I've seen and heard this before... Review by: luke, May 3, 2011 |
| I was surprisingly impressed with the talent of the cast of Memphis. However, the direction and the script of the show was far from worthy. Memphis the watered down offspring of Hairspray and Dream Girls and does not deliver the goods. I was pleased with the show at the end of the first act, but still, come the second act the story wrapped up too quickly and the change of time was not at all handled well. Plus the direction of the two main ... read more characters were nothing but comical. The two leads were cartoonish in their performance, acting only for the audience and not for the other members on the stage, ballads were far too overdone and not sincere, and the lines were robotic. If you are not a theatre goer, you will be amazed by the spectacle of singing and dancing because the cast is very talented. But if you enjoy acting and a true performance, watch Hairspray and Dream Girls back to back and you will be more than satisfied. |

| Memphis! wow! I just saw it a week ago. Fantastic! Ive seen over 40 hows and it is the best! Amazing! I took my daughter for her birthday and at intermission for probably 5 minutes of the intermission we set there looking at each other totally speechless. The Singing was Amazing! The Dancing was absolutely Fantastic! There was not one single weak link! The energy in Every single person was Wonderful! Even if someone had just a supporting ... read more role they were in the moment! they were Great! I would recommend this to everyone! It was Perfect! The show could not have been any better! Love Memphis Review by: , Mar 7, 2011 |
Just saw Memphis, absolutely loved it, didn't expect it to be so terrific. There is such high energy throughout the performance, it never lets down. Fabulous dancing, incredible singing, beautiful costumes, Montego Glover must have had more than 10 changes, each dress prettier than the previous. I laughed so hard during one of the scenes (don't want to spoil it if you haven't seen the show), this show has everything, laughter, crying, dancing,... read more, drama, singing not to mention a walk down memory lane.

Memphis: Broadways' answer to Prozac Review by: B'way Fan in NYC, Feb 15, 2011 |
Hands down, the most original and 'fantastical' show in NYC... Leads Chad Kimball and Montego Glover are exceptional and complimented by a superb cast. - Great story, high energy and overall, two hours of foot-tapping, head-shaking, hand-clapping, smile-on-your-face entertainment... See it! |

| On a recent trip to New York (my first) we were fortunate enough to see four Broadway productions. Memphis was hands down the best of the four we saw. It was powerful and filled with a great story line, fabulous dancing and incredible music. It was the only one I bought the cd for! I have already recommended it to several people. |

Fabulous music and choreography/annoying lead Review by: Suse, Jan 23, 2011 |
| We loved the rousing musical numbers. They energy and choreography was fantastic. The singing voices were unbelievable. The only negative I have to comment about is the annoying voice and mannerisms of the lead, Chad Kimball. To me he ruined what would have been a perfect musical theatre performance. Hard to believe that the diirector allowed him to be so obviously annoying. |

Lead actor's silly walk and annoying nasal dialect detract from otherwise great production. Review by: Baltasar D. Cruz, Jan 22, 2011 |
Of the Broadway shows that I have seen in recent years dealing with race (Hairspray, Ragtime, Race, and Memphis), this is by far the most entertaining. The sets were impressive, the story was compelling and intelligent, the music was lively, and the performers all sang beautifully. My only complaint is that the male lead (Chad Kimball, who plays fictional character Huey Calhoun) speaks with a ridiculous and highly annoying nasal twang when ... read more he is not singing (which he does exceptionally well) and walks around leaning backwards with his knees bent as if he wants to do a crab walk but can't quite reach the floor! When he is not singing, Mr. Kimball sounds and looks like someone doing a bad impression of Robin Williams' Popeye walking like one of the Festrunk brothers (the "wild and crazy guys" from Saturday Night Live in the 1970s). What is that all about? The rest of the cast play their parts intelligently and this is a superior show, but if Mr. Kimball would lose the annoying dialect and the Monty Pythonesque silly walk (of which the Ministry of Silly Walks would never have approved), this would be a much better show. |

Don't miss Memphis! Review by: Tammy, Dec 29, 2010 |
| This is an amazing show! The music, dancing acting, and storyline are fantastic. The Tony was well deserved. I laughed and cried. The entire cast was great, especially the two leads. What a wonderful way to wrap up our trip to the city. |

Funny, full of heart and great music Review by: , Dec 25, 2010 |
| Saw this on December 22 with my Aunt and 16 year old daughter- we all loved Memphis. It was a fantastic show and experience.I grew up with Broadway and although the story line was somewhat predictable this was one of the most engaging performances I've ever seen. I highly recommend this show. |

Meh.... Review by: anonymiss, Dec 24, 2010 |
| i liked the show, i sat in partial view for a lower price which was fine because you didnt miss much. the sound was terrible i kept wanting to turn the volume up on the music/songs and the volume DOWN on huey's annoying voice. he sounds like a drunk forest gump. the rest of the cast was phenomenal. i would give it 3/5 stars. my mother realllly enjoyed it so perhaps if you are a fan of this time in american history you are more inclined to give a ... read more higher rating. go see it if you can otherwise check out Fela while you are in town this season. |

One of the Best Shows I have ever seen Review by: Shane, Sep 30, 2010 |
| I have seen over 25 broadway shows including the all time favorites. I was skeptical about Memphis at first, thinking that it was all r&b and rock n roll and that really isnt my stlye at 25. From the moment the show started to the crowd roaring at the end which was the loudest i have ever heard, memphis did not have ONE dull moment. The singing was SPECTACULAR. it includes songs that make you laugh, songs that make you cry, and songs that make ... read more you FEEL. If i could give this show 10 starts i would. Bravo to Memphis |
