FANTASTIC show! Review by: Sam1019, May 13, 2013 |
| Phenomenal show. Staging, music, actors - just a wonderful day at the theater. This show should win every Tony award that it's nominated for. I don't say this for many shows but I'm willing to see it again. That's how much I enjoyed it! |

loved it and great for kids and teens Review by: Haleys mom, Apr 17, 2013 |
| I saw it in previews with my 15 year old daughter. We loved it and it had a lot of heart. But it had no "great" song that you will every remember after you hear it and it was sometimes hard to make out the words at all because the kids weren't always in sync. It is sweet and fun though and the energy and staging are fabulous. |

A Theatrical Hug for Matilda! Review by: deartheatergoer, Apr 10, 2013 |
| Saw Matilda and truly enjoyed the musical production. The creative direction throughout the play will bowl you over. Great set, lighting, and choreography too. The score was only serviceable ( ala Billy Eliott...Can't anyone write truly memorable show tunes that can stand alone and not just advance the story these days? ). However, the clever book stuck to Dahl's original story and didn't try to sanitize it, which was refreshing. ... read more Matilda's cast, especially the children, were strong and energetic. Particularly impressive was the male lead as Miss Trunchbull, Bertie Carvel, who gave a brilliant comic performance worthy of a Tony. In fact, this show will take a bundle of awards with it this Broadway season! GRADE: B+ |

Brilliant! Review by: Tomcat, Apr 3, 2013 |
I personally love this production and went to see it again the very next night. (Really I did). It has choreography by the amazing and award winning Peter Darling (of Billy Elliot the Musical and Movie fame). I thought the acting, set, dancing, and special effects were all great. I really liked the range of song styles, a few songs were somewhat mediocore, but most of the songs were very fun (the songs themselves really didn't stand out ... read more as much as the dancing that went with them). The cast is truly top notch, no weak members of the cast at all. I will say that this is an English Musical, with a good amount of British style humor and yes British accents. I loved Mary Poppins and Billy Elliot, so it should be no surprise that I would also enjoy Matilda as much as I do. If you are not a fan of British Musicals.. this one is most likely not going to change your mind. |

Get tickets while you can..... Review by: caffiend, Mar 19, 2013 |
| "Matilda" certainly lives up to the buzz - it's a great show! Refreshing to see a show with children it it that isn't cloyingly, Disney-sweet. It's fresh, snappy and smart. Oona Laurence was Matilda the night we saw it and was unbelievably good. All the kids were fantastic and other standout performances were Matilda's parents - hilarious - and of course, Bertie Carvel, who stole the show as Miss Trunchbull. While none of the songs will ... read more go on to become "standards" outside of the show, they were catchy, fun and fit the story - and I still have a couple of them stuck in my head days later. The choreography was inventive and clever. Go see Matilda for a fun and memorable night - before tickets are even harder to get!! |

Entertaining production slightly spolied by it's score Review by: rskblueyes, Mar 16, 2013 |
I saw this the first week of previews. I think this is the one production I really looked forward to as it's been touted as the best West End musical in years. On most counts the show lives up to it's hype. The story is based on Roald Dahl childrens book. I must say the book of the show was well written capturing the essence of Dahl's other works. Although based on a child lit, this isnt lost on the adults, the book ... read more is intelligent and very funny. The performances were all wonderfull especially Matilda's clueless and mean parents, they were a hoot. The young girl playing Matilda my night was excellent with a wonderfull voice and stage presence. Of course Bernie Carvill stole the show as Miss Trunchball, he was a hoot, his delivery me of Harriet Harris in drag. The staging and sets were all first notch. Now for the bad: The score was very weak, nothing but the opening number was remotely memorable. Too make matters even worse, most of the songs sung by the young children when singing in a group were not understandable due to their "english" accents. Im hoping that this in time will not be an issue and will be fixed by opening. I think this is a show that kids and adults will like very much.

The audience loved it Review by: gngal, Mar 15, 2013 |
Yes, the audience really enjoyed this show but I was not entirely thrilled. The theme, a little girl who finds imaginative ways to fight back against her mean unfair parents and schoolmaster was almost sadistic - the language was just too cruel for my taste. Putting that aside, the kids in the cast are adorable and amazingly talented but sometimes hard to understand acoustically. There are also lots of energetic songs,... read more, dance numbers and great production displays. All in all, a cute show but with mixed bag moments. Be advised that the seats in this theater are punishingly cramped. Try to lose a few pounds before you go. |
