A Tony winning play if ever there was one. Review by: Arepo, Jun 12, 2010 |
I am not a fan of two-actor shows normally and went into this one with a lack of enthusiasm. I came out absolutely stunned by the remarkable acting -- best on Broadway this season. These two lived their parts. I mean it. Abstract art is not on my walls or heart but I'll tell you this, I learned a lot from Rothko's view to the point that I now want to see his work anyway. This was an astonishing play and I salute the ... read more director and writer for coming up with a winner. I am still thinking about it the next day. That says it all. |

Run and see real acting for once! Review by: Alfred Molina fan, May 16, 2010 |
There isn't a finer actor than Alfred Molina out there today and this show proves again his talent. He not only plays Mark Rothko, he embodies him with an artists temperament. You both hate and love the character and Mr. Molina makes him totally 3 dimensional with arrogance, wit, craziness, ego and jealousy. If you want to see a real actors actor, then run to this show before it closes in June as it's a short run.

Cerebral Play Review by: NedRacine, May 15, 2010 |
I enjoy Art but I am not a big fan of abstract paintings. Nevertheless, I enjoyed seeing this play which showcased an abstract artist's struggle with his work. Many ideas were expressed by the characters that make you think about what a painting is and what it should do to you. It is definitely a more cerebral play. And that's what makes it good. I took another poster's advise, and purchased the $25.00 seats in the last two rows of the ... read more balcony. Although it seemed far up at first, I found the view quite acceptable. If you are interested in Art, go see it. |

the Color of RED Shines!!!!! Review by: jdkCRITIC, Apr 19, 2010 |
| Yesterday, I went to see my second Broadway show, RED, starring Tony Nominee, Alfred Molina and new comer, Eddie Redmayne. The show is about one of the greatest painters, Mark Rothko (Mr. Molina). In the play, Mr. Rothko is to paint walls, ceilings, and most of the areas, where the Four Seasns Resturant is to be opened. His employee, Ken (Mr. Redmayne) also works on the paints and to have everything ready for The Four Seasons. During the ... read more entire play, both characters interact with eachj other and understand what art really means and shows the color Red with each characters own emotions. The chemestry of both Mr. Molina's and Mr. Redmayne's roles were brilliant and outstanding. Last month, Eddie Redmayne won the Olivier Award (The British Tony) for the same performance which he played a fews last year. In the play, you will see incredible things where the audience is going to be amazed. The show deserves to recieve the TONY NOMINATIONS for Both Mr. Molina's and Mr. Redmayne's roles, for BEST NEW PLAY, BEST DIRECTOR< BEST SCENIC DESIGN, BEST LIGHTING DESIGN, and Many more. This is a show I would strongly recommend for theatre goers, especially artists and people that are into the arts. Without a doubt, this show was very powerful, emotional, great humor, and a show that I would see again and would always remember for the rest of my life. Also, the show inspired me to go back i doing art and never stop doing what you love doing. RED 2010!!! |

Rothko at War With Himself Review by: DoctorJoeE, Apr 11, 2010 |
Okay, you're John Logan - you're writing a serious drama - and you only have two actors to work with - on a dark, gloomy set with basic props, no curtain, and no scene changes - and you're telling a true story to which everybody already knows the ending. You had best come up with one hell of a good script. Fortunately, Logan came up with one hell of a good script for "Red." Superficially, it tells the well-knowned tale of Mark Rothko's ... read more "Seagrams Series": his acceptance of a coveted and lucrative commission to create a series of large canvases for the new Four Seasons restaurant in the Seagrams Building in the late '50s, and his inner struggles with that decision. But deeper down, it's really about Rothko's epic battle, in middle age, with himself; his conflicts about creating important art versus mere decoration for rich collectors and swanky restaurants; his rage at being supplanted, inevitably, by younger talents like Lichtenstein and Warhol, just as he and Jackson Pollack, as young men, had gleefully supplanted Picasso and Dali. The result is intense -- and funny -- and it offers a rare glimpse inside the head of a great artist struggling with his ego and his conscience, and his art. Alfred Molina plays the middle-aged Rothko with inimitable style. The young, idealistic Rothko -- his opponent in his war with himself -- is personified by a young (presumably fictional) assistant named Ken, played by Eddie Redmayne. (It can't be easy when your first Broadway job is taking on Alfred Molina one-on-one, but Redmayne pulls it off rather brilliantly.) Ultimately, of course, Rothko could not make peace with himself; but he did manage to resolve his Seagrams dilemma, and Logan does an excellent job of showing us what he went through to accomplish that. Meanwhile, the production itself shows us, via the artful use of bright fluorescent lights (as opposed to the gloom Rothko insisted upon for creating and viewing his art), how garish and superficial the Seagrams canvases would have looked in the brightly-lit Four Seasons, compared with the deep, dark effect they were created to evoke in low light. It's not a perfect production, of course: One of my pet peeves is playwrights who overemphasize their grander messages, spoon-feeding them, rather than letting us discover them for ourselves. But there is not much else to criticize. "Red" is a tour de force, easily the best dramatic production I've seen on Broadway in years. And you can sit in the rear mezzanine (the Golden is a small theatre, no bad seats) for 25 bucks! So go. These opportunities don't come up that often.

You'll NEVER look at RED the same again! Review by: leawoodcats, Apr 4, 2010 |
RED is a thought-provoking play dealing with art from the perspective of the artist. To fully appreciate the context, it is best to have a background in the arts. But this is by no means a play with just words-there is music and paintings, presented with dramatic lighting, that illuminates the meaning of Rothko. The two actors in this play are superb, and both grow in intensity as the play progresses. The scene where an actual foundation ... read more of a painting is done is very effective. Although this is intended as a story not based on fact, I left the theater feeling that I had gained insight into this great artist, and the art world itself. This is a work not to be missed. |

A Passionate RED Review by: playman, Mar 14, 2010 |
| What a great, powerful show, with a tour de force performance by Alfred Molina. I was engaged in the show from Mr. Molina's first word, he plays Rothko with such ease and his connection to the character leaves you in awe as an audience member. I do think that the final scene could have been trimmed from the play and replaced with a note in the program, but it was still a great night of theatre and I would recommend this show to any lover ... read more of the arts! |
