POWERFUL SHOW CLASSLESS AUDIENCE Review by: BobK, Jul 10, 2011 |
| Wow Wow Wow what a show! The cast(with the exception of Chris Rock who does not belong in a Broadway show)was superb. The writing, acting, direction, sets and story line were all totally brilliant. Some input for those that found it vulgar etc.The title alone should give you a clue if this type of show you find offensive. So do your homework before purchasing any tickets.Ditto for The Book of Mormon. What I do find most distressing ... read more in general for Broadway shows these days is the type of audience that attends. When I saw The Mother....... sitting behind me in $125.00 seats were "a group" who brought into the theater buckets of KFC chicken. The ushers asked them to deposit the food in disposal bags or leave the theater. Then the racist slurs started against the ushers. Finally the police had to be brought in and "the group" was given 5 minutes to deposit the food or leave. They begrudgingly got rid of the food but proceeded to talk throughout the show (which started 1/2 hour late)about the incident.Message to "the group" go to the movies with you KFC and don't ruin Broadway for those that understand Broadway and the manners expected. |

Worth a Try-- Adults, Please Review by: Daffy2, Jul 7, 2011 |
| Clever considering such a thin story line. Acting was well above average with the exception of Chris Rock's, which was poor enough to irritate me considering the cost of the tickets. And, he was miscast in my opinion--perhaps knowingly as he is a huge box office draw. Elizabeth Rodriquez is a real standout. |

Must-See for Adults Review by: Carol, Jun 30, 2011 |
The play explores the feelings and complications of the people inhabiting the underbelly of society. Bobby Canavale is outstanding as Jackie. Chris Rock is good as his A.A. sponsor, but the real stand-out in the show is Elizabeth Rodriguez portraying Veronica, Jackie's love interest. The relationships of people destined to poison everyone they touch are brilliantly explored by Stephen Adly Guirgis, playwright and co-artistic director ... read more of LAByrinth Theater Company, with which most of the cast is affiliated. The harrowing plot is not without hilarity for a mature audience who want to be transported by a superb production with extraordinary set design. |

| Took my 16 year old son and there was nothing in the text that was not heard before by either of us. We both thought it was excellent. I think you have to be liberal-minded and not offended by language for one to enjoy this with their teenager. We discussed it afterwrds and though I rarely swear, it is important that he knows that there is a world of people who need to put the F word in front of everything to get their point across. |

| Perfect casting everyone fits and acts their Mother ******* butt off. It wouldn't work without the profanity laced dialogue, which is just another degrading part of every day life for these miserable souls trapped by their life choices and miserable surroundings. |

Closes July 17 See it Today, A Great Play Review by: njnetsfan, Jun 1, 2011 |
| Took my son to see The Mother *****ker with the Hat today and it was absolutely terrific! I have been seeing plays since the early 1960's and this was one of the most original and well acted plays I have seen. Yes the language has many 4 letter words in it, but folks this is appropriate for the play. Again, one of the best performances I have seen in a number of years. |

I want more from Stephen Adly Guirgis! Review by: , May 29, 2011 |
Fantastic! This play made up for a very under-whelming season. I did not like the title so it was the LAST play I saw before the Tony's. Boy was I surprised. And it has been too long since I was pleasantly surprised by a play. The language is strong but it is REAL. It was not there for shock value. One "got it" that this is they way these people talk all the time. Now I understand why Bobby Cannavale was nominated. He was amazing. I ... read more went with girlfriends who do not like strong language but we all agreed that after the first act we did not even think about it. It was definitely part of the characters. I want more from Stephen Adly Guirgis. Simply the best play I have seen this season. |

| If adult language and an adult subject matter are for you than run to see this play. It was by far the best play I have seen in at least 2 years. Bobby Cannavale and Elizabeth Rodriquez were superb!! The weak link was Chris Rock, but he was Ok in his debut broadway performance. I kept thinking he was doing his stand-up act. Yul Vazquez was very, very good and this was also his broadway debut. I am looking forward to more plays from Stephen ... read more Guirgis. What a talent. |

A coarse and vulgar assault Review by: Sally, May 26, 2011 |
There were a few funny lines but the four of us who saw the play felt assaulted - by the coarse and vulgar language, the story line (of lying and cheating in relationships), and the noise of the production. The characters - most of them devious and amoral types - were poorly developed. If you removed the word F****** from the play, it would only be about an hour long. The sexual ... read more language was too raw and delivered for effect rather than as a part of the story or character development. When we left, we said we wished we could take a shower!! |

The MFER w/the hat---Meh Review by: jgrody, May 25, 2011 |
| Very weak writing, no in depth soul searching, a few tortured laughs which were genuinely funny. The cast just has not that much to work with in terms of content. They do beautifully with what they are given. Yul Vasquez was plugged into his role as Cousin Julio, which excelled his part far above the others in terms of emotional complexity and understanding. He is a rising star, but...............skip this one |

I'm Going To See It Again!!!!! Review by: Rickstar, May 12, 2011 |
Jackie (Bobby Cannavale) is a recently recovering drug addict who continues to live with his currently drug addicted girlfriend, Veronica (Elizabeth Rodriguez). Jackie comes home and finds a hat on a table and immediately assumes that veronica is cheating on him. Jackie has an AA sponsor, Ralph (Chris Rock) who is also a recovering addict whom he confides in. Jackie uses drugs because he’s chasing a life filled with bubble gum streets,... read more, lined with lollipop trees and gingerbread houses. Ralph obviously took the red pill in the Matrix because he sees life for what it is. As a result, he’s suppressed his addiction. The two differing perspectives contribute to a confrontation between the two “friends”. What makes this play special is that you can fill-in the blanks with your own addiction or vice (however slight or severe) and see your own life play out on stage. Also, you can relate to the play if you’ve hurt someone you’d loved, or have been hurt by someone you thought loved you. Jackie’s cousin Julio (Yul Vazquez) adds comic relief and “lightens” the tone of the play. Julio is phenomenal! Ralph’s wife, Victoria’s (Annabella Sciorra) intro is in the background and she never quite gels into the play. When the play ends (the time flies) it leaves you wondering if Jackie had a relapse or a revelation. In the grand scheme of things, the mother@*#!er with the hat is irrelevant. The dialogue that he inspires makes the play. I would definitely see it again and the continuation, if it ever happened. The storyline is surely strong enough to support a follow-up, IMHO.

A Very Surprising Play..It was VERY GOOD !! Review by: Javy, Apr 24, 2011 |
I had the Opportunity to catch this Play. I was looking for Chris Rock to show me a little, but I have to say He showed me ALOT. The Production was quick, and the story line was interesting and kept you with the characters and the Storyline. It was funny, and dramatic when needed to be. At Times, the Actors forced the emotions, but by Second Act the actors gelled well. I have to say, ELIZABETH RODRIGUEZ showed reange, emotions,... read more, and comic timing. If you are reading this Mrs. Rodriguez, Be Prepared to Pick up your Best Actress Tony. WELL DESERVED !! |

Watch out for hard core language and sexual imagery...NOT OK FOR KIDS!!!! Review by: broadway, Apr 21, 2011 |
| We just saw this play and it was said to be okay for kids 14 and up. I brought my 16 year old daughter because we are big fans of Bobby Cannavale (Station Agent, Win Win, etc.) This play had not only an extraordinary amount of cursing, but a great deal of graphic sexual imagery being portrayed by the language. The acting may be good, but both my daughter and I felt it was an assault. We walked out. Beware. |

Solid new play Review by: , Apr 19, 2011 |
| With so many choices on Broadway, I wasn't sure whether this was the right play for me and a friend, but I was greatly surprised by this show. It's very well written and tightly directed. Chris Rock does a respectable job for his Broadway debut, but the stars of this show are Bobby Cannavale and Elizabeth Rodriguez. The play is funny and sharp with a thread of melancholy sadness. The set design is amazing. Overall, this is worth seeing. It's not ... read more for the kiddies because of the language and drug use, but if you want to see an exciting new play, this is a good choice. |
