Worth a second viewing ... maybe even a third. Review by: DoctorJoeE, Feb 17, 2013 |
"Peter and the Starcatcher" is impossibly over-acted, ridiculously farcical, miles over the top ... and absolutely wonderful. And very funny. It's a prequel (to "Peter Pan"), but nothing like the other prequel currently playing, "Wicked", which is a sober reminder that there's always another side to a story, and the heroes and villains may not be who you think they are. This one offers no profound moral message; it's a farce, pure and simple.... read more. Like any prequel, you know how it will end; the mystery is how it gets there. Don't even try to predict. And don't try to follow the logic, such as it is. The plot toggles all over the place at an impossibly fast clip. Humorous anachronisms abound. It's not a musical, per se, but there is music. The actors act, sing, dance, do stunts, serve as most of their own props, and exercise themselves to exhaustion. (I wish I had the massage concession for this show.) The Peter character begins as a helpless, nameless orphan who hates grownups. The future Captain Hook is an inept pirate named Black Stache (presumably a riff on Blackbeard ... get it?). Christian Borle won a Tony for this role during the Broadway run. Peter's love interest (sort of) is the Starcatcher. (Don't ask.) Some reviewers of the Broadway production said the show isn't for children, but I can't imagine why not; there's no cussing or inappropriate innuendo, and our audiences both times (on Broadway and here at the "multiplex") were loaded with kids who all seemed thoroughly entertained; as were we (my wife and I). We seldom see a show twice, but we did this one, and might just go back again. As Peter says, it's an "awfully big adventure."
