Julie Kavner fit in quite well. It was one laugh after the other and made up for the earlier plays. If you like the old Woody Allen, it is a must see. It is well cast with seasoned ... read more actors and actresses who do a good job. |

Stay Home Review by: JazzyGirl, Oct 6, 2011 |
| Relatiely Speaking, don't waste your time, or money, on these three plays...Didnt get the first play at all and I found the arguing couple to be grating and not humorous. The second play, although well acted, by Marlo Thomas, was tragic. It was hard to laugh at a character so self absorbed and lacking in judgement or dealing with life in any manner. The third play was also a dissapointment. i adore Woody Allen and love his zaniness but he ... read more fell way short here. It had a few laughable moments and it was interesting to see the famous cast but even they couldnt pull this one off. |

SAVE YOUR MONEY AND SANITY Review by: kyra, Oct 5, 2011 |
Honestly, I read these reviews but had already bought the tickets and thought, surely seeing this is worse than losing money. Nope. No amount of money is worth the verbal assault we endured. It felt like Cohen and Allen had a contempt for the audience, like they were daring you to spend a lot of money on their shows, like it was some kind of cruel psychological experiment where you were the unwitting guinea pig and forced to sit through ... read more some drivel they vomited out of their asses a few decades ago. Cliched. Offensive. Not funny. Felt bad for the poor actors trying to make archetypes seem like real people. PLEASE DO NOT SEE THIS SHOW. GET A ROOT CANAL. WALK ON SHARDS OF GLASS. DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN SEE THIS SHOW. |

What a disppointment! Review by: Out-of-towners, Oct 1, 2011 |
| What a disappointment! I wish I had read the other reviews on this website before buying our tickets. These three famous writers needed a good editor. In fact, I wish the other reviewers had been given the scripts to edit; it would have produced a much more enjoyable evening of theater. The three one-acts would have seemed extraordinary if written by Coen, May and Allen in college -- they would have been very promising. But coming at ... read more this stage of their careers, the plays are shockingly amateurish. To be fair, the actors did the best that could have been done with the material with some standouts: Jason Kravits was great as the doctor in the first play; Marlo Thomas was a delight as Doreen in the second; and Steve Guttenberg was hysterical (aping George Segal?) in the third. |

Rewrite - Relatively Speaking Review by: Yez, Sep 26, 2011 |
| I just saw this during the previews and I must say I was disappointed. I expect much more from Broadway. The first play by Ethan Coen was not well developed, lacked substance, and it was not funny enough. Also, the parents were miscast, they looked too old to be new parents. The second play by Elaine May was much better, it started off very funny but became too serious towards the end. Marlo Thomas was great as Doreen. I would have liked it to ... read more be consistently funny until the end. The third play by Woody Allen was by far the best of the three. I had many laugh out loud moments but I didn't understand most of the jokes from the Rabbi (I'm not Jewish). Over all I got the "relatively speaking" connection but all three plays (especially Coen's) could use some tweaking before opening night. |

Needs tweaking before opening night Review by: lynn, Sep 26, 2011 |
| The third play, written by Woody, had all of his typical themes: old man lusting after young blonde bimbo, writing as a commercial (bad) vs. intellectual (good) career, silly Rabbi humor, no sex or bad sex in marriage. It did have some laugh out loud moments and a great cast. The second play was carried by Marlo Thomas, who we could barely recognize as a blonde. A tragic comedy, and Marlo is terrific. The first, written by Coen,... read more, started out interesting but was not worthy of Broadway. The parents who entered at the end looked like a Woody Allen add-on. All three plays will never be understood by any audience that isn't Jewish and New York-y, and it was barely understood by them. Needs alot of tweaking before opening night. |

A Let Down Review by: Let Down, Sep 25, 2011 |
| The play was OK. The first was a big disappointment. I am a huge Coen Bros. fan as well as John Turturro,(director)and I was left feeling very let down. My husband and I were shocked actually..."That was it?" The second was better but still just OK. Some laughs thanks to Marlo Thomas who did a great job carrying it all. She is entertaining. By the time we got to the third I was thinking did we really waste our money here when there are so many ... read more other great shows in town. Woody Allens "Honeymoon Hotel" was entertaining. It had Woody Allen written all over it. Very fun, great lines, we enjoyed it for the most part. Was this last one enough to make me feel we got our moneys worth and great entertainment...NO.If I had it to do over, I would go see WICKED or something else. :( |

Not what you'd expect from three great writers Review by: Legs, Sep 25, 2011 |
| Pass this one up. Very disappointing. Elaine May's play was quite sad, not the comedy one might expect. Woody Allen's was preposterous and the piece by Ethan Coen was, despite the unusual setting, nothing new. |

Relatively Few Laughs Review by: Mr.O., Sep 25, 2011 |
| I was really expecting something special, but came away disappointed. The first play had a few laughs but quickly sank when the parents appeared. I think I laughed twice during the second. It just seemed forced and couldn't decide if it was supposed to be funny or tragic. Enter the Woody Allen piece (Judy Kavner seemed to be doing a pretty good imitation of him). It holds its own in the laugh department but its very slap sticky. |

Just Okay Review by: Carol, Sep 22, 2011 |
Relatively Speaking is a series of three one-act plays that build from mildly amusing to really funny. Ethan Coen wrote the first with vignettes between a mental patient and his doctor leaving the audience wondering who was more insightful. The second, written by Elaine May, was a preposterous situation in which shallow Doreen (Marlo Thomas) barges into her former nanny's daughter's home and takes over. Never mind that Carla's (Lisa ... read more Emery) marriage is in trouble because of a totally intransigent husband that flies off the handle and wants to move out because his wife has gone to see her 90-year-old mother, the play does not work, and put me into an expensive nap. I was left questioning why May would portray a man like this. The last, entitled Honeymoon Motel, is proof that Woody Allen can still write comedy with some uproarious lines also in a preposterous setting and plot line. Steve Guttenberg and Ari Graynor star in this play that once more has Allen's hang-ups with being Jewish portraying everyone as a bumbling idiot with the rabbi being the worst of them. Should you go? If you want to see some slapstick comedy and old-timers, yes. If you want to see a truly good play, stick to one of the dramas or musicals that Broadway has to offer. |
