Unlike Julianne Moore, Julia Roberts or Denzel Washington, who came to New York with high expectations but failed to deliver, the star of "Jack Goes Boating," Philip Seymour Hoffman pulls off his role with an easy comic aplomb. His Jack is a big lumbering galoot who likes good bud and simple living. It's a terrific comic performance. What surprised me was how good the rest of the cast was, how balanced they were as a comic (and dramatic) team. ... read more Beth Cole, John Ortiz and Daphne Rubin-Vega all take this concoction (by playwright Bob Glaudini and director Peter Dubois) and serve it up with tremendous skill.
The play covers some rough territory, but at its heart it has the same "positive vibe" that Jack seeks from the reggae music he loves. It's the dramatic version of a piece of Sourpatch Kids candy -- on your first bite you say "wow, what is this?," but as you chew you discover the sweetness at the core.

great buzz Review by: Jeremy R., Mar 20, 2007 |
| this is a wonderful play that must be seen! It's charming and funny with such cool set designs! P.S.H. was perfect, he really is a different person in each role. The other actors were really great as well. I think people who thought it didn't have a story didn't realize that this is a character driven play, all the change and progression happens there, which is a nice change from the blah-blah formulaic crap that most new plays take to.... read more. You def will leave zenned out and happy. |

A perfectly ordinary play with some excellent acting Review by: theatergoer, Mar 15, 2007 |
| The previous rave review *must* be a joke. JACK GOES BOATING is at best a mediocre script: it reads a lot like DINNER WITH FRIENDS except with less grace and a lot of drugs. Philip Seymour Hoffman has a fine turn as Jack--a schmo out to land a date with a girl, *any* girl--but the script meanders, and I found myself apologizing to my date for a less-than-thrilling evening of social drama. There's better in NYC. |

A profound surprise. It unfurls and we are revealed! Review by: MartyJSheila, Mar 14, 2007 |
| This evening is rich! What a cast! What a delicate and sneaky script! Like American Buffalo, or Hot L Baltimore, it may be mistaken for having a "poor story," but only by the careless. It's a multi-layered, poignant announcement of man against each and every day. Unbearably light, a la Kundera. A revelatory examination of courage in the face of mortality, all at the speed of our lives. This is why I go see theater. To watch the ... read more hero (me?) struggle, to do his utmost, and so become what he will, all while knowing there is also the imprint of destiny and an irrevocable past. Brutal! Beautiful! Beautiful! You think this sounds good... now remember who's in this play, and you could go for the performances alone. |
