bo-o-oring Review by: ilasik, Apr 29, 2009 |
The little mundane moments in life are nice but watching a play about it is quite tedious. My friend and I were nodding off at parts of it. Acting is good but the process of watching this is not enjoyable. The theater was 1/3 empty. |

Loved the play and so sad it is closing early Review by: sophie, Apr 28, 2009 |
| Loved the unpretentiousness of this play, its subtle message and the superb acting! It celebrates the mundaness of life, those easy-to-forget nondescript points that make up the big picture, the web of our own "pointilist paintings". So sad to read that the play will close:( |

New, fresh and modern Review by: Broadway fan, Apr 17, 2009 |
| Nice play based on an original idea, the story is very 'on air' actually. André de Shields gives a wonderful performance, he's the real star of the show ; there are also a lot of parallels with the paintings in the set that are worth seeing. |

a show with a few treasures Review by: Doodling Girl, Apr 16, 2009 |
Saw this show on March 14 and it was an enjoyable evening. It was performed that night without intermission which was nice because it led to a better flow of the play. Andre de Shields was the bright light of the show that evening. His character has some wonderful dialogue about relationships and Mr. de Shields gave a wonderful performance. I love Jeremy Irons. His performace was good, but a little his delivery was a bit soft soft at ... read more times. Joan Allen was wonderful the night we saw the show. |

Poor Impression about Impressionism Review by: dear theatergoer, Apr 15, 2009 |
We disliked this play. What a waste of talent! It was truly a bore. The technical production values were high quality...Nice use of set and lighting effects...Loved the concept and use of paintings and scrims (although some were not examples of Impressionism, which bothered me)...Play was well directed, but what a lousy script! It felt like we were seeing a low-par Lifetime movie on stage. Characters were totally one-dimensional. There ... read more was no chemistry between Allen and Irons...He looked too old for the role...DeShields and Mason brought some life to their underwritten characters due to their acting ability, certainly not the trite scribbling of the playwright. Did the uplifting ending mean our lives are just a series of banal paintings (probably done by Jane Seymour)? If that's the case, I am more depressed that disappointed. A dull evening at the theater, although the audience around us seemed to enjoy it more than we did. GRADE: C (with discount), C- (without it)

Disappointed Review by: , Apr 10, 2009 |
| This could have been a great story; but the characters were impossible to relate to. The writing was stilted and the acting seemed overdone by Allen, yet blase by Irons. In a word Boring. |

Review by: sailgirl, Apr 5, 2009 |
Jeremy Irons and Joan Allen are wonderful in this truly delightful romantic comedy. What a pleasure to watch them in a play written for grown-ups, without a cast of socially deviant characters, violence, murders, vampires or space aliens. Just two impossibly attractive, worldly people finding thier way through life. And, it has a happy ending! |

Intriquing, Inviting and Yet perplexing and even dautning..Must see To Feel Review by: loriyvette, Apr 1, 2009 |
| My husband and I saw this show after I booked tickets having gotten an offer online via blackberry early that morning. I have to say that I was very excited to finally have an opportunity to see Jeremy Iron perform live. The first ten minutes of the show I sat tranfixed but also perplexed and wondering where this was going...Then it happened, I listened intently and every moment was worth watching and listening to carefully. My husband left ... read more with questions that I attempted to answer for him, and he in fact is usually very deep thinking, I just loved the feelings I got that ranged from laughter, sadness , sorrow, pitty, empathy and sometimes confusion. On another note I have recommended many others see it and plan to see it again before the 6 month stint is over. All said, I really really fell in love with this show and have yet to stop thinking of it ! |

Review by: BongoBox, Mar 30, 2009 |
Wow. Folk here must have seen a different play than me, because I thought it was "OK" at best. Yes, Jeremy Irons was good (although at times WAY quiet), and the set was interesting. But Joan Allen was quite shrill, full of over-the-top affectations like lots and lots of "Harumph"s. The music was pedestrian, annoyingly cute and predictable, as was the story. Scene changes were also quite clunky, and a bit insulting,... read more, beating the audience over the head w/ obvious themes using LOTS of directly related paintings. And some secondary characters were 100% cliche, which I can only guess appealed to the audience because they were comfortable with seeing the same old thing. However, it wasn't a total waste of time; there were some nice moments, especially from Jeremy Irons, and some great lines here and there. If seeing BIG NAME STARS in a comfortable, non-risky play is your thing, then this is for you, and it will offer plenty of feel-good moments. But if you're looking to be challenged, to grow, to think, then skip this and see something else, like "August in Osage County." |

Worth seeing Review by: fanciulla5, Mar 28, 2009 |
| I saw Impressionism a few days before it opened, and loved it, as did the rest of the audience that afternoon, at least those within earshot of me. Though the play has its share of darkness and pain, they aren't reveled in, but are treated with compassion and wit. The play is adult, romantic, funny, hopeful, life-affirming, and beautifully performed by a cast of talented actors. It is well worth seeing. |

Impressionism as Finger Painting Review by: timbo, Mar 26, 2009 |
| Great actors. Potentially interesting subject. Facile themes. Improbable motivations. Deadly dialogue. As much as I love theater, and especially plays about art (I saw the first productions of Stanley, Art, Sight Unseen) this one is breathtakingly vapid. What script were the actors reading to accept this? It can't have been the play I saw? |
