wonderful show Review by: shayt, Aug 15, 2012 |
| I went to see this show to see james corden, whose work i loved from the show "Gavin and Stacey". I found out when i got to the theater that his understudy would be in the role for the wednesday matinee. I asked a man working there if this is his forst time not in the role, and he said "No, this was the second time". Well, his understudy was amazing and the cast made a few very funny jokes at James Corden's expense. I really needed ... read more to laugh and I did laugh throughout the show. This show ends on September 2nd and I am grateful I did not miss it (Even though i did miss Mr. Corden's performance) i am grateful to have sen this magnificent show and cast. |

Funniest play since "The Producers"!! Review by: AmandaL1969, Jul 22, 2012 |
| Saw this tonight with my husband, based on a recommendation from a friend. It was honestly, the funniest play I've ever seen. We saw "Book of Mormon" about 6 months ago, and both agreed that we thought this was even funnier!! If you miss this show, you will have missed out on the funniest show to hit Broadway since "The Producers". Run, don't walk!! We laughed until our stomachs hurt! Brilliant! |

Loved it! Review by: Tish, Jul 15, 2012 |
| Saw this show on Thursday evening (July12) it was hilarious! Printed the coupon from Broadway Box and purchased 2 seats in a box at a terrific price at the theatre box office on day before. We loved the music, the cast and especially James Corden, the Tony win was well deserved. He kindly signed our playbill after the show and posed for photos. Will probably see this again before it closes! |

Bathroom Humor: vulgar and in my book not funny Review by: , Jun 30, 2012 |
| This is NOT the hilarious farce that Fawlty Towers was--I thought it would be and I was terribly disappointed that it wasn't. Yes, the first few pratfalls are funny, but then: enough! You get the point. But worse, the comedy is bathroom humor which I do NOT think is funny., If you think that vomiting and farting onstage is hilarious, don't miss this. But I think bathroom humor is vulgar and NOT witty or funny by any means. It is music hall ... read more vaudeville humor, NOT farce Moliere style. This is NOT the humor that Noises Off had. Be warned!! |

You will Bust a Gut Laughing! Review by: Gymdandy, Jun 18, 2012 |
| I didn't think I was going to enjoy this show in the first 5 minutes. I couldn't understand the accents. But, then James Corden tried to lift up a trunk and I couldn't stop laughing from that point on. You've seen this all before, girl dressed up as a guy, mistaken identities, jolly fat guy, the old waiter, etc. But, you still laugh really hard. James Corden, a brilliant physical comedian (who just won the Tony Award) interacts ... read more with the audience and I wasn't sure if these people were real or plants-probably both. But it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the show. Mario Batali was in the audience the night I went- always cool to see a famous person. One drawback-the musical interludes. To me it was just filler and it was too loud and repetitive. Bravo to the entire cast! |

Bloody Ears But Bloody Good Fun Review by: Dietgrl, Jun 16, 2012 |
| Was in town for a seminar at the beginning of June. Wanted to see a musical, but was lured by the short ticket line for plays. Heard this play was funny. I was confused by the 10 minute opening act(?) before the play started. Sounded like a Beatles cover band at a LOUD, LOUD volume that made my ears bleed. Was this a play or a musical, a playsical? I was ready to complain to the management that my hearing was being destroyed, but finally, ... read more finally a play started and it was pretty darned funny. A British farce circa 1700s was updated to the 1960s. One hysterically funny man gets two jobs, has two bosses and the laughs ensue. While James Corden got the Tony award, all the actors are equally as funny. The musical interludes come between scene changes and all the actors participate. If there is a person in charge of sound at this play he needs to be fired! Also, this is NOT a children's play, there were two very young children behind me, under ten years old, this play (of course) includes randy jokes about sex that are expected at a British farce. |

Laugh till you Cry...... after 250 yrs. still a HIT !!! Review by: Diract 66, Jun 13, 2012 |
| Simply the BEST comedy to see right now. Go see it for a laughingly good time. Based on the Carlo Goldoni Commedia dell'arte play ,The Servant of Two Masters, this transfers all the early elements of Commedia to our present day Broadway. If you can't see the original 'Servant' in production, see this. All the stock characters are here and the best is the new Harlequin of Broadway, James Corden. There is no disagreement that his is a Tony ... read more well deserved. There is even a slapstick in this show, although you may not recognize it. It is something we all have around the house. A garbage can lid! The story is basic farce stock, mistaken characters, mistaken identity, mistaken notes, lover quarrels, etc.It is the story of a servant serving two masters at the same time, neither one aware of the other. I must say that there is one other top performance in this show, that of Tom Edden as Alfie the waiter. If you don't laugh during his scene, with his excellent facial expressions and character traits, then you are dead! It may take a little while to get used to the British accents but it should not bother you after a few minutes. I did not care for the music and band use during the set changes. It only slows down the play, and adds nothing to the show. Commedia actors knew their characters, the outline of the plot, and improvised a lot to tell their story. This will appear like that, but of course, it is not. Or is it ? SEE THIS SHOW FOR A FANTASTIC FUN EVENING. Every comedy written today has elements from this almost three hundred year old play formula. Something old IS something new . |

Silly fun! Review by: gymdandy, Jun 10, 2012 |
| I couldn't understand the actors' accents for the first 5 minutes and thought I would hate this play, but once James Corden arrived, the fun began. You've seen this before, the jolly fat guy, the old waiter, girl pretending to be a guy, but it's so funny you can't stop laughing. I didn't like the musical numbers-they seemed like filler to me. While the cast were talented singers, the music was too loud and I wished I had brought earplugs. The ... read more audience was employed to help out James Corden. One or two audience members seemed like plants, but I still enjoyed the fun. |

if you're in the mood for top-notch physical comedy Review by: Tom bestor, Jun 10, 2012 |
There are times you go to the theater to be inspired or moved, or to see a bit of the human condition revealed and made clear. Then there is "One Man, Two Guvnors." While I'm sure there is some satire about class and oppression buried beneath the clowning and the puns and the pratfalls, that's not the point of this adaptation of Carlo Goldoni's commedia dell'arte farce "The Servant of Two Masters," reset in 60s-era Brighton. The point ... read more is to make you laugh. And it does. As long as you can laugh at silliness and exaggeration and the misfortune of others. Primarily you will be laughing at the misfortune and antics of Francis Henshall, the harlequin played (nearly to perfection) by James Corden. Though he looks quite well-fed, Henshall is ravenous when the play begins, seeking something - anything - to eat. His guvnor (cockney slang for employer) hasn't paid him, so when a second job falls in his lap, he snatches it. Now he has two bosses to please, neither of which knows about the other. That's about it for plot. But plot's not the point. The plot's just there to provide excuses for Corden to perform a series of hysterical physical bits, some as old as the commedia form itself. You might find it hard to believe that someone can make the moving of a trunk funny for 10 minutes, but Corden pulls it off - with a little help from a couple of audience members. To be honest, of shows that pay tribute to the British pantos, I prefer"The 39 Steps," a show that played Broadway and toured the nation over the past couple of years. It featured more theatrical invention, a real plot and just as much inspired silliness. Unfortunately, it's closed. But if you're in the mood for top-notch physical comedy, "One Man, Two Guvnors" fits the bill to a T. Or should that be "tea"?

I'm usually not a fan of British humor since it tends to be a bit slapstick so I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this show. The British accents at times were difficult to understand but it did not interfere with the enjoyment of the show. James Corden was a riot! |
