Great play, once in a lifetime performance by Mark Rylance Review by: Silversurfer, Apr 26, 2011 |
| ...It was the fastest 3 hours spent in a theater. What a great play, funny, moving and thought provoking. Rylance gives a Master Class performance. It certainly lived up to the hype. And the rest of the cast is outstanding as well, especially Mackenzie Crook and John Gallagher Jr. who are both outstanding. The set design is awesome, real trees, grass and chickens under the trailer. The ending was truly moving and awe inspiring. Rylance ... read more should and will win the Tony for this performance. Go now! |

Too Long, Too British Review by: DoctorJoeE, Apr 24, 2011 |
While sitting through almost 3 and a half hours of "Jerusalem", I couldn't help but think of the last well-publicized British theatre import, "Bombay Dreams." While the two shows have almost nothing in common, I fear the outcome could well be the same -- big hits in London, big disappointments on Broadway -- and for the same reason: Americans simply don't understand or appreciate many of the things that are very dear to the British. Bombay ... read more Dreams flopped in New York because Americans know little and care less about "Bollywood" movies; and they know and care even less about the idyllic sense Brits have of their own "Britishness." I'd be amazed if more than one American in a thousand knows the significance of William Blake's poem "Jerusalem", and the song set to it, which is sung in every church and at every event of any significance in the British Isles. At the performance my wife & I attended (a Saturday matinee), the audience seemed entertained during the first act -- laughed at all the jokes -- but fell silent during the second. During the third, the gentleman behind me was obviously and noisily asleep. The show is well-acted -- Mark Rylance in particular is as great as you would expect, as the perpetually-stoned antihero -- but it's just too long, and too quintessentially British, maybe not for New Yorkers, but certainly for tourists. I've heard that for any Broadway show to last past 6 weeks, it has to be popular with tourists. That's not going to happen with this show. So see it soon, and try to stay awake. |

SKIP IT Review by: Michele, Apr 23, 2011 |
| The first act was very good. After that it was "eh." Too long (so much could have been taken out without effecting the play) - two intermissions - ridiculous. Acting was very good otherwise. Ending was extremely disappointing - I'm one who likes closure. See Bengal Tiger, MotherF***ker with the Hat or Good People instead. |

| Saw this in NYC in preview. Mark Rylance is not to be missed. His acting in the role of "Rooster" is totally engaging and believable. You'll laugh, worry, smile and feel sad. Supporting actors are also excellent. The set,an outdoor scene with real grass, trees and an aluminum mobile home is the perfect setting for Rylance's quirky character. The show runs long, but you won't even notice. Don't forget to look for the chickens that ... read more live under the trailer! |

Debate continues here on 'Englishness' -thanks ex P.M. Brown, we English DON'T define it, ornery as we are - to which Butterworth makes a skillful, hilarious, brilliantly oblique contribution (I saw it 6 times in London; lucky me). You wouldn't want this fabulist, druggie, anti 'hero' as your neighbour (sic), but the (relative) distance of the stage lends enchantment. Resisting summary, this rich and magnificent prodction will ... read more have you hooting with laughter yet movrd by its pathos - and indeed bathos. A must see, and not only for Rylance's uaual genius, 'our Olivier, as one of our critics wrote. The rest of the cast abet him superbly too. |

Jerusalem a beautiful show with great acting Review by: pilgrimpal, Apr 11, 2011 |
| A really strange but beautifully acted play, a dysfunctional day in the English countryside with a hippie camper, his followers, and their families. Mark Rylance is spectacular, inhabiting the lead character, Rooster, and providing a dense human counterargument to suburbanization, against a background of St. George's Day festivities and the Blake poem which provided the play's title. |

Absolute compelling entertainment Review by: Rex, Bx, Apr 6, 2011 |
| This has to be one of the best dramedies on Broadway. Three hours of compelling, shocking, and thrilling entertainment. Mark Rylance's performance will have you on the edge of your seat, definitely deserves a Tony nomination!! Not suitable for children. |
