This was cool and all but ofcourse it had a little problems. A few actors forgot their que and others forgot their lines. Only thing good about it was the comedy(it didn't seam like that was on purpose but still, ha-halarious. I think it could have been waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy better but atleast you tried. Breing Eartha To The Carlyle! Review by: John, Dec 2, 2006 |
I just came from "mimi le Duck". I was absolutely blown away, astonished! By what? By the fact that the director had assembled on one stage, in the middle of New York, seven uninteresting, uncharismatic actors who move through their high school kids who didn't get cast in the annual school show. Yes, they can, with one exception, sing. But they are the most bloodless, uninspiriting lot I have ever seen.
They fare full ... read more of good will though, but not towards the audience. They fight hard to hide from us their own awareness that this piece rises to no level whatsoever but just lies there center stage, surrounded by too many rolling set pieces. Every once in awhile---too seldom---a rare artifact of American entertainment glory, Ms. Eartha Kitt, is rolled out on the stage in an attempt to bring the whole thing to life. Ms. Kitt can bump and grind with an elegance that suggests her moves were choreographed by Balanchine. She can sing with a clear and expressive voice that requires no miking. She can just sit and listen and by doing so create a whole story. What she cannot do is keep the show alive when she is not on it. When she exits, so does the "show". All the rest is "tell". Would that the rest had been silence but my luck didn't hold and I had to sit through a good hour and thirty minutes to get 15 minutes of gold in the person of Ms. Kitt. What does it say about American theater that this grand dame is not provided with material that suits her personal and artistic accomplishment? Oh, pardon. There isn't any, anywhere in New York? I forgot! She is her only equal. Let's hope she comes back to the Carlyle real soon, so we can spend even more than the Duck tickets cost, and learn something: what entertainment and performance are really about. |

| This was such a waste of great talent-Eartha Kitt and Ken Jennings especially. I almost walked out of my first Broadway show-ever-and I've seen hundreds of shows on and off Broadway. It had the worst score and lyrics and book I have ever seen and heard. I could have spent that money eating a real duck. I was totally embarrassed for the talented cast and for Ms. Kitt. It was just not as good as it was quacked up to be. Jack |

Eartha Kitt is marvelous in her role but hardly the only reason to see this great show. New World Stages is the perfect forum for this musical, and the entire cast is well worth seeing. The music and voices are great. The generous use of Hemingway is quite humorous. Annie Golden is great as a woman on the brink who chooses Paris over... well see the show.
It's an odd but simple tale that works well and makes for a great matinee! |

| What a waste of two hours. The producers should have invested in a review of Eartha Kitts's life as a one woman show. She truly was the most entertaining part of this lifeless show. Through the second half I kept hearing the vibrations of "Evil Dead The Musical" which seemed to be rockin in the theater next door. Putting a man in a dress does not make a show campy. This show lacked enery, originality and overall creativity. Like most people who went to this production, I went because of the actors involved. Tom Aldredge, Eartha Kitt, Annie Golden. How could you go wrong, right?
Oy. While another reviewer called this “campy” and “fun”, I found myself completely at a loss for words after the first song. I almost didn’t even want to clap for this piece of garbage. Annie Golden stands there before me and talks about her husband’s “doo doo ... read more brown” socks and how she just can’t handle it anymore with complete apathy on her face.
Or maybe I’m being too harsh. There are moments in Eartha’s performance that did shine out for me, however she’s on the stage so few and far between. Not to mention the plotline revolving around her was so unbelievable and thrown together that I didn’t even care what was going on.
I can’t believe Annie passed up playing another gig to work in this . The music was all wrong, the book was almost non-existent, the acting was very vapid. I wanted to leave in the middle of act one but kept telling myself it couldn’t get any worse.
It’s a guy in a doo rag pretending to be Ernest Hemingway while rolling around props that resemble household objects for two hours. Sound fun to you? |

| this musical is about finding your courage and discovering who you are. it's about self reflection and self growth. miriam learns a lot about herself from the people she meets in paris---especially from Mme. vallet and claude. claude is my favorite character; bob dusold (the actor who plays claude) pulls off this character quite convincingly. this adult fable will make more of a connection with people in their 40s and older; i'm 30 and ... read more although i didn't understand all of it, i saw it four times so i was really able to analyze it. it will probably connect more with women than men, but what the heck---seeing eartha kitt makes it all worth while! |

| I loved Mimi Le Duck. It is a quirky, off the wall comedy that should not be taken too seriously and you should attend being ready to laugh. The songs are great and you will find yourself humming them the next day. The cast is incredibly talented and Annie Golden has an amazing voice. I was moved seeing Eartha sing "Everything Changes." This is a fun light hearted show that I would recommend to everyone especially the 40+ crowd. |

| I really liked it - it's weird but in a good way. It's definitely something you will never see anywhere else! Plus the entire cast is over 40 (two are 80!) and I think it's refreshing to see a show that celebrates people of all ages, and not just bouncy twenty-somethings singing pop tunes. Not only that, but the stars look GREAT! And of course Eartha Kitt brings the house down. |

I had the grand opportunity of catching an evening performance of MIMI le DUCK on October the 25th, treating my mother and her boyfriend. Now, before I even knew anything about the show, I *knew* that I wanted to see this production, without question. Be it the selling point of seeing Eartha Kitt live and in-person, or the fact taht I knew it was going to be something fresh, comedic, exciting, and all-around enjoyable, I went for teh tickets ... read more and TA-DA! Let me tell you, folks, this show is surely something to see! Sure, the story's a tad bit wonky, but that's the whole idea!
The selling point isn't the 'emotional intensity' and isn't the twists and turns of plot (though, surprisingly enough, there are a good amount throughout). The true selling point is the superb chemistry of the eight-person cast, the beauty of Brian Feinstein's orchestrations, and cleverness of Diana-Hansen-Young's book and oh-so-witty lyrics. I was one of the lucky 9,000 to receive a promotioanl demo cd feauting 4 tracks from the show...Needless to say, I CANNOT stop listening, humming, strumming, drumming, tapping and knee-slapping along with this tuner! Featuring songs like: "My Mother Always Said", "A Thousand Hands", "Don't Ask", "It's All About", "Is There Room" and the awe-inspiring ballad, "THe Garden is Green" (performed BEAUTIFULLY by the stunningly, ever-so-enchanting, Annie Golden in the show), one cannot leave the theatre feeling a sense of joy and rapture.
If you're down in the dumps, or just looking for a SMART way to spent soem moolah, please, please, please, put some bucks down towadrs this Off Broadway gem. New World Stages is putting up some high-quality shows this coming season, and the highlight of it all is this show...I kid you not. Find YOUR green flash and see this production.. I'll leave you with this to ponder:
