A depressing take-off of Les Mis. Review by: OperaLover, Sep 16, 2007 |
This show should have been a play or a musical at best, not an Opera. Very repetitive and boring, the voices not beautiful enough for an Opera. Disturbing flow to what could have been a well played out drama. Half the audience left at intermission.
The soulful songs weren't strong enough to believe their misery, and all the slavery song lyrics were very reminiscent of Les Mis...save yourself time and money, and see Les Mis instead! |

Review by: Njeri Akua, Sep 12, 2007 |
When I went to see Margaret Garner, it was the first dress through run and I was advise that the music might be a challenge for me. However, knowing the writings of Toni Morrision, I thought the flats and sharps of the music was so apprepo. For the impact of the story to have the full effect and for the message to come across to the audience, the music along with the super titles played most important roles.
I really enjoyed it. The ... read more spirit (at the end) of Margaret's suspended type walk amongst her people after her death was a great visual and replica.
It was well put together. My advice would be to understand the writings of Toni Morrison and you will appreciate this particular production as I did. Thank 'U' |
