incredibly brilliant performances by all 3 actors Review by: , Apr 16, 2011 |
| Saw this show tonight from the 4th row. The acting is absolutely brilliant. The young boy that plays the lead character is not to be missed. Very, Very moving. |

Disappointing Collection of Cliches Review by: screenguy, Apr 13, 2011 |
Because the script is filled with so many cliches, "High" never really finds a unique voice. Kathleen Turner plays a down-to-earth nun who cusses and admits to being a recovering alcoholic. Her monologues to the audience are entertaining but shed little light on the character and differ so much in tone from the rest of the play that I often felt I was just watching the actress rather than the character. The character of the 19-year-old ... read more drug addict/prostitute boy is imbued with so many quirks and so much After-School-special background, I never found a way into his character even when I admired the work the actor was doing. Sadly, because of the way the play has been written and directed, he and Ms. Turner have very little chance to develop chemistry between them. Their scenes together are so cliched I started hearing their dialog in my mind before they actually said it. The couple of times the play surprised me, it did so in a bad way, leading Ms. Turner's character to make choices and statements that seemed illogical and dulled the action rather than heightening it. There are a couple of graphic scenes of drug use that seemed to affect some people in the audience, but those scenes have been done more honestly and in more interesting context numerous times on Law and Order. If you are a recovering addict, you are likely to be moved by the simplicity of messages like, "Getting sober is easy. Staying sober is hard." But even then, you may not be able to tolerate the utter predictability of this mediocre show. The set was interesting, with panels that floated into place like clouds, and minimum furniture. The lighting tried to be lyrical and edgy, but the prolonged use of the footlights in a couple of scenes became comical rather than dramatic. |

Not transported by High Review by: Don, Apr 12, 2011 |
| The basic story is compelling, but the playwright seemed to be stating ideas rather than letting us observe behavior and discover the characters' motivations by what they were not saying. The performance by the young addict seemed surface and intent on showing us what an addict is, rather than hiding his true feeling, which is what the addict really does. The nudity seemed gratuitous. Kathleen Turner has great stage presence but I felt her ... read more looking for her best pose and light rather than becoming the character. I am sure that the performers feel they are experiencing the event, but it was all too obvious. Considering the nature of the dialogue, the fault is not theirs alone. I also wonder at the propriety of the author's thanking his sponsor in the credits. |

good Review by: craigj, Apr 4, 2011 |
| The show is pretty good... the story is simple, but I've been thinking about it for a few days since I saw, enough to write a review. It definitely made me think and I agree with the other reviews on this site. The young guy is really talented and Kathleen is Kathleen. |

Review by: , Mar 31, 2011 |
The play was good but needs to be focused and sharpened -Its too bad that this play is not better than it is because the playwrights vision is close... but... 1) his devise of using a nun to help the addict needs redefining...their trust and camaraderie happens too fast ...during the early moments I started to feel manipulated because the sharp and witty dialogue was not coming organically out of the situation or the true seed ... read more of the relationship...the playwright seems confused with this relationship so therefore the impact is not as strong as it could be (or as strong as we have seen in other much better plays that have explored similar themes) 2) The actor who plays Cody was good but I disagree with the review that stated you loose him inside the character. My problem is I did not loose him enough - his heavy street speech patterns and forced shaking never went far enough to loose the pretty boy actor who would fit better being on a television show like 90210. Kathleen Turner is strong and the actor who plays the priest gives an honest performance (its difficult to flesh out a character like this one) This is a good play that could be great - its close - but needs to explore the relationship between the sponsor and the addict in a more honest and less showy manner. I attended "High" a night that they had a talk back after the performance. The playwright discussed how his past inspired him to write this play ... knowing that information - its surprising that the play is so convoluted. |

see this show this kid is gonna be a star Review by: miloprah, Mar 29, 2011 |
| This play was really good. Mostly because of the kid, Evan Jonigkeit. He was really amazing. I really hope he gets recognition for his part in this play. The story is a little convoluted but I didn't realize it until after the show cause I was waiting for him to come back on stage and see what he was gonna do next. I hope the show makes it to the tonys for his sake. |

Possibly THE greatest new play on Broadway Review by: quizking101, Mar 28, 2011 |
The subject matter, and the prospect of *SPOILER* full frontal male nudity, definitely sounds touchy to most. But if you go in an see this play with an open mind, you will be changed. This was a very well written piece and, with Kathleen Turner and her acerbic, yet witty personality, the show comes to life in full force. Evan Jonigkeit also makes a smashing debut as Cody, a drug addict with a marred past and grim future. He nails his character ... read more with such perfection, that I actually forgot he was acting. The story whips the mind back and forth and you end up with your jaw hanging in shock for more than five minutes at a time. I personally recommend this to anyone and everyone (16 and up). Rating 10/10 |
