"There is greatness" at Judson Gym! Hurry before it goes away! Review by: Concourse Diva, Nov 30, 2011 |
| Before the X Games, before "Jackass", before Evil Knievel at Snake River Canyon on ABC Wide World of Sports there was Anna Edson Taylor and the Niagara Daredevils. This amazing show features 2 time Tony-nominated actress Mary Testa giving the kind of star-making, tour-de-force performance that becomes legend (think Merman In "Gypsy", Channing in "Hello Dolly", Lupone as "Evita")in a repurposed gym adjacent to Washington Square Park.... read more. Testa tackles this role of a lifetime--written expressly for her (the sheet music is inscribed "For Mary")by Tony-nominated composer Michael John LaChiusa, backed up by a small cast of Broadway regulars (including a former Wicked "Elpheba" and soon-to-be-a huge-star Andrew Samonsky from South Pacific)in a beautiful "chamber" musical that is ostensibly about a 63 year old schoolmarm in the Victorian age who defied the odds and her times when she became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and live but, like so many great musicals, it is about so much more-sexism, ageism and the good old American grab for 15 minutes of fame. This show is a hidden gem that everyone should see. |
