"Middletown" Is a Must-See For Inventive Theatre Lovers Review by: Beverly, Dec 1, 2010 |
| "Middletown" is an exceptional bit of theatre considering it's about ordinary people in a small town. Wilder's "Our Town" came to mind while watching it, but Will Eno's story is more modern with its inclusion of an astronaut, some police brutality, and drug addiction. There are stand-out performances and a challenging script filled with metaphors and word play. The opening monologue is worth the price of admission. |

Great FIrst Half, Great Cast - See It as Experimental Theater Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Oct 31, 2010 |
| This play is very interesting for its unique angle on storytelling. It opens with the best welcome speech in recent memory - but later you realize that all the speeches are written in the same stream of consciousness style, with lots of run-on sentences that go no where, and that gets irritating - the characters all seem to have the same speech pattern. The first half of the play is the better half by far - it closes with an interesting take ... read more on what a theater audience expects, very original. But the second half is a confusing mess, and includes incorrect use of medical jargon (one example: you don't biopsy an infection, you take a culture), with not much reality from a medical point of view, and ultimately the second half makes no sense, to the point where the ending is just a stop in the action, it doesn't really come to a conclusion, a trend in theater that might make the writer feel satisfied, but not the audience. The cast are terrific, including Linus Roach, Heather Burns, Michael Jewett, and a cop who is truly frightening - but in the second half, you can see the actors working hard, with no real result. The second half goes beyond surreal to just plain mixed up, and never recovers. For the best experience, see the first half for good theater, and see the second half as an experiment that is not quite ready for prime time, and you will get the most out of the experience. Congratulations go to the cast for being so game to take on this script, and to the production staff, who change scenery with panache, and in some cases deserve billing for their performances rolling on scenery - Bravo! |
