Do not see unless you've seen every other Broadway show. Review by: JoeB9288, Aug 10, 2009 |
| Aweful show. I'm an avid theatre goer and took my 2 girls 7 and 9 yrs old. Though they enjoyed it I found the story lacked substance and "umph".Music was ok and aside from Ariel and Sebastian whose acting was excellent, the storyline just didn't have a smooth flow to it. Though the scenery is great, there's just something missing about this show that I can't put my finger on. The ONLY reason I enjoyed it was because my kids did but other ... read more than that a total waste of money. We saw Mary Poppins and Wicked on same trip and those 2 blow away Little Mermaid. Good thing this show is closing Aug 30! |

Disney could've done better, take your kids to Shrek the Muscial instead! Review by: , Jun 2, 2009 |
| Honestly, Disney could've done a better job with this show. I had high hopes for it since it was replacing "Beauty & the Beast" which was an amazing musical, but I was disappointed. The music is good obviously because the writers from the movie did it and the actors did a fine job, but the production it self is a mess. Remeber Ariel's Grotto in the movie being big and full of treasure; well in this show it's nothing more than a big set piece ... read more with things attached to it that don't look like human things. The costumes are downright bad. Flounder wears nothing more than a yellow t-shirt and shorts, and Prince Eric's maids have huge cotton balls around their waists making them look like chickens. The book is also not written very well. I'd take you kids to Shrek the musical instead. It's much more professional and more efoort is put into it. It makes sence that this show did not get many Award nomiantions. |

I gave the show as a gift, my gift in return were the children's smiles. So worth it!!! Review by: mermaidfan, May 29, 2009 |
| It was a nostalgic experience for me so I loved it but agree with some fans that there were vital pieces from the movie missing. It is a rendition after all and mostly, very similar. Mainly, the tickets were a gift for my 5 y/o god daughter, her 7 y/o sister, and their parents who recently lost their job with this failing economy so they really appreciated it and they sooo LOVED it!! We had great orchestra seats for the full effect. I just ... read more adored Sierra, ARIEL, who was so believable and her voice was soo beautiful! Kudos to the casting! Also, if your kids aren't exhausted afterwards, make some time to wait for the stars of the show to come out and sign your playbills. It's quite exciting and I loved "King Triton" who was so smiley and kind to the kids, even took pics with him! Thanks for making it a surreal event for the whole family!!! Keep up the good work, there's many young children and children at heart like myself (heh, heh) that are grateful for each moment. God bless!! |

Everything I Could Have Imagined. Review by: lastgnerve, May 11, 2009 |
| If you like The Little Mermaid, you'll LOVE this show. The music is beautiful and the leads are fantastic. If you are not impressed with big budget lighting/special effects, you may find this a little less special, but I could not imagine anyone who would not appreciate the beautiful music and vocal performances. |

Supporting characters too weak... Review by: FHDaD, Apr 27, 2009 |
Just saw this on Sunday, 4/26. My 6 year old daughter had a really fun time, so that's truly is enough for me. THAT SAID (lol)... I really think this show missed the boat a little (pun intended). The portrayers of Ariel and Eric were quite good, I must say - both had great voices and captured the gentleness of their chartacters very well. My complaint is with the portrayals of the supporting characters - most particularly King Triton ... read more and Ursula. Both should have been potrayed MUCH MORE over-the-top and larger-than-life that they were. The King Triton I saw never even raised his voice and was played more like Mike Brady. And the Ursula I saw - while it was ACTED very well - sang her songs too softly and pretty for my liking, rather than belty and with the sinister attitude I feel the role demands. The understudy we saw who played Sebastion was pretty darn good, as was the boy who played Flounder (although I personally feel an adult could have been used to play this role - never bought him and Ariel as friends). Scuttle had some great punchlines but they we're never delivered with the "umpf!" that they needed (and that Buddy Hackett did perfectly with them in the movie).

Fun show - worth it Review by: Peter, Apr 20, 2009 |
| I have seen this twice and the second time around was much much better. I thought it was a great show and my family thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't know what all the negative reviews are about... go see this and have fun. |

The Little Mermaid Delivers Review by: theatremom, Apr 20, 2009 |
| Wow, I'm glad I didn't allow the negative reviews to prevent my taking my six year old son to this show. But, we know that Disney always delivers, so we didn't pay too much attention to the negativity. The set is just terrific - very different from what I'd expected and in a good way. A wonderful use of lighting as well. The singing is first rate, of course, and the choreography is impeccable. I'd highly recommend it for all ages. The only ... read more distraction for me was the children, since there are, of course, a lot of them in the audience. But, that's to be expected with The Little Mermaid and if it helps develop a taste for the stage, then all the better. |

Review by: Very Satisfied, Apr 12, 2009 |
| This was an excellent show. All these people here with their bad reviews have no idea what they are talking about. The story is the same, just a little added in like always. The skating was excellent. How can a person let skating distract them.... Their voices were great. The effects were awesome. I would definetly go see it again. |

Broadway snobs need not apply...great show Review by: disneyfirst, Feb 26, 2009 |
| The negative reviewers on here are clearly snobs because this was a great show. Scene design and stage effects were awesome, music and vocals were great. Some costumes were cheesey, the acting was good. Most of all the kids (3 and 5) loved it! The story line changes from the movie fit in here just fine. I would see it again! Definitely recommend, especially for fans of the movie. |

Magical, wonderful show! Review by: G-Mo, Jan 27, 2009 |
As I've come to expect from Disney, The Little Mermaid is magical, breathtaking, exuberant, amazing, delightful entertainment. I could go on, but I think you get the idea. On the slightly negative side, I found some of the casting a bit off kilter appearance-wise, but my five-year-old granddaughter didn't seem to notice this, so - no problem Although the costumes were, for the most part, fabulous, I thought poor little Flounder’s, in spite of ... read more the young man's obvious talent and magnificent voice, was a bit lacking. The poor little "guppy" appeared to be in baggy, yellow jammies with blue spots. His spiked, blue-sprayed hair didn't help much with creating the illusion. Again, my granddaughter didn't seem to notice. What she DID notice, however, which I found a bit startling, was Ariel's use of the phrase "Oh my God" at the beginning of one of her songs. Certainly not what I would expect from Disney! I'm not shocked or offended by anything, really, but I do think it supremely disrespectful and downright tacky to reduce the name of the Creator to a mere expletive. It's such an easy fix. What's wrong with "Oh my gosh"? When my granddaughter was pretending to be Ariel the next day, she uttered the phrase. When her Mom and I stopped her and explained why this was unacceptable, of course, she replied: "Ariel said it." We had to again explain the reasons why she shouldn't (and that Ariel had been improperly directed), I also gave her my word that I would contact Disney about this blunder. I'm the world's biggest Disney fan of all things Disney. But come on you guys, you're above this. If you're going to use the name of God, please, use it a respectful, grateful way so that the children will learn to do the same, gosh darn it! Helene A. M.-C. |

Under the Sea...And Underwhelmed!! Review by: Dad in Houston, Jan 21, 2009 |
| I wanted to LOVE this show! It's my favorite Disney movie and they did SUCH a good job with Lion King and Beauty... Unfortunately, I could only just LIKE it! It was a LOT of spectacle over substance...the skating (while innovative) was a MAJOR distraction. The music was wonderful. Sierra Boggess was the DEFINITE highlight. She was SO believable as Ariel that I did find myself getting teary from time to time. KUDOS to her...she makes the ... read more show. Other performers were highlights as well...Norm Lewis and the Chef (both of whom where also EXTREMELY friendly to the fans at the stage door!!!) I must admit, I was disappointed in Ms. Scott...I felt her performance was less than inspiring...she acted bored and tired (she could learn a thing or two from Ms. Boggess). Then, the most disappointing was her less than friendly exit from back-stage...as a major star, she should be willing to stop and sign the autographs of the MANY young fans who paid a large sum of money to see her. She pulled a TOTAL diva and ignored everyone as she walked to her car. VERY sad because a lot of people braved very cold weather to wait for her autograph. If she is unwilling to sign autographs then she should leave by another exit. Again, extremely disappointing!! In all, the show was good...beautiful to look with a few outstanding performances...but, not worth paying full price. Get your tickets at a discount!! |

Review by: TheatreTeacher, Dec 27, 2008 |
This was the most disappointing Broadway show I have EVER seen. I am a high school drama teacher who enjoys all types of theatre, but this was out of control. I would have left at intermission if I wasn't with my 11 year-old sister, who seemed to enjoy it. The design elements were a horrid display of money without concept or purpose, and the story (which has changed a lot from the movie) was laughable. The only bright spot for ... read more me was the young boy playing Flounder (the D'Addario boy) who stole the show from all the professional adult performers. Of course, I did see Sherie Rene Scott (Ursula)'s & Norm Lewis (Triton)'s understudies, and I assume those two salvage a little of the show if you get the opportunity to see them... The music is OK, but buy the CD and save the money because the show is so disappointing considering that just down the street the same producer's are showcasing the most creative show to ever hit Broadway ("The Lion King") and none of that focused creativity made it to "Mermaid." Bring back Julie Taymor! |

Surprised at how much we enjoyed this Review by: Craiggers38, Dec 26, 2008 |
| We went to see this as we are fans of Sherie Rene Scott (Ursula) due to her work as part of the original cast in both "Aida" and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels". We loved Ms. Scott, but we also thought the show was beautifully and inventively staged. We've seen other Disney Broadway productions (Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins) and we liked this one the most. I personally think it's odd that anyone would expect the stage production to ... read more be a duplicate of the movie (same with the staging of "Mary Poppins", which was first a book and then a movie, but some reviewers here were expecting a scene by scene live staging of the movie). |
