Don't miss this one Review by: bandcmoore, Mar 12, 2010 |
If you're looking for a modern, energetic musical, this it it! Wonderful synergy of hip hop and latino music and dancing, while telling a touching story about a changing ethnic neighborhood. Strong cast delivers a stronger performance. Definitely a must see. |

Must have been an off day Review by: Murphyturkey1, Feb 28, 2010 |
Oh my gosh, the performance I saw was the absolute worse performance I have ever seen ON BROADWAY!!! The story: What? I couldn't follow it for the life of me. The Actors: At this performance there was a moment here or there, but sadly I had to wait through so much muck before another interesting moment came along. The Singing: Blah, and oh the lead actress (understudy) was off key big time during this performance. Every time she came ... read more forward to sing, I found myself cringing. The music: I was so lost during this performance, the lead actress was so incredibly off key, that I don't even remember the music. Verdict: I left during intermission, which of course shocked me! I have never walked out of a Broadway performance before. The best thing I can say is that thank you God I didn't pay full price for this. |

RELATABLE, INSPIRATIONAL & FUN!!! Review by: D. Majors, Jan 31, 2010 |
Let me start by saying that I have never before bothered to write a review about any one of the numerous plays/musicals/concerts/exhibits I've seen. In fact, I've never reviewed a movie, restaurant, album or experience of any kind. I have recommended my favorites things to friends and family, of course, and given the occasional thumbs-up or -down on Twitter but that has been the extent of it. I was moved to review "In The ... read more Heights" because the cast & crew deserve the accolades and because I believe that every human being would do well to see this musical. I feel like my future is brighter because I have. I may seem melodramatic but that is one thing "In The Heights" is not. This was the most relatable production I've ever seen. I think it would feel that way to everyone but if you, like me, are a native New Yorker... Wow! The characters are exceptionally authentic. I take my hat off to Corbin Bleu because I can't imagine anyone else playing the role of "Usnavy." I didn't even know it was Corbin Bleu until after my mother & I left the theatre and saw a throng of people waiting outside for autographs. He was excellent and this role was, as they say, written for him! It must be noted, however, that Mr. Bleu was no better than his co-stars. Every performer on the stage was notable, completely committed, multi-talented and left a lasting impression. "Sonny" drew the loudest applause from the audience but my favorite character, if I had to choose just one, was "Cha Cha" as the sassy salon owner's pious daughter in hot pink! Singing, dancing, emoting and hamming it up -- everyone did everything capaciously. If good theatre is measurable by the cast's ability to make the audience care about and emotionally invest themselves in the characters... then "In The Heights" has succeeded. I was moved to tears several times throughout and I assure you that this is NOT a sad play nor am I mawkish woman. The players are simply so relatable that each glaring parallel brought about a personal revelation or resolution. The circumstance is so present tense and per diem that it lends a unmatched understanding between the actors and the audience. The romances are reluctant and real; the plights are ordinary; the blessings are feasible; the solutions are aspirational & the happily ever after is attainable. Overall, "In The Heights" is a diligent and deliberate musical. The attention to detail is astounding. At any given moment, as the main characters are center stage, the supporting stars[!] are still doing what they do in Washingtons Heights... or East Flatbush or the Lower East Side or maybe your neck of the woods. The script, posturing, personalities and pizazz is so genuine and constant. Even the set designers deserve kudos for making the atmosphere palpable and the soundtrack is incisive, appropriate and memorable too. I highly recommend "In The Heights" to anyone seeking inspiration, nostalgia, representation, humility or just a good laugh. This is the best way that I have ever spent 130 minutes consecutively. A small part of me couldn't wait 'til it was over because I was so eager to get out, pick myself up by the bootstraps and make my own life better in many small ways! It's got that effect. This production, in my humble opinion, is as must-see as anything has ever been. |

Sorry, but I found it to be a waste of time. Review by: everyonesacritic, Jan 22, 2010 |
BOOORRRIINNNGGG! Here's what happens: A group of characters has some dialogue about conflict in their lives. And then there's a song. The scene changes. Another group of characters has some dialogue about conflict in their lives. And then there's a song (and maybe some dancing). The scene changes. Another group of characters has some dialogue about conflict in their lives. And then there's a song. The scene ... read more changes. Ad infinitum. |

I was really in the heights! I kept wondering how high the set was instead of watching the (Yawn) show Review by: goldenboy, Dec 22, 2009 |
Some winning performances, great energy, great dancing the set was breathtaking --unfortunately I found myself wondering how high the set was. I guess I was truly in the heights. I estimated it at 60-70 feet. And that is what I did when I became bored during a Broadway Musical. More than 5 times. There's a lot of good in Into the Heights. The actors, the singing, the dancing and some of the music-- but overall the experience proved a dud.... read more. It was too long and the plot uninvolving. The book and story are awful

Who is Benny supposed to be? Review by: NedRacine, Dec 4, 2009 |
Having been a great fan of IN THE HEIGHTS, I am intrigued with the prior poster's comments regarding the character Benny. After seeing the show twice, and listening to the cast recording dozens of times, I too began to feel that Benny's ethnic appearance was inconsistent with his role and character. That is, why was Nina's father so unaccepting of Benny as if he was not "one of us"? This would have made sense if Benny was Black or a non-Hispanic ... read more White. But to me he appeared to be an Hispanic, or at least he could of been. I think if Benny was supposed to be an African-American or a non-Hispanic Caucasian, then in the interest of the plot the directors should have cast someone who clearly fits the bill in terms of appearance. This would have enriched the show. Otherwise, the actor paying Benny is very good. |

my magical heights ride...GO SEE IT NOW! Review by: one of many..., Nov 22, 2009 |
I loved this show. I went with a friend of mine who was on her 7th trip to see the show, but I was still a virgin to "THE HEIGHTS" at the time. As you can imagine the show was touted over and over again by this friend (and the other friend who couldn't make it, who would have been on her 8th or 9th visit... yes these girls love their HEIGHTS), but I was not totally disappointed. The singing, dancing & ACTING was really up to par. I ... read more thoroughly enjoyed the show. The actor who plays Sonny seemed to be birthed for this role, every beat and every nook and cranny of the character seemed to be under his total control! The only down part for me came in the casting of Benny. The role of Benny was played by a very very very talented actor, who was extremely perfect for the part beside the fact that he is suppose to be "Visually" seen as African American from the audience's perspective. Unfortunately this amazing actor, who handles all of the dancing, singing & emotional ups and downs of this role like a TRUE pro, is fair skinned & lighter in some cases than his hispanic cast mates, thusly it was 3/4 through the first act when i turned to my date and asked, "Is Benny suppose to be black?". Which wouldn't be a problem if that fact wasn't critical for the story line. My date said, "good job, on my first trip to see the show I didn't get that point until 1/2way through the second act". In which lies the problem, I'd imagine every night after leaving this show a small percentage of the audience NEVER gets that point and that's a shame. If you read this review before going to see the show, know that you're in for a ride. The cast does the playwright, director, choreographer & anyone else behind the scenes we don't see a lot of justice in representing there work. GO SEE IT NOW!!! |

Not really Washington Heights Review by: Maria, Sep 28, 2009 |
| If you think this is a play about the real Washington Heights full of Dominican flavor, you'll be very disappointed. In the Heights should be called In the Barrio (around E 116th ST). The Spanish Harlem where most of the population is Puerto Rican. In Washington Heights, where I have lived for more than 25 years, the bodegas, beauty salon, and cab companies are owned by Dominicans, not Puerto Ricans like in this play. To top it off, the only ... read more hope of the people in this play is a girl who gets to go to college, and guess what is her heritage? Puerto Rican. Maybe because the writer is Puerto Rican, he just wanted to continually flash the Puerto Rican flag to the audience, but believe me, there are not that many PR in Washington Heights. Don't get me wrong. Besides the choreography, which I thought was choppy and repetitive without emphasizing the juicy bachata and merengue, the play is entertaining. However, this is not Washington Heights. Where are the Jews, police officers, the vendors selling from pastelitos to habichuela con dulce? What a pity! In the Heights wasted the chance Dominicans had to show all the flavor of their culture on Broadway. What a disappointment! Didn't Puerto Ricans have already West Side Story? Why steal the Heights from the Dominicans? |

It's all good in the hood--er, heights! Review by: La vie Boheme, Sep 20, 2009 |
| I have seen ITH twice, and I would most definitely see it again. I was fortunate to see most of the original cast in their roles, and they did a phenomenal job. Everything about ITH contributes to a great show- amazing acting, catchy songs, rockin' choreography, and a story close to the heart. Go see this show! |
