Classic Disney cartoon comes to life with all your favorite songs and characters! Review by: seasam114, Dec 17, 2008 |
| This was great. All of your favorite songs and a few more exclusive ones to move the story along made this a very memorable show. I sang and danced along in my chair with all the songs. Fantastic performances by the main characters. I would definitely see this again and would highly recommend it, even to guys like me who didn't want to see a "girly show" like this. |

I wanted to not be a part of Ariel's World Review by: Shyxlilfox, Dec 12, 2008 |
Musically, the Little Mermaid has always been strong thanks to Disney's genius. Music can translate well (except for the newly added pieces), the rest of the show, however, was just torture to sit through. The storyline was very diluted from the actual movie. It definitely left me wanting more. The cast tries hard to make their sea-faring adventures seem realistic. However, the heelies, fins, and swimming-arm-movements created ... read more more of a distraction than anything else. It was next to impossible to block out reality and immerse yourself in the show when all you can think about was how difficult it must be to sing, act, dance, and roll around. The lead playing Ariel was trying very hard to be the young, earnest, mermaid... but it got very annoying after awhile. King Triton was also horribly cast; his voice was too weak to play the patriarch of the seas. Sebastian was also annoying, and I think Ursula was phoning it in. The only highlights were the Chef singing Les Poissons, and the two electric eels. The children in the audience, however, seemed completely thrilled by this musical. So if you're looking to entertain the kids, knock yourself out and support Broadway. Otherwise, spend it elsewhere. |

| The Little Mermaid was a childhood favorite of mine. I went on a mother daughter trip with my school, I enjoyed it, but I would not go back again. I recommend this musical for families with younger children. I'm not saying seniors and adults shouldn't though. Go and experience it yourself and I hope you have fun! |

Wonderful production for kids and big kids! Review by: Amalthea, Nov 6, 2008 |
My mum, sister and I came to New York from the UK for a few days and were determined to watch a Broadway show. The Little Mermaid is my favourite Disney film so I was particularly excited. I should add that it was my favourite film the first time round - I'm 26 and my sister's 24! I loved every minute of the production, although I agree with some other reviewers that I'd rather they hadn't changed the ending with Ursula/Vanessa,... read more, but otherwise it was perfect. We had the understudy Ariel who did magnificently although her voice wasn't quite as pure as the original film voice-actress. However, we thought Ursula was spectacular with the most astounding voice I've heard in a theatrical production for a long time. I got to the point where I was constantly hoping she'd appear so I could hear more! Flotsam and Jetsam were hilarious and a brilliant partnership and Scuttle and his seagulls were equally amusing. I liked the additional songs although none were particularly memorable - this was perhaps a slight weakness compared to other Disney Brodaway/West End productions (Beauty and the Beast and the Lion King in particular) where some new songs were as good as the originals. However, the sets and costumes in this production were the best I've seen in a Disney musical - the Heeley's were a brainwave and the mermaids' tails were brilliant! The sea/land transistions were completely believable and I thought it did the setting great justice. There were a huge number of children in the audience, but they seemed extremely well behaved and were clearly riveted, as was I! Despite the competition from some of the best shops and sights in the world, The Little Mermaid was the highlight of my trip to New York and I can't wait until it comes to London so I can see it again! |

Definitely a thumbs up! Review by: Under the Sea, Oct 31, 2008 |
I really enjoyed the Little Mermaid, even though I am 28. But I remembered the movie from when I was a little girl. (I think everyone who grew up in the 90's has a soft place for it in their hearts). I paid the full price for an orchestra seat because it was on a Saturday night. I think if I went again I would look for a discount though. For those buying tickets, be aware that the balcony in this theater is very big - covering almost ... read more 2/3 of the orchestra, overhanging orchestra row L or K. So if you have a choice between the balcony seats and back of the orchestra - I would definitely consider balcony over the back of the orchestra since your view is a little blocked. The sets are very well made in a part realistic/part abstract way, like they usually do in the Disney shows, for example, some fish are more costume-developed than others. The story has been simplified, without the subplot about the Ursula character becoming a girl and using Ariel's voice to win the prince's love. I was kind of disappointed about this, even though I am sure it is better for the kids, it kind of made the show a bit too simplistic for me. But itwas a great experience and I would really recommend it. After the show I had a thought that Ariel's wish to become something she is not is a little dated. I think today the trend is to write stories in which the person rediscovers his roots and discovers he is proud of who he is and where he came from, like in "In the Heights". If "Little Mermaid" was written today - perhaps it would be written with the Prince becoming a merman....... |

VERRRY DISNEY !! Review by: Javy, Oct 11, 2008 |
Saw the Little Mermaid and I would have to say that Disney will always cater to the imagination of Adults and the Imagery of kids. The plot is the same plot as the movie. The Characters sing but they don't entertain, move but don't dance. The set is very movable , as in May Poppins, and Beauty and the Beast. The Scenery is very captivating, and if you have kids under 12 this would be a wonderful day of going to Toys - R - Us , Little Mermaid, ... read more and a Quick Meal. Go for the Discount, and if you can try the Matinee. |

Music, no drama. Review by: Chipwich, Oct 7, 2008 |
| The music was great but the acting was kind of weak. The king triton wasn't very powerful as a king should be and the final battle between ariel and ursula was terrible. Just because the show is aimed at kids doesn't mean you can ignore the acting aspect of musical theatre and focus only on the "showstopper" musical number. |

Go, but not to a matinee Review by: abbyjt, Aug 31, 2008 |
| This was a wonderful show. My husband and I bought the tickets several months ago and took our kids ages 10, 11 and 14. We all loved it. The only problem was, we saw a matinee. People brought very young children to this show and lots of them. 5 or 6 is really the youngest that should be brought to a broadway show. All the babies, toddlers and very young kids talked and cried throughout the show. I never heard a parent ... read more tell their child not to talk. Also, there was lots of walking up and down the aisle. So definitely go, but go at night. |

Good Review by: DoReSammi, Aug 16, 2008 |
| This was a lot better than I thought it would be. The singing was all very good, the scenic design was amazing, and I met the cast after the show and they were all really nice people. A good experience, but not an INCREDIBLE show. |

Fabulous! As good as Beauty & the Beast! Don't miss it! Review by: TexasTammy, Aug 13, 2008 |
| My husband and I took our two daughters age 10 and 11 last night. Bought last minute tickets and couldn't sit by each other, but who cares. This was incredible! I didn't think anything could be as bright flashy and fabulous as Beauty & the Beast, but this totally was. The whole audience seemed completely enthralled. Don't miss this show whether you have kids or not. Great special effects, great costumes, great lights, great music and ... read more dancing. Loved everything |

It was OKAY Review by: , Aug 1, 2008 |
The Little Mermaid Broadway Show was a very exciting broadway show. I think the acting was great. The whole cast did a great job on their parts. Suprisingly, my little sister didn't fall asleep during the show like she would do on many other shows. However, I didn't like how they changed the story and took out lots of the important parts. I would probably come back do watch the show again because it was very fun and funny. |

Everyone can enjoy Disney's magical new musical! Review by: , Jul 31, 2008 |
I just saw this yesterday, and I enjoyed it thoroughly! The music is fun, the sets are breathtaking, the acting was flawless, and the singing was fantastic! Sierra Boggess portrayed Ariel perfectly, capturing her innocence and headstrong behavior. Her facial expressions were outstanding, and her singing was pitch perfect. Sherie Rene Scott does not disappoint as Ursula. Her comedic timing is right on the mark and her voice is incredible. She's a ... read more lot of fun to watch. Norm Lewis was great as King Triton and has an amazing voice. He completely becomes his character on stage. Titus Burgess made a great Sebastian with his great accent and voice. Trevor Braun was adorable as Flounder (but he only does the matinees). Everyone was perfectly casted! The important thing for people to remember about this show is that it's Disney. It's for kids, so the story does not have a lot of depth to it and moves quickly so as to keep the kids' attention. Also, it's a musical that takes place under water half of the show, and they do not use a lot of wire work and no water at all. It's all based on visuals and the imagination (and you do need a little bit of one for this show). However, I think that this is a production that the whole family can and will enjoy! |

VERY UPSETTING Review by: , Jul 10, 2008 |
Being that I was a huge little mermaid fan I must say, I was extremely disappointed!! I, as well, have never left a broadway musical disappointed. The girl casted as Ariel did a good job...Sebastian was fantastic! King Triton's voice was too young to play the part. They completely deleted the most important scene when Eric gets hypnotized by Ursula and gets married to the pretty Ursula just because of her voice. Also, how do you ... read more delete the scene where Ariel tried to ruin Eric's wedding. Also, when Eric and Ariel are about to kiss on the boat...instead of tipping it over like it was in the movie, they changed it and had the eels zap the boat with lightening. They shouldn't have been able to change scenes according to their liking. They could have taken out other unecessary scenes and put in the most important ones.
Plus the lady playing Ursula, although good, was wrong for this character. In the movie Ursula is fat with a raspy, scary, witchy voice! The woman they casted was super skinny and had a soft, delicate beautiful voice! SOOOOOOOOOO DISAPPOINTED!!!

AWESOME Review by: Chris, Jul 8, 2008 |
I saw the show back during Eater time and thought the entire production was awesome. Seirra Bogges is a perfect Ariel at 10! One of the people that stole the show for me was Ursula. She has this really strong and powerful voices that is pefect for the part. I liked her more then the movie ursula cause she actually sings Poor Unfortunate Souls instead talking it threw the song. I don't think this show could of bin put together any better. I ... read more even ejoyed the new songs brought to the story. Im takinging my friend to see it in 2 weeks we have Row C seats and last time I had W this is gonna be a great expierence! |

Falling Short of Expectations Review by: kay9386, Jul 7, 2008 |
| I saw the show yesterday and I couldn't help but be a bit disappointed. I've never before left a Broadway show feeling like something was missing. I sat in the Orchestra so I had excellent seats, yet the cast was not all that I had hoped for. Ariel was excellent. She looked the part and was a good actor. I was also surprised by how well Flounder's character was. The addition of using a young boy for the character was very good. However,... read more, I was very disappointed with Ursala and King Triton's characters. King Triton did not have the right voice or look for the part. I was expecting someone bigger and more tough, and he wasn't at all. When he was supposed to seem stern or angry his acting was completely off and unbelievable. Ursala was made to play such a big role in the play but her voice was not strong enough at all. She needs a big powerful voice, and this was not the case at all. It almost seemed as if the actress wasn't even trying. Her costume was also not as impressive as it could be. Just a dress with tentacles attacked that she had to pick up to move. Not very believable. Even Eric could have had a bigger, more powerful voice. The show had a lot of potential to be great, yet the casting caused it to fall short. Also I would definetly reccomend that very young children do not attend. There was so much talking and conversation going on from younger children who weren't old enough to understand what was happening. It ruined the experience for people who were trying to listen and enjoy the show they spent so much money to see. |
