No time for Niles and Patsy to get a word in Review by: ME, Dec 15, 2010 |
It was an exercise in self-indulgence by the director who got really lucky in his actors. There is a one-hour monologue in the beginning that would have been charming if it were not one hour long. I wanted to scratch my eyeballs out by the end of it, as I could feel my life ticking away. When he finally finished his monologue, the show took off, and was quite fun. But I recommend, show up for the show 1 hour in. PS: While he monologues,... read more, many wonderful actors are underused, and told to just stand on the sides. Other irritants include a maid who only speaks one monosyllable word rhyming with true. At least 15 minutes of the remaining time is spent in the cast trying to figure out what the maid is saying. One tedious example- she says blue. After 15 minutes we learn that a princess has arrived. |

La Bete you have a good time! Review by: Diract 66, Nov 29, 2010 |
| Doesn't he ever shut up....No, never! For the whole half hour the were laughs galore, and the time just flew by. Each bit of stage business, and each inflection and vocal variety, by Mark Rylance was a behold to watch and hear. If any actor can steal a show and take command of the stage as he did, then an award is in the performance. David Hyde Pierce the straight man through this play is also wonderful to watch. The Alexanderine verse and rhyme ... read more is done so well that it never interferes with the rhythm of the play. Moliere would be proud. He is in the play as a similiar character played by Pierce, and he is also there in 'name' only, if you can find it. A very funny play, with some weary spots, but still a serious tone dealing with ethics, that caused a discussion after the play was over. Closer to two hours than the hour and half of some plays, no intermission, but a lot of humor. This fool is not so foolish if he fools everyone else and wins in the end to be the head fool! By the way, how do you get to the books on the upper shelves??? |

Triumphant comic acting! Review by: arfarf, Nov 6, 2010 |
| Mark Rylance's performance is an absolute tour-de-force, endlessly inventive and achingly funny. The play as a whole is somewhat uneven, with some dull patches interspersed among many moments of high hilarity. Overall, well worth seeing, and Rylance alone is worth the price of admission. |

Better than expected, go see it. Review by: The Man, Nov 4, 2010 |
| I went to this play as a favor for a friend of mine and did not think I would like it. It turned out that I was wrong and my friend did me a favor for recommending it. Very funny, talented cast and I liked the way everyone talked in rhyme. Usually any play is worth seeing just to watch David Hyde Pierce perform. |

So entertaining! Review by: Legs, Oct 27, 2010 |
| What fun! Mark Rylance is spectacular and David Hyde Pierce really shows off his splendid comedic timing. The entire cast is wonderful and Joanna Lumley is gorgeous as well as perfect in the role of the Princess. Under the laughs, there is a lot to think about, as well. Do not miss this one! |

| Extremely enjoyable. While Joanna Lumley and David Hyde Pierce's performances are good, Mark Rylance steals the show! He is absolutely amazing! |

Review by: Doppleganger, Oct 19, 2010 |
A rare and wondrous theatrical experience. Mark Rylance, David Hyde Pierce and Joanna Lumley all give superb performances ably supported by a fine company in the portrayal of David Hirson's 'Moliere-esque' farce of highbrow performing art versus lowbrow. Amongst such fine thesbians, Mark Rylance's knockabout street trouper stands out as surely one of the most memorable and funniest stage renditions of all time. It was a privilege to witness and ... read more without doubt is one of my personal highlights of seeing a multitude of shows over a long period both in London, Broadway and elsewhere. Not to enjoy such artistry is sad. Consummately directed by Matthew Warchus building on his successes in Boeing Boeing and God of Carnage. |

Great Fun Review by: Carol, Oct 9, 2010 |
The play is witty, clever, and BRILLIANTLY acted by Mark Rylance. It is a take-off of French comedy a la Moliere, and satirizes politics and society. David Hyde Pierce, the comedian, plays the straight man to Rylance's buffoon. This is a thinking person's play, and although it could use some editing, it is a wonderful theater experience. Mark Rylance should win the Tony for this one. |

It bombed in 1992 and it will bomb again. Review by: BV, Oct 2, 2010 |
| I saw the paly on September 26 because I wanted to see David Hyde Pierce. I liked him in comedies and musical, but he cannot do a drama. His acting was especially bad compared to Mark Rylance and Joanna Lumley. The whole play is in verse and often very difficult to understand because the actors speak too fast. The show is too pretentious and the point it is trying to make is a sold as the hills. I was glad when it was over. I wasted 2 hours. ... read more |
