| Just came back from seeing JCSS with 15 people> Ten 16 year old girls(my daughter's birthday party) and five friends from 53 to 75yrs old.GREAT SHOW Everyone loved it. started a little slow for a few minutes but then took off.Vocals were EXCELLENT |

| I saw the performance the last time around and found this production to be updated and more current with the times. The performances of Judas and JC were top notch. Their voices were strong and exceptional. The Herod scene stole the show...campy, energetic and fun! I enjoyed the show more than I thought I would. Go see it! |

We saw this on Saturday and it was fantastic. First of all, before I begin, it is loud..it is a rock opera..so it is naturally louder than a regular musical. The story was great, and having seen a production or two of this, I enjoyed this performance immensely as did my five friends.
The portrayals of Jesus and Judas were great, but clearly Josh Young as Judas really gave it all with a passion I have not seen on Broadway in a while.... read more. Tom Hewitt was great as the tortured Pilate, and The Herod number gave some wonderful levity to it all. I was a little disappointed in Mary Magdeline - while she had a beautiful voice, she did not sustain her notes with the power that I have seen and heard others do. (Hard to compare to Yvonne Ellman.) In any event, we loved the whole production.. a must see. |

To see Judas (Josh Young) and Simon, will make it worth while!
This Judas has been by far the best one I've seen, and I've seen quite a few. He had passion, you could tell he put is all in this. He was just perfection. I'm so glad he came back, after his illness 4/13/12 because we saw it 4/14/12. Judas alone is worth the ticket. You will not be disappointed.

He was nasal at times, and had no passion throughout the show. It was like he couldn't be bothered. He seemed bored, really. Mary was great, and I absolutely loved the love triangle with Judas.

What can I tell you other than the music is still playing through my head (in a good way) ever since I saw this revival of JCS! Great cast, outstanding performance. My personal favorite highlight? King Herod's "Vegas style" number -- absolutely hilarious and welcomed comic relief!

| I am an avid broadway theater goer. Last night I saw Jesus Christ Superstar. I had not seen it since 1972. I wasn''t sure what to expect because I kept reading that they had changed this production. I was soooo happy after seeing it last night. Josh Young, who plays Judas was absolutely fantastic. He has an unbelievable voice. Others have said that they couldn''t understand the lyrics, I had no problem. There were times that I couldn''t hear all ... read more the words that Jesus was singing. It could have been where I was sitting which was near the curtain where the actors exit. Otherwise, I truly enjoyed this production and especially Josh (Judas). I hope we continue to see him in other productions in the future. |

Josh Young. There I said it. His performance was so magnificent that all others paled to him. When Ms Kennedy, Mary of Magdalene, was on by herself, she was great! With Mr. Nolan, Jesus, great! With Mr. Young? Where'd she go? He so overshadowed everyone.
However, the staging, the music the updating made for one remarkable event. If you know the show, love the lyrics and are in town, stop by and see it. Well worth the price of admission. If ... read more you remember this show from your youth, it will touch your heart again. |

| Saw the show on March 19, 2012 on Broadway. The first Act of the show was rushed and at the end of Act II the show just literally died. Except for the understudy, who played Judas and at times the person portraying Jesus, the entire cast was sub par. Mary, Simon and Caiphas were ill chosen. "Simon Zealots" number was just actors moving around no connection to the audience. Gethsemane a major song for Jesus did not inspire.The Superstar and the ... read more Crucifixion failed to be entertaining. The cheap gimmick of Christ rising to the cross was just that a cheap gimmick. Rent the movie and save yourself a lot of your hard earned money. The orchestra was great. |

Great Show; I Hope They Iron Out The Rough Spots. Review by: JCS Fan, Mar 19, 2012 |
I saw the matinee show on Saturday, March 17th. The music was fantastic. Judas was very believable and exciting and practically stole the show. Ciaphas was very strong as a devious planner. Jesus sang beautifully, but failed to exude the stage presence needed for such a demanding role. Jesus was a bit too passive, not expressing enough love and leadership through mannerisms and passion.
I did not like the way that the ... read more actors and actresses who played important supporting roles (such as Herod, Pilate, Mary Magdelene etc.) also appeared on stage before and after in the crowd as apostles or townspeople. When Herod appeared (and he was great) I knew that I had already seen the actor on the stage as part of the ensemble. Likewise, after Pilate finished one of his songs, I then saw him sitting at the table at the last supper as one of the apostles. Even Mary Magdelene, after she sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" was later seen as a sick person clinging to Jesus asking for healing. This aspect of the play made it seem more like a high school production than a Broadway show.
The healing scene reminded me very much of "The Walking Dead".

| Jesus Christ Superstar is a powerful and moving experience. The scenes are in a fast-paced, almost rapid fire-like sequence that keeps you focused on the stage. The first intermission comes after 50 minutes and you are shocked it has arrived because of how the show has pulled you in. Jesus is played by Mr. Nolan, acting as if he were Him. Herod was Hysterical. JCS is an event not to be missed. |

| My wife and I just recently saw the show. I saw the original production with Ben Vereen which was very good. We did not enjoy this production. The music was too loud and scenery was not worthy of a Broadway show. |

| OK...I arrived at the theater last night(Monday, 3/12), with high expectations, based on all the earlier reviews from California and Canada, and, to my wife and I, this musical simply did not live up to our expectations on many levels. I would rate it a 3 star show, out of 5, and heres why: 1. The music is a 5. Period. Its timeless....ages incredibly well...it crosses all genres, and mixes well to all age groups. I thought the overall ... read more cast handled their jobs very well, especially Herrod, Pilate, and Simon... Herrod in particular sets a new bar for outrageous. The leads were.....great musically...but weak, acting-wise. Judas left the show after his second song (first act) and was replaced by an understudy due to a slight injury. I felt bad because it really looked like he was straining more to sing...and having problems breathing (we sat 2nd row center and could see his discomfort)....after hearing so much about this performance, and the role being so pivitol, I wanted very much to see Josh Young handle it, but alas, not to be. 2. So singing , a "5", acting, a "3"....even through a crucifixtion, there really was no emotional attachment to Jesus or Mary, and I heard that from other folks sitting around us (well...that being said, I have to be fair...the woman sitting next to me was sobbing for the last 5 minutes of the play...she was emotionally attached for sure!)3. Heres where the play gets a "0": the pacing. This thing flies across the stage like an F-15, with no breaks between songs, set changes, or actors coming and going...it just.....its like the Director has decided to throw out every possible song hook at break-neck speed, and every possible bit of dialogue at even faster speed, and hope that by already knowing how the story turns out, we can all "fill-in" the blanks and bits of dialogue and nuance that are lost in the fast-moving shuffle. Its crazy, and sad, because moments that deserve to be held onto a bit for that extra bit of emoting whiz by and it all gets lost until the very end when the show comes to a halt for a light-shattering finale..... So add them up, average them out, and its a "3".....having said that, I love the show itself for what it is, and I believe that it will receive kudos from many in the audience who have not seen other versions to compare it to. See it with discounts, but dont pay the full rate or you run the risk of being dissapointed if you agree with any of the points Ive made on why I scored it the way I did. |

Over the past 35 years Ive seen various productions of this show, most starring rockers in the lead roles where the show was more a concert as opposed to a theatre piece.
This production is very unique as it comes off closer to an opera or musical piece due to the quality of the performers and ensemble. One should remember that Rice/Weber wrote this piece as a Rock Opera or Pop Opera,
To me what makes this prodcution relevent ... read more is the way its staged.. Everything from the moving bleachers to the flashing zipper giving you the timeline gives this show a new view. Too me the best scenes were the ensemble numbers especially with the chorregraphy!
The performers were all good.. Josh Young was wonderfull in his portrayal of Judus. He gave the role depth you can sense his inner struggle of attraction and repulsion of Jesus, there is even hints of jealously towards Mary Magdalene. Paul Nolan was very good, his vocal performance was easy on the ears; no screcching like the other Jesus's Ive seen i.e Ted Neely. Chileana Kennedy had a wonderfull voice as well, Both actors playing Pilot and Herod were excellant.
My only complaint was the size of the stage. I saw this production last July in Stratford Ontario. The stage was much bigger, here in NYC it was bitcramped espeically in the big numbers with the ensemble.

This was the 7th time I have seen this production over several years. I saw this show on 3/5/12. A trip to NY was made just to see this show. The 6 previous productions had Ted Neely in them and were not on Broadway. The day before this show, my wife and I had the opportunity to see Godspell for the first time, which was incredible.
I immediately noticed that the characters did not appear to be showing any feeling unless it was anger ... read more or pity. The voice of Jesus (Paul Nolan) was incredible, but his character stayed mostly expressionless through out his performance. When everyone is singing about Jesus and Caiaphas expresses anger about it to Jesus, Nolan is not smiling and reveling in his followers spirit.
The early verbal battles between Jesus and Judas were between two mostly expressionless characters. Good voices, but the characters were two dimensional. Chillina Kennedy gave the most dimension as an actress and had a splendid voice. She very often would stop singing the last words of her songs and just said the words.
Transitions between songs and scenes ran together and gave no time for any audience appreciation to be expressed (clapping and cheering). The pace was break-neck and we were at the Temple and Jesus is tearing up the place in under an hour. Try as I wanted to, I could not connect with these characters.
A modern stage design that included a crawling text tape that scrolls the length of the stage as words were typed did not seem appropriate until the very end when they started typing words from Christ that filled all the walls.
These actors need to feel confident in their story telling. The characters need to show what they are feeling on their faces. Songs & scene transitions need to have cued stops for people to clap and appreciate the actors.

| I saw the show last night and really enjoyed it. I only wish I could hear the lyrics that Judas was singing. He has a great voice, but I could NOT understand him, and I know all the songs by heart! Everyone else was very clear! The guests I brought said the same thing. |
