Worth the Price for Angela Lansbury Alone Review by: DoctorJoeE, Feb 8, 2010 |
So here's the thing: The three principals, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angela Lansbury, and Alexander Hanson, are excellent. It's worth the ticket price just to see Lansbury. But as is often the case with Sondheim musicals, the first act features unmemorable music and a glacial pace. The second act is actually amusing, picks up the pace considerably, and finally grabs you with the signature number, "Send in the Clowns." (If you're wondering ... read more whether Zeta-Jones can carry a tune, the answer is yes, quite well, thank you.) The production is basically a modern opera -- even the title is operatic (a direct translation of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik) -- and as such, the plot is ludicrous. So don't expect it to go anywhere other than where it very predictably seems to be going. The acting is fine. Lansbury has a relatively minor part, but as always, steals the show. Ramona Mallory expends a great deal of energy attempting to show us what a good actress she is. (Memo to Ramona: more careful diction, less screaming, and give decaf a try.) Watch for Leigh Ann Larkin as the lascivious maid, who sings an excellent rendition of "The Miller's Son." She could be a star rather soon. In summary, if you can survive the first act, you'll love the second; and you'll come away with fond memories of Angela Lansbury. |

'Night Music' is superb musical theatre Review by: katehepCOCO, Jan 25, 2010 |
'A Little Night Music' is one of the great works of American musical theatre. The current production isn't so lavish. I found Zeta-Jones quite good--as are all theother principals. The faultless Angela Lansbury is even more compelling than her usual brilliance. By far, she's the best Mme. Armfeldt I've seen. The list includes Ms. Gingold, Margaret Hamilton, Claire Bloom, Lila Kedrova & Sian Phillips. |

See the Production for Great Acting in a Not-So-Great Play Review by: Carol, Jan 20, 2010 |
| Catherine Zeta-Jones is the rare actor who can go seamlessly from film to stage. She is absolutely radiant as Desiree, and especially believable except when she tries to sing "Bring in the Clowns," the signature song of the production. Angela Lansbury at 84 is delicious. She has the best lines in the play, and the audience raved every time she appeared on stage. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening. |
