All the actors were outstanding; story plot was not clear. Langauge was x-rated. First act was more enjoyable than the rest of the play. The show was definitely too long, approximately 3 hours including intermissions.

| Saw the show last week & am still wondering why I bothered. Between the foul language, sniffing drugs, drinking vodka - the scene: an old Airstream trailer with garbage furniture strewn around the yard. If I wanted to be depressed, I could have stayed home & paid nothing. I can understand Rylance in the right play would be wonderful, but this was not the play. | I've been attending Broadway shows since I was a young kid, nearly 50 years now and while I'm usually entertained I'm rarely moved and almost never stunned. Then there are those exquisitely rare performances that remind me why I love theater. Jerusalem was one of those! Mark Rylance is a treasure. I've been watching him for years, going back to his Globe days and he just keeps surpassing himself. Probably worth it just for the Rylance performance. But it is a difficult disturbing play--although it does have some humorous lines.
Hate to trash a child actor-- but the one we saw last Wednesday matinee was awful and largely ruined a key monologue by Rylance. Not only was the boy looking all around largely expressionless except for boredom but his fingers were drumming. Clear that he wanted to be playing with his video games instead.... read more. Since in this scene, Rylance, his father, covered in blood, talking to him alone and giving one of his most impassioned speeechs I would have expected some reaction-- maybe fear, horror, concern even from a child much younger than this one, but instead there was the same blank distant expression throughout. Fortunately he only had a few scenes--but never saw him attempt to act in any of them. |

| Too long..... No plot..... Excessive vulgar language (which in my opinion served no purpose). Because of the heavy British accents, you miss some key lines. Did I mention No plot. 3 hours and two intermissions after the show started you leave scratching your head wondering why you just wasted 3 hours of your life. Oh did I mention there is no plot. Yes the acting is excellent and the the tony for best actor was well deserved, but again ... read more none of the show made much sense. Its actually a pity because with that acting and somewhat of a plot the show could have been phenomenal. This was a HUGE, HUGE, (and expensive) disappointment. | Pointless, plotless dud. Lots of unintelligible actors playing characters doing nothing but gamboling about bomed and stoned, albeit once or twice fairly entertainingly. HUGE disappointment. Mark Rylance is a brilliant actor, and I'd love to see him in a good play. The role is just an endurance contest, and he's a winner, but who cares in the context of this thudding bore. I saw Jerusalem yesterday and was stunned by the standing ovation that the play received at its conclusion. Yes, Mark Rylance’s performance was brilliant. And the set was very well-designed. But the play as a whole, it seemed to me (and to both of my two companions, I might add), left much to be desired.
For starters, there’s not much of a plot. Rooster is a washed-up has-been of a daredevil, a drug-dealing, alcoholic, pathological ... read more liar and child predator, broken in mind and spirit, and now reduced to relying on a motley crew of mostly teenagers for adulation, companionship and financial sustenance. He lives in relative squalor in a mobile home in the English countryside. But the times they are a’changing. A new residential development is sprouting up within hailing distance of Rooster’s abode and the residents of that new community, understandably, would like to see Rooster gone.
It is St. George’s Day in England and the locals are holding their annual county fair and parade. Rooster has received an eviction notice. And the rag-tag group around him are bemoaning the fact that things ain’t what they used to be and that this year’s fair won’t hold a candle to those of the old days, back when Rooster was performing his daredevil motorcycle stunts (and shattering his body in the process).
There are a number of subplots but they don’t really go anywhere. Rooster’s young son and the child’s mother show up for a brief visit and…nothing. One of Rooster’s hangers-on is planning to emigrate to Australia…or maybe not. A 15 year-old girl has gone missing…oh, there she is.
To all of which, I can only say: “So what.” If Rooster suffers the consequences of his actions, should we pity him? Or even empathize? Not me.
So here's the bottom line: If you want to see a single bravura theatrical performance (Mark Rylance as Rooster), go to this play. But if you're looking for anything more than that, skip it.

| I read all the reviews before going. Maybe I'm stupid (but I do have a PhD..), but I just didn't get it. I thought this was the worst broadway show I have ever seen. I didn't get it. There is no plot. There is no story. I want a refund. It wasn't only me. There were plenty of people during intermission looking for answers. Two elderly ladies came up to us during intermission asking if we were providing explanations about the story.... read more. And I get all the British jokes & slangs --so it wasn't that. I don't know what to say, I know about all the excellent reviews and I am so, so shocked. I can't believe I spent money on this and lost 3 hours of my life today. |

| This was one of the most incredible nights of theater that I have ever experienced. I was a bit concerned when I read that the play was almost three hours with two intermissions...but the time just flies by, as you are mesmerized by the acting of Mark Rylance. It is hilariously funny one minute, and powerfully moving the next. I do not think that the play is "too British", as I think that the theme and characters transcend ethnicity ... read more or nationality (there are plenty of American drug dealers who live in trailers, and have low life friends). Yes, there are a few very British referrences, but nothing that the average person wouldn't pick up on. This play is an absolute MUST SEE, and I am so glad that I took a chance on this one! | Absolutely amazing, astonishing and galvanizing performances of all the actors but especially Mark Rylance who is beyond brilliant.
