Why does everyone give this show a bad impression?!?! Review by: Disney4ever, May 31, 2010 |
I can't believe there are people panning this show terribly. They did NOT change the stoyline! Haven't you heard that Mary Poppins was a book WAY before it was a film??Haven't you heard that the original Mary Poppins was cold and stern and not everything was sugary? Buy the books off amazon, read them and you may be in for a surprise but that's what this show is based on! There were statues that came alive, their toys came alive,... read more, the animals talked etc. This is just taking out some of the darker moments from Mary Poppins. I howver loved the show. Now I read the books before I saw it, so I knew they would change it a bit. I love the movie and that was based off the books as well but not entirely. They spiced it up to make it more appropriate for children. I WAS very glad that they didn't take out Step In Time, because that is my favourite song in the entire film. Could have paced it up, but overall I loved it. |

I didn't like the Show as much as I did the Movie Review by: DisneyLover, Apr 17, 2010 |
| I just saw the show last night for its 8pm Friday Night showing. It was a full house!! I am a huge fan of Disney and Mary Poppins, but in my own personal opinion I did not enjoy the show as much as I thought I would. I found myself bored at a few scenes. I was upset that they left out so many wonderful parts that I enjoy and remembered most in the movie (like the park scene with the penguins, the colored carousel of horses, etc) I found myself ... read more confused with all the new characters and new storylines. I felt disconnected from Mary Poppins. The show seemed to concentrate more on the family and their troubles. I know some people might enjoy all the new twists, but I guess I am just not one of them! I think I would have enjoyed Lion King Better. |

Very Enjoyable Review by: Watcher, Apr 17, 2010 |
| I saw the show with two adult friends (not a kid amongst us) and we all thought it was enjoyable, well done and a lot of fun. I think it's great even if you don't have kids with you, as evidenced by the audience of all ages. And I wonder if it's possible for posters like CandyGirl to give us their opinion without calling those who disagree with them "idiots". |

Answer to Peggy's Question Review by: NYSteve, Mar 27, 2010 |
| When I saw the show, there were tons of kids and they were all enthralled by the show. I was surprised that they were quiet for a 2 1/2 hour show. I didn't hear a SOUND and all the kids around me were totally mesmerized. That being said, I think the show is too long and some parts too scary for a 3 year old. The 5 year old would probably like it better, but I think it still might be long for that age. Most of the kids I saw at the performance ... read more I attended were more in the 7+ range. You might be better off taking them to a totally kid-friendly and interactive show off-Broadway such as Fuerza Bruta or the Gazillion Bubble Show. Hope this helps. |

Couldn't be better! Review by: Dianne, Mar 26, 2010 |
| Amazing!!! Saw it Feb. 27th with Sam as Bert, Laura as Mary, and they couldn't be better. Well performed, I enjoyed how the music was professionally sung, where as other shows I saw, I wasn't all that impressed with singing. You won't be disappointed and the stage effects are nonstop. Unsure about a show to see? See this, you WON'T be disappointed. |

Ignore the bad reviews, they're wrong, this is MAGIC Review by: CandyMagic, Mar 26, 2010 |
I know there has been a warning of threatening others, but I really had to let this out. The people who are haters of this show and say that if you love the movie you should not see this, completely ignore them. They are idiots and have no idea what they're talking about. This show got hundreds of rave reviews and even critics claimed it was better than the movie itself. The reason why it might be different is because it is based ... read more on the books by PL Travers, the original Mary Poppins stories, not entirely based on the film. PL Travers wanted more depth added to Mary Poppins since that she wasn't too pleased about the sugary sweetness that Disney always provides. To those who complained because it wasn't like the movie, I have advice for you. READ THE BOOKS. THEN you'll know why it's different. To get on with the show, Mary Poppins has always been one of my favourite classic films and this show really brought the magic to life! Bert walking upside down on the ceiling during Step in Time and Mary flying out into the audience was AMAZING!! I will have to warn you, there ARE a few scary scenes in this - follow up of Mary Poppins Comes Back story. Temper Temper where the toys come to life and threaten Jane and Michael, not badly but to serve them right. Also brimstone and Treacle, another dark sequence with a horrible nanny who takes place after Mary Poppins had left the Banks home and some parts of the park scene are a bit disturbing as well. Tne only slight disappointment was that Supercal was slowed down and so was Step in Time, hopefully they'll pace that up. In general, this show must be seen by everyone. A great classic reccommended!

Review by: Peggy, Mar 26, 2010 |
This is not a review but a question. Is this play appropriate for a 3 and 5 year old?? Would it be too long for them to sit? They are well behaved but have not been exposed to something like this. Except if you count Blue's Clues on stage. Thanks for your opinion Peggy |

Fly to Mary and she will fly to you !!!!!! Review by: Diract 66, Mar 3, 2010 |
| See this show before it closes. It appears to me that with have empty orchestra seats, its time may have come. There are discounts now! If you can sit in the orchestra, do so. Confetti on your head, Mary flies, and excellent view of sets and dancing. This show is not the movie, and it should not be. Yes, there is a darker story theme throughout, but it makes it a better musical. Children in my seating area still enjoyed the live show. There ... read more is one show stopping tap dance number that goes on with the entire cast that will make you glad you came to see. The use of the house as a set was amazing, lowering into the upstairs room, and also the roof, as well as creatively going into the basement kitchen. The three big songs from the movie are in the musical and the new songs are also appropriate for the show. Big cast, big orchestra, big dance numbers, expert lighting effects will put stars in your eyes. Mary Poppins( Laura Michelle Kelly) beautiful singing voice! By the way, this theatre's interior is the most impressive beautiful classic recreation on Broadway!!!!!! |

Really Enjoyed It Review by: NYNative, Feb 23, 2010 |
I went with two friends to see the show (the three of us are 40+ and had no kids with us) and we all had a great time-choreography was wonderful, performances were excellent and the production was very creative. If you want to see a re-creation of the movie, rent the DVD and save yourself $100 for a theatre ticket. I'm not sure why people would go to the theatre just to see an exact replica of the movie, anyway. Take your kids or ... read more take yourself-you'll have a great time. By the way, even though we went on a Sat night, there were plenty of kids in the audience, and I didn't hear a peep out of any of them. I could see the kids sitting near us, and they were totally enthralled. And there were plenty of adults like us without kids! |

Practically Perfect In EVERY Way Review by: MPhillips, Feb 22, 2010 |
This show was AMAZING - perhaps the best musical I have ever seen on Broadway. The people on this site complaining that the musical is not like the movie are correct - it is much, much better - songs have been enhanced (by the original Sherman Brothers and some new colleagues, so the original Sherman touch only betters the movie version). The acting was superb by all (even the little kids, who are usually annoying, were excellent). Burt, ... read more the cook, the father were all very strong and the clarity of Mary Poppins herself was superb. If I compare another Sherman scored movie to Musical (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) Mary Poppins beats it on all fronts - stronger cast, stronger musical reworks. CCBB was a letdown but Mary Poppins the Musical is just practically perfect in every way. |

Terrifically Entertaining Review by: Redeye, Feb 7, 2010 |
| This is not a show that needs LONG analytical reviews (like some below) like it's some sort of Greek tragedy. It's a musical comedy--fun, enjoyable, with great dancing, terrific performances and a treat for the entire family. Who cares if it's not the same as the movie? It's NOT the movie. And if people sit there analyzing every single nuance, and why this is good, and why this didn't work, etc. etc. of course you're not going to enjoy the ... read more entire spectacle. Save the dissertations for school and let yourself enjoy the show. |

Review by: Ellis, Feb 6, 2010 |
| If you're looking for a sure thing, this show is one of the most lush shows on Broadway - a large cast, amazing sets and effects, a full beautiful orchestra, and its loads of fun! While it will certainly entertain kids, adults will love this musical. |
