Holds your interest from start to finish! Review by: fitzrey, Jan 5, 2010 |
My husband & I saw Ragtime and loved every minute of it. The music was wondeful, the story line was an old one, but true to life, the acting great as well. Too bad for all those who will miss it due to it's closing. Get there while you still have time! |

See RAGTIME! Review by: scott o, Jan 4, 2010 |
| I saw Ragtime Dec 15th and loved it. The cast were all great but the real star here is the music. The staging (and casting) seem to be purposely spare in order to focus on the score. The set and many of the important props (the piano, the car) are shells that can be seen through, viewed from different perspectives, and imagined-much like the story itself. Nothing distracts from the story. I really loved this show, very moving. ... read more I would highly recommend it! |

I've seen the show twice and each time came away with the pleasurable feeling of satisfaction seeing a really wonder wonderfully performed musical that leaves you thinking about life and how we live it. A classical musical filled with memorable songs and performances that soar and leave you with emotional satisfaction. I am sad to hear that it will close on Sunday. Go quickly to see it . |

The music of something beginning! Let them hear you! Review by: FogBuffy, Dec 31, 2009 |
An immediate standing ovation doesn't happen all that often in theater I have found. I have been to plenty of shows in New York over the years but this is by far THE BEST show I have ever seen. I went in with high hopes, having seen and loved 3 productions of this wonderful musical in California but by expectations were still met and exceeded! I was blown away from the first number. And I was so red-eyed from emotions at intermission I ... read more didn't dare move from my seat. I was thrilled to see that most of the audience felt like I did and jumped to their feet as soon as the curtain came up after the last scene. A show chock-full of Broadway debuts and it really packs a punch! It is ultimately disappointing to hear this beautiful and moving show is closing so soon. The people who choose to see Phantom or Chicago for the 9th time instead of trying something like Ragtime don't know what they're missing. It's also sad to hear a cast album isn't even in the plans. |

DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!!! Review by: addisondewitt, Dec 29, 2009 |
| I understand that this magnificent show is closing on January 3rd. I had seen it in previews and was planning to go again. Now, time is running out. If you are reading this, love great theater and can find time between now and January 3rd, PLEASE GO. You will not be disappointed. (Maybe if Emma Goldman had been a flying monkey, or Tateh a green ogre. Oh, well!) |

Why is this show not being seen? Review by: rskblueyes, Dec 15, 2009 |
I saw the show on December 12. it was a truly amazing experience. The acting, score and staging are first rate. I saw the original production in 1998 and loved it, but this current production although scaled down on scenery, the emotions are much more prevalent. Since are not distracted by all the sets, you tune in more on the characters. All the leads and supporting cast give it there all. I must single out the ... read more actors playing Tateh and Coalhouse, both are powerhouses with their acting and vocals. The original production was eclipsed by the lion King, anyother year it would have swept the Tonys. It seems that this production is still being overlooked. Dont miss it. |

Not as Good as the Original or the Movie Review by: Carol, Dec 4, 2009 |
This was a disappointment after Audra McDonald and Brian Stokes Mitchell in the 1998 production. The leads are not larger than life, but they are adequate in the roles. I have no idea what the critics are raving about. |

Ragtime unfocused, lacking creativity ... but the performances were good. Review by: Baltasar, Nov 28, 2009 |
Overly This is an ambitious and at times unfocused story which incorporates undeveloped and superfluous characters (e.g., Evelyn Nesbitt and Harry Houdini) who distract from the story more than they add to it (although Mr. Hammond's Houdini was entertaining). Also, I had difficulty clearly hearing the lyrics to many of the songs -- as did my date -- and was somewhat bored by (and had difficulty staying awake during) much of the first act. ... read more Notably, however, the second act was far more creative, interesting and moving. For example, the staging itself was actually interesting as the action shifted back and forth from the exterior to the interior of a library for an important scene. However, such creativity was lacking in the first act, which seemed to lack a narrative focus or energy. The music was relatively drab and repetitive (which was also disappointing and somewhat surprising since I like ragtime music), especially in the first act. The songs, nevertheless, were well performed by able vocalists (Ms. Umoh, Ms. Noll, and Mr. Darrington, in particular). However, they were, for the most part, unremarkable compositions -- although Mr. Darrington's (Colehouse Walker Jr.'s) final song was stirring and powerful. Also, I found the choreography of the musical numbers oddly dull and unsophisticated -- although Mr. Petkoff's fluid and agile descent down the back of a staircase during one song was a notable exception and the multi-level stage was initially used well for dramatic effect. The performers themselves were entertaining and the second act is much better than the first, but this musical is disappointing on several levels and would benefit from a substantial revision, the addition (or substitution)of some livelier songs, the elimination (or substantial reduction in the roles) of superfluous characters, more sophisticated choreography, and some more creative staging. As for the Neil Simon Theater itself, I felt that the rows were too close together and the theater was a bit warm, which also detracted somewhat from the overall experience. Also, the bathrooms were too small to accomodate the crowds during the intermission. Though there is much to like about the performances, overall I would not recommend this show. |

Fantastic Review by: LadyL, Nov 7, 2009 |
I saw Ragtime today and used Broadway Box. I didn't know what to expect. The show was fantastic, Thrilling, emotional, and the costumes were right on target. I see a Tony in Quentin Earl Darrigton's future, and I beg to disagree with the poster regarding the lady who played, Sara, Stephanie Umoh. Her talent is strong, she put tears in my eyes.

A Glorious Score Heard Again in this Stirring Revival Review by: dear theatergoer, Nov 6, 2009 |
| Ragtime has always been one of my favorite musicals. The original cast (Mitchell, McDonald, Mazzie, etc.) was perfection and the score, book, and orchestration were exceptional. (I still feel it should have won the Tony for Best Musical back then.) Now the revival comes to town and though it doesn't have the star power of the original, it certainly has superior staging by Marcia Dodge, a powerful cast to belt out its score, and a similar impact ... read more as the original production. The director's rethinking of the show and its choreography and set design make this new production very effective with a more streamlined staging that truly enhances a fine show. Ragtime is a more seriously-minded play for the more sophisticated audience, which I hope still exists these days. It packs an emotional wallop and should be high on any theatergoer's must-see list. |

Impressive production Review by: IggyCat, Nov 5, 2009 |
We were impressed by this production of Ragtime: The music, staging, and acting are all on a grand scale. I can't say anything bad about the show, although if you're trying to choose among some of the new musicals on Broadway, I have to admit I liked Memphis quite a bit more than this show. Memphis took the singing and dancing and emotional connection to a higher level, but by and large either show is a great night out. |
