Clash of the Titans Review by: Diract 66, Nov 23, 2010 |
| One hundred years ago this play was closed in NY and the actors were put in jail because of its content. this play still holds up in its theme. Although, what's a woman to do, turning to prostitution, as a way out of a poor enviornment may be questionable, is it really? Today, maybe that young woman would turn to porn, and should she be ashamed of her success if she made millions? The face off between the two main characters is reason enough to ... read more see this play. Cherry Jones and Sally Hawkins are a dynamic duo and the second act scene between the two is terrific acting. Will the two ever see each other again? Both woman are strong willed. Beautiful sets, great acting, one hundred years old....show a little respect. See this show! |

Good Period Piece, Spoiled by a Poor Performance Review by: DoctorJoeE, Oct 10, 2010 |
Shaw is always great, even when he takes on a serious subject like this one. And this would be a great production if someone else were playing Frank Gardner. He's supposed to be a snarkey, hot-headed young ne'er-do-well, contemptuous of his elders yet envious of their lifestyle, and aggressively protective of Vivie. But Adam Driver plays him like somebody with Asberger's syndrome -- with a completely flat affect. The sarcasm is ... read more barely visible, and the rage is nowhere to be found. I understand period pieces are difficult, but this is Broadway! Reciting your lines is not nearly enough; you have to act, too. Unfortunately, the Frank Gardner character is pivotal to the story line, so this one poor performance significantly diminishes all the other, quite good performances. Sally Hawkins tries valiantly, in a challenging role -- she must go home with a sore throat every night, after all those cries of anguish. Cherry Jones contributes a good performance as well, though not nearly as good as in "Doubt" (for which she won a Tony). Edward Hibbert, Mark Harelik, and Michael Siberry, veteran actors all, are fine in the supporting roles, but none of it is good enough to overcome Driver's high-schoolish non-acting. However, I would still (reluctantly) recommend this production to those interested in classic drama, because there are so few opportunities to see Shaw's plays these days; Lord knows when your next chance might be to see this one. It should be noted that this play raised a huge ruckus when it was first produced, in 1905 or thereabouts: It debuted on Broadway, because the London censor had declared it obscene; and the entire cast and crew, and the theatre owner, were arrested by New York Police! The dialog and subject matter seems quite tame today -- Mrs. Warren's actual profession is never even mentioned by name -- but Shaw's principal theme, the shortage of opportunities for career and societal advancement by poor women, is still remarkably relevant. Kudos to Roundabout for continuing to revive these classic works. |

A Miscast Cherry Jones Review by: BroadwayBaby, Oct 2, 2010 |
I wanted to love this production, alas Cherry Jones' "Cockney" accent sounded more like Annie Oakley and she just seemed woefully miscast as Mrs Warren,Sally Hawkins was fine , if rather kinetic,I very much enjoyed Adam Driver as Frank Gardner, but not enough to sit through the second part of the show... I left at intermission. |

See it for Cherry Jones, Edward Hibbert and Michael Siberry Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Sep 17, 2010 |
| We loved Sheree Rene North's show "Everyday Rapture" that recently ran at this theater. This play is an animal of a different color - it's from a very different era, and in some ways it's very confusing - for example, when the daughter thinks her mother is no longer operating a brothel then she judges her mother a heroine, but once she learns her mother is still running houses of ill repute, she is shunned. What on earth does ... read more this mean? And why revive it? The story is not relevant to us, and this is not the best Shaw play - but see it for wonderful acting from Cherry Jones, Edward Hibbert and Michael Siberry, who are each absolutely perfect in their roles, and bring it to life. Sally Hawkins as the daughter was not good at the performance that we saw, too strident and over the top, but the actors above were great and carried it. See it too for the excellent sets, lighting and lovely costumes. Recommended. |

Great acting; good play Review by: IggyCat, Sep 14, 2010 |
| I sort of agree with the previous reviewer in that the actors in this play were uniformly excellent. The play and sets were strong, too. I guess my only little caveat is that this is an old Shaw play, over a century old, set in English and involving complex social and gender dynamics that were true to the time period. I found it a little difficult to truly connect with the play or feel like it was truly relevant for this reason. That said,... read more, if you're comfortable with revivals of older plays that reflect a different time and place, this is a very strong, impressive production. |

Sally Hawkins and Cherry Jones face off. Review by: Old Sarge, Sep 8, 2010 |
I wasn't expecting a real winner, but this turns out to be the best play from Roundabout in several years. Brilliant story, fine dialog, very good sets. I was expecting Chreey Jones to be verey good, and she was, but the role of the daughter, played by London's Sally Hawkins, was a much more demanding role, and Miss Hawkins delivered the finest acting job in a long time. Forget the stupid looking ad with the colored sunglasses and plan ... read more on seeing this one. |
