Great Drama Returns to Broadway Review by: RALPHIE, Mar 3, 2007 |
Great Drams Returns to Broadway with JOURNEY'S END, a brilliant and engrossing play from 70 years ago about World War I and the men who fought in that war. I've never before seen anything that rings more true than this, and I include the film All Quiet on the Western Front.
For readers of the NY Times let's spell it out: Once the German Army invaded France, the solution was not endless Alice in Wonderland discussion. No, it was to fight ... read more back -- and do so until the German Army is driven out. This play involves the British involvement in the struggle, and has a narrow focus on one company of men.
The play does the soldiers proud. No bone is tossed to the so-called "peace" crowd. There is no homosexual theme (as there is in more than 26 current Broadway shows). Nor is there any diversity agenda in the casting (as in the odd mix you see in the current and messed-up Les Miz).
Strongly recommended on all counts. |

We needed a good drama this season and we got it! Review by: DMS, Feb 25, 2007 |
| Memorable performances all around. Great production. The "sound designer" deserves a Tony of his/her own. Very moving and even though it takes place in WWI, there is no sense of it being tired, old or outdated. Not "light" by any means but good dramas are rarely "light." |

This is what great theater is about! Review by: , Feb 23, 2007 |
I don't see how anyone can say this is a boring show.
I thought the acting was outstanding, you get caught up in each & every character, you care about them, you know what is going to ultimately happen and the psychology of each person is intriguing. During the performance I attended you could hear a pin drop in the audience, listening to each & every word. It is based on a true story.
If you are not a drama person, ... read more then don't see this, but if you love great theater, do go.
Not that I always agree with the reviewers, but it got all around outstanding reviews, which is a rarity these days. |

Long and Dreary Review by: jla, Feb 23, 2007 |
| The play kept my interest, but it was very long and dreary. Plus, with all the drinking that went on, no one showed the slightest sign of being inebriated. How did they do it? |

Dark abd Dull Review by: FrankB, Feb 20, 2007 |
| I found this play boring and tedious. The stage is stark and very dark. This was a time waster, there are far better shows to see. Save your $$$. |

First-rate performance by an outstanding cast! Review by: Paul WIlliams, Feb 17, 2007 |
| What a moving performance of a play that have performed with regularity in London's East End. I was on the edge of my seat during the dramatic clash between Stanhope (Hugh Dancy) and Hibbert (Justin Blanchard)...the chemistry between the two was amazing. The entire cast was outstanding and gave the audience a first-rate performance of R.C. Sherrif's classic play. |

Not Anti-War...Pro-Soldier Review by: LTC J. Wilson, Feb 16, 2007 |
| As R.C. Sherriff intended, Journey's End is not an anti-war play. Rather it is a powerful and moving production that put the audience in touch with the effects of a prolonged war experience on the men in the trenches. Boyd Gaines anchors the cast with a solid performance. Hugh Dancy acts as good as he looks. Justin Blanchard made a strong debut played the role that Sherriff wrote portraying his personal experience as a reluctant warrior.... read more. All told, the play was superbly cast and the actors all made the audience feel as if they were sharing the experience with them. |

Splendid WWI Drama, great acting and solid play Review by: stagestrucknyc.com, Feb 15, 2007 |
| This is an all-around great evening at the theater. A solid cast and fine direction, and RC Sherriff's 1928 play is very moving. It makes you feel that you are in the bunker, experiencing the shelling, and witnessing the daily lives of British soldiers waiting for the attack they know will come, while dreaming about the rugby matches at school and the stream in the pleasant woods at home. |

Heavy to carry but worth the weight Review by: folkyboy, Feb 15, 2007 |
Having heard some snippy remarks from people who had seen this production prior, I went in trepidation. However, I am happy to say how much they all melted inside the recreation of the bunker on stage before me.
This material is extremely heavy and not for one who is aiming at going to a show with dancing cats on stage or looking for "A New Argentina". This is very much about the actual experience of the soldiers in World World I. ... read more Sometimes it can be gritty and hard to swallow, but this is what makes it historic!
Hugh Dancy and Stark Sands deliver heartbreaking performances under the orbing glow of the candle lit stage. Definitely a contender for the Tony's! |
