Spanish- African American 101 Review by: saucy, Mar 10, 2011 |
| Myself and a friend went to see this play. To say I was disappointed is an understatment. The advertisements make me cringe beacause I personally know it's not all that's its hyped up to be. I felt like I was in a spanish- African American History class. There was little love in the play. Whole lot of lesson. |

EXCEPTIONAL Review by: LJS and LBA, Mar 29, 2010 |
| I went to see this with one of my female friends and we BOTH absolutely loved this play. We are telling everyone we know to go and see this play. It is a play for all ages. I have read some of the comments here on this site and people need to approach off broadway plays with a blank mind and not expect to see a BROADWAY PRODUCTION. The cast appeared to be college students but their acting was phenomenal. You will get out of the play what you ... read more mind lets you. It is a love story, a story of racial division between blacks and latinos--one that to this day SHOULD NOT EXIST, but does STILL. You will either love this play or hate it. If you approach it with an open mind you will embrace the meaning of the play and all that it represents--CHANGE and an OPEN MIND to CHANGE. |

If you enjoy good theatre, this is not for you. Review by: Mary M., Oct 25, 2009 |
| I'm sorry but this is not a good show if you require your theatrical experience in New York City to have good actors, a set design, a storyline with good character development and resolve, then you will be as disappointed as I having endured 2.5 hours of this preachy high-school like hip hop production. |

An Expressive Reality Review by: Magik Moe One, Jun 28, 2009 |
| The show was great! I really enjoyed this play on fathers day. This show should be broadcasted on a higher level. It shows the poeple of color, hispanics and blacks, that we are all the same. It expresses the minds of the ignorant, and it also opens the minds of the stubborn. This show is what every young man that grows up living with mixed cultures should see. i aplaude the writer for a well projected play. |

It's REAL Review by: PH, Jun 15, 2009 |
After reading some of the reviews listed on this site, it's unfortunate to see that some people went to see the show with preconditions and set expectations. This was a wonderful play that was filled with educational facts about the Latino and Black cultures. When you go see a play you must be open-minded, otherwise, most will seem like a waste of time at end. Platanos & Collard Greens was educational, funny, and most of all REAL. The ... read more real experiences of Latinos and Blacks are well depicted. If you are into fiction and made up stuff, you should skip this play because it's based on reality. It's well worth watching! :) P.S. It would be nice if people stopped using this forum to vent about internal issues and focus on its purpose- providing a review. |

Platanos and Collard Greens go together like...Jim Crow laws and oppression. Review by: George, Mar 22, 2009 |
When I heard about Platanos and Collard Greens, it was said that it pushed the envelope in a way that challenged people and was uplifting. It was called funny, something anyone can relate to, great black theater, and a list of other things that would surely cause anyone to be interested. Sadly, this show fell short of it's billing. Way short. When I first walked into the theater, I marveled at the beautiful performance space. The theater ... read more itself was so gorgeous that it took me a while to realize how low the production value of the show was. I get that some shows don't have fancy sets and detailed lights but the show felt like something put on by a group of high schoolers with no budget. This show often tours, but at an Off Broadway theater at these ticket prices I expected more visual aspects than I would get at a community theater production. Would it have killed someone to get a real chair, table or a set piece that couldn't have been obtained at a 99 cents store? This could've been overlooked if the story or the acting was particularly strong but quite frankly both were not. It wasn't so much that the actors weren't good (which most weren't) but the fact that they didn't have to be. It seemed like the director thought as long as the characters were "black enough" to fit their stereotypes of what the educated black person who still "keeps it real" is then the audience would love them. The story was so random and unfocused that by the second act I couldn't even remember what the play was even about. (I won't even get into how preachy the show was or the facts that Latinoes come off as self-hating hypocrites and white people come off again as surprise, surprise the devil.) I've never been to a show where the actors wear the shows’ merchandise as costume pieces. Imagine my shock when I saw it during this one. The fact that there was no set or costume designer listed didn't fill me with confidence but didn't surprise me either. It all came off as a well-planned trick. Let's take an audience that does not often go to theater, take issues that affect them, stir up their anger, cater to their perceived ignorance, throw in some slap stick comedy, mention God, spew things about black people being beautiful, have an all minority cast and call it a night. Meanwhile the audience won't notice that they sat watching a show for two and a half hours that not only didn't have a plot or a logical progression of events, but also insulted them in the process. Did the audience really need to be told that it was intermission and that act 2 was starting? Was a joke about CPT (colored people time) really necessary when telling them they only had 10 minutes? The show had an opportunity to reach a new audience and get them to think on a different level. Instead it seemed like I was watching a real life version of the Man-Tan and Sleep and Eat show from the movie Bamboozled directed by Spike Lee. (PLEASE SEE THAT MOVIE IF YOU HAVEN'T ALREADY!!) This show should not be considered an example of black theater much like Tyler Perry’s work or BET shouldn’t be considered a representation of the culture. Sadly they are and the work of true artists like Susan Lori-Parks, Lynn Notage and August Wilson don’t get the credit that they deserve from the general public. Please skip this show or go see it for what it is…An example that black entertainment still has a lot of rising up to do. |

It's not what I expected! Review by: JULES, Sep 1, 2008 |
| Well, I went with some friends. Within the 6 friends these were the reviews (2 enjoyed it), (2 hated it), and (2 expected more). I was one of the one that expected more. I thought that the "title" had a lot of potential but, it fell through! I did love the fact that it offered history (I was a History Major in College) however, it appeared to be slow moving and never really dealt with the issues at hand. In addition, i believe that ... read more it could have been more $$ spent on backround scenery and costumes...I mean, I applaud the brother who put it out but, I just expected more....It reminded me of a school play that I was in at school...(low budget)...I mean, I didn't hate it but, I wouldn't go see it again! |

Review by: Raven, Sep 15, 2007 |
| This play was not what I expected. It is basically about two different cultures and African Americans trying to point out that we are like them because we have African roots. I agree that we do share African roots but the similarities stop there. African American culture is not as influenced from Africa as the Hispanic culture is. You can hear the drums and rhythm in our music and taste the herbs & spices in our food. Yes, we both hail ... read more from African roots the same way Middle Easterns, Brazilians, Scilians, Asians, etc. do however our cultures are different. Either way, why drone on about "you are like us" when we should embrace differences and just get along instead of trying to feel you have to prove someone is of African ancenstory or not. In the end, we are all of the human race. And that's ONE race. |

the story just isn't important in today's society Review by: , Sep 4, 2007 |
| Wasn't really impressed but I guess that's what you get for not being "Broadway". As far as off off bdway is concerned, the production was well done, but the story just isn't important in today's society. |
