Change and Inspiration Review by: , Jul 14, 2010 |
| I saw "Memphis" for a second time and will definitely see it again. I am encouraging my school district to bring the students to see this play. It is a history lesson on not just where "original rock and roll" came from but also from whom it derived. No disrespect to Elvis, but he was a by-product of that era. I encourage all the younger generation to see this wonderful musical and learn the lessons of change and inspiration. |

Really Worth it so Go! Review by: , Jun 28, 2010 |
Wow! there is nothing to say but Wow to describe Memphis. The story, the lyrics, the dancing, the costumes, the set, all were top class. The ending is uplifting, though the message is not as clear cut as I would have liked. But this musical will really ahve you dancing in your seats. I was so lucky to see this before the Tonys - i am sure it is harder to get a ticket now that they won so many awards. But really worth it!!!! The ... read more last number - "listen to the beat" or "Nananana" :)is the best! |

MEMPHIS SHOWS ME HOW THEATER IS SUPPOSED TO BE Review by: Sharon, Jun 14, 2010 |
| I've seen every Tony winner on Broadway and Memphis is my favorite by far. I've seen it three times and am going back tomorrow night for the fourth. Great original score. Great dancing. Energy from start to finish. Spectacular grand finale that makes the audience want to get up and dance. I'm so happy it won the Tony for Best Musical. I thought Chad Kimball was robbed of his Tony. I've never seen anyone put on a more moving,... read more, funny and totally entertaining performance. He created a versatile, amazing character you can't see enough of. To quote the title song with just a slight change, Memphis shows me how theater (this life) is supposed to be. |

very good but not great Review by: NedRacine, May 30, 2010 |
I found the lead Huey to be a very interesting character. His Memphis accent and peculiar mannerisms were a treat to watch. The lead woman Felicia also gave a strong performance especially with her singing. Still, I found that I liked the show more than I loved it. I was slow getting into it, and only as it went on did I find myself getting involved with the characters, at least at certain points. Nevertheless, this Musical can provide an ... read more enjoyable night out providing great singing, music, and dancing. if you want a nice time out with good music, great singing, and really fun dancing, this may be the ticket for you. |

Do NOT miss this one! Review by: ckd, May 9, 2010 |
| We did a New York weekend, seeing three shows in three nights, and this one was by far the best. We didn't really know what to expect, and it blew me away. There was never a dull moment and most of the songs had me tapping my feet the entire time. It was tough not to root for everyone to come out on top at the end. Performances were amazing and the music was dead on. SO much fun. One of my favorite broadway shows of all time, if not THE ... read more best. Tony nominations are well-deserved! |

Urrrghhhh Review by: poppins35, May 7, 2010 |
| I have walked into many of theatre and walk out of many of theatres. In recent years, I have walked into a theatre blown away at a production and I have walked out of theatres wondering when would I recoup the hours that I spent in theatre. Memphis was one of those productions where I walked out of highly disappointed. The plot line is trite and over done, the lead male reminded me of a former leader of a country, and the context was ... read more inaccurate. Memphis needs to return to Memphis and stay there. |

What an Experience! Review by: , Apr 19, 2010 |
| i walked into this little cutesy theatre not knowing what to expect...i was blown away. The Choreography was on point. Chad Kimball deserves his tony for his portrayal of the lovable Huey Calhoun....and Montego Glover is a star!...she also deserve a tony for playing felicia, a colored woman who faces obstacles including love and fame in the 1950's...Memphis will be around for a long time! |

You can't miss Memphis. Review by: Amel Zofia, Apr 11, 2010 |
I grew up on ABBA, so 'Momma Mia,' had always held a special place in my heart, even after seeing it more than half a dozen times. I also went to school during the 50's, and can readily appreciate the plot line of 'Memphis, the New Musical.' But take away the interesting integration conflict, and Memphis is a musical you don't want to miss. Expect energy personified by everyone in the cast, from the leads to the ensemble. Plan on ... read more seeing some interesting choreography, and listening to some outstanding voices. Throw in some humor, a myriad of characters who undergo personality changes, a rousing finale, and if it was a Wednesday or Saturday matinee, you might be tempted to run right out to the box office and pick up some tix for the evening performance. We always see a play for the first time by ourselves, then if we go to secondary and tertiary performances, we take friends, and/or family. No one has been disappointed yet. Bought the CD and play it in my car; allows me to visualize what I saw three times already with a fourth imminent. Hockadoo, Memphis, Hockadoo

Memphis rocked my world.... Review by: LoveBroadway, Apr 8, 2010 |
Would love, love, love to see Memphis again - amazing cast, set, music, dancing - performances. I couldn't find anything to criticize if I tried. I find it ironic that the musical is set in a time & place where African Americans and white Americans cannot marry - and now we are in a time & place where consenting gay couples in committed relationships cannot marry. Absolutely amazing show - I cannot say enough good things about it. ... read more I hope it wins a million Tony Awards! |

Marvelous Memphis Musical....! Review by: theater- goer, Apr 7, 2010 |
| I saw Memphis: A New Musical today. I heard it was good from a friend who saw it in the beginning of its run. Why did I wait so long to get there? It was marvelous! The lead actors were superb, the whole cast was terrific. The music was exhilarating and the energy very high. The story was good and told in a truthful manner. It was a great production. I highly recommend it. |

Great Fun and Very Politically Correct Review by: DoctorJoeE, Mar 28, 2010 |
Memphis is joyous, fun, energetic -- and very, very politically correct. Specifically, it's about black empowerment (yay!) and black exploitation (boo!), how the two seesawed against each other in the South during the '50s, and how talented black musicians were forced to embrace both in order to break into the big time. The plot is thin and predictable. White DJ likes black music (and a black woman) in the segregated 50's South, which is ... read more poorly received by both white racists and black musicians who think another white guy is trying to rip them off. Need I say more? Any real doubt how it will end? But musicals aren't about the plot, of course; they're about the music. And the music, written by David Bryan (of Bon Jovi fame), is pretty damned good. I just wish the whole thing weren't quite so formulaic; and that the director (Christopher Ashley) trusted his audience to figure out the empowerment/exploitation ironies for themselves, rather than spoonfeeding them to us. ("So you're going to New York to do what white people say. The network wanted me to white-ify my dancers and I stood up to them. When did I get blacker than you?") But the singing and dancing are electrifying; I doubt very much that anybody went home at intermission. I'm guessing (although so far I've found no confirmation) that the story is based on the life of Alan Freed, the Cleveland DJ who first turned white people on to black music, coined the name "rock and roll", and lost out nationally to Dick Clark and American Bandstand when he refused to compromise his principles by eliminating black performers from his TV show. So in summary, while Memphis is far from perfect, it's more fun than anything else on Broadway right now; and it's going to win all the musical-category Tonys come June. It deserves them; and besides, where is there any serious competition?
