A TOUCHDOWN Review by: Ron, Dec 10, 2010 |
| VINCE IS ALIVE AND WELL ON BROADWAY. Lombardi is a must see. Dan Lauria is outstanding in his portrayal of V.L. Judith Light is also excellent as Mrs. L. The supporting cast also does a fine job. You don't have to love football to enjoy it. My wife admitted after the show she was pleaantly surprised and enjoyed it more than she expected to. This happens to be a great theatre as there are no bad seats. Nothing is too far from the stage. |

Not just for football fans. Fun show. Review by: Lynn, Dec 10, 2010 |
The reviewers in the NY papers said that this was a play for women to take their football loving husbands to. In as much as that is an accurate statement there is much more to be said. I do not care for football but I found this play entertaining and fun. I laughed a lot. The actors are all wonderful and the theater is very intimate so all of the seats are good. |

Does not disappoint - A must see for anyone who loves football or not!! Review by: mq, Dec 5, 2010 |
| We purchased the as a last minute "whim" - We were not disappointed. Maybe it was the storyline, the talented cast "of characters", the intimacy of the Circle in the Round theater, but the story pulled you in and brought you back to a very touching time in the Lombardi's life. |

Great story, Great actors Review by: ALAN, Dec 1, 2010 |
| Great show. Many funny interjections to lighten up the mood. Lombardi was played perfectly, almost thought it was him. Great theater, sat in the front row center. More of a play displaying human emotions than a football story. Great show, hightly recommended. |

Not just for men ... Review by: Beeper, Nov 18, 2010 |
| I thought this was going to be all about football which is a sport that I do enhoy as a woman but to my surprise it was much more than that. It is a story about love, committment and inspiration. I truly enjoyed this play and would highly reccommend it to any and all. |

Lombardi is alright Review by: Brenda, Nov 8, 2010 |
There are enough gratifying aspects to Lombardi to make it 90 minutes well spent. The (very thin) play by Eric Simonson, is based on a biography. I don't know enough about sport to comment on the accuracy of the football history. (Let's be frank, what I know of sport I learned from Damn Yankees.) There are beautiful moments in this play that are by no means the result of Thomas Kail's (In The Heights, Brokeology) direction. Having now ... read more seen Lombardi and Brokeology I am left believing that Mr. Kail is adept at knowing his audience and creating a format that will appease. What he is not necessarily skilled at is helping his actors connect resulting in a complete lack of dramatic tension. But he does know his audience. This production, at Circle in The Square, is filled with lighting cues, videos and sound effects. But what a joy to see theatre in the round! While one of the actors (Keith Knobbs) seemed to have a bubble over his head reading "pivot, pivot, pivot," most of the actors seemed entirely comfortable in the venue. Theatre in the round can be such a wonderful method of drawing the audience into the experience, and I do believe the format helped this production a great deal. It is difficult to asses performances when there simply isn't that much with which to work, but there was one clear stand-out. Judith Light plays Vince Lombardi's wife Marie and steals the show (I would use a football metaphor, but who are we kidding.) Ms Light while known predominately for her soap opera and sitcom work, is a very accomplished stage actress (Wit.) She owns the stage for every moment she is on. She manages to do so without any cheap tricks (which would be simply disastrous in such a small venue) but by the sheer force of her embodiment of her character. Dan Lauria plays her husband Vince, and from what people tell me, Mr. Lombardi was ferocious? I wouldn't know that from Mr. Lauria's performance. He was likable enough (which is probably not helpful for this role) but the stage is clearly not his home. I have decided that he was saving his voice (I saw a matinee) and I have no issue with that, however, he seemed to also be relying on his voice to do all the work for him. That can be a problem. Even so, how wonderful to see an un-miked play!! I was almost dizzy listening to sound actually change as actors moved! How novel. How wonderful. The size and style of the theatre, and the lack of amplification was joyous enough for this reviewer, but added into the equation was the fact that the majority of the audience were first time theatre goers. Now, this might have been the ONLY time they were to venture into a theatre, but that's okay too. Much has been made of the website tutorials that existed for Lombardi fans ("it is customary to applaud for performances that please you.") but I say "hurray." Come to the theatre to see the football memorabilia in the lobby. Take photos of yourselves (in football regalia) next to full size Lombardi photos. Flip through the Playbill declaring, "I'd see the Blue Man Group in anything." Come one, come all. There is a whole lot of things theatre should be (affordable, magical, etc.) but what it should never be is elitist. The only downside to this "theatre for beginners" phenomenon was the high school class sitting behind me (who arrived 15 minutes late.) Their behavior would have appalled you. When the curtain calls concluded, and the house lights came up, I dear reader, had my own curtain speech to give. Please picture if you will, my 5 foot 7 self looming over slumping sitting sullen teenagers. Ahem. "I've listened to you for 90 minutes, now you are going to listen to me. This is not your living room, this is a theatre, and that is not YouTube it is a play. Those are real people down there performing. They deserve your respect and you will give it to them." I think I lifted some of that from Herbie's speech to the stage manager in Witchita's only burlesque theatre. |

Review by: , Nov 4, 2010 |
| The prior reviewer ("Legs") said it all for me. Hubby and I went because he's an avid football fan and I have recently become one too. But the performances are all (only 5 in cast) so amazing, so real, so raw, that you needn't know much about the man or the game. It was really about life. And after the show, we were lucky to participate in a "talk-back". They had an author and a former Giants player that took questions from the audience - ... read more and the cast came and sat down with us and took questions too. So great. I hope it lasts a long time. |

You Don't Need to Know Football to Love It Review by: Legs, Oct 31, 2010 |
| Great performances in an interesting story about a fascinating man! One need not know anything about football to flip for this production. Dan Lauria is excellent and Judith Light must receive a Tony nomination or the world has gone mad. This was about the fastest ninety minutes in the theater, ever; it is that entertaining. As always, a great play at Circle in the Square is a special treat. |

Review by: JohnnyM, Oct 12, 2010 |
This was enjoyable. Dan Lauria did a great job as Lombardi, he gets intense at times but also had plenty of humorous moments, in fact there was more humor in this play that I expected -and that made it more enjoyable. I was originally not so sure Lauria would be able to to do this convincingly , but he was able to capture much of Lombardi's persona. And I learned it's not so much about being totally convinced he's Lombardi as it is for him ... read more to be a very good representation of Lombardi and he did that very well. Lauria really put on a performance. Judith Light was a pro, she really was great as his wife and helped tell Lombardi's story from her perspective. It's a small cast, but the production left you with a better understanding of the legend, Vince Lombardi. |

Great story from the land of the Cheeseheads!! Go-Pack!!!! Review by: Pack-O-Cheese!, Sep 29, 2010 |
| If you want a story that makes you want to be all you can be, THIS IS IT! Great acting brings to life this story of a man we Wisconsinites love to this day. Certain people and events give birth to that sense of pride and honor. This story did it for me. Made me real proud to be a Cheesehead!! |
