Vulgar Show - Thanks Sally for Telling the Truth on BroadwayBox! Review by: BroadwayBabySawIt, Dec 12, 2009 |
| Wow, Thank You Sally for telling it like it is about Hair! It is amazing to me that anyone who does not like this show gets attacked or told to change, what is going on here? Freedom of speech, people! The truth is that Sally is absolutely right, this is not a good show at all, it's hyped as life-affirming, but it's really about hate and selfishness, and putting down anyone who looks different. We were looking for the door about 20 minutes ... read more into it, and so sorry that we went. Rude, vulgar, so disappointing, and really ugly to listen to and look at. We had an empty seat beside us and one of the actors came along the aisle and asked us who was missing, as if we were responsible for the empty seat! When we said we did not know, he rubbed himself and his hair/wig? on my friend, who made the mistake of attending just after work, so he was wearing a suit - anyone who looks business like is in trouble at this show, you will be made part of it whether you like it or not. We left as fast as we could, at intermission, and we were so happy to get away. We did not appreciate any part of it, and we cannot believe that this is passing as a Broadway show, it is more like a really bad college review, except that most of those have real talent working on them now. If you like having a stranger making fun of you and abusing you without your permission, being used as props to bring some life to a bad show, and feeling that you have completely wasted your money at a show, then this is for you. Otherwise, be smart and stay away! There are great shows on Broadway, like South Pacific, Wicked and Memphis, spend your time and money much more wisely at one of those! |

I Believe in Love...and Hair Review by: Shell, Dec 10, 2009 |
| First of all you need to go into this show knowing that it is not a typical musical! It doesn't follow a strict plot, its just free. It reflects the time period its set in! Sure it has sexual overtones but thats what it was like in that period. The talent is incredible and you can tell that the cast loves one another. The show emphasizes love and tolerance. Just go enjoy and let the spirit take over your soul. Even if your not a fan of the story ... read more recognize how incredible the cast is. This show is truly unlike any other show on Broadway! I mean what other show has you on stage dancing with the cast!? |

Not a vulgar show -- groundbreaking and part of musical history Review by: CharlotteCat, Dec 7, 2009 |
I saw Hair recently and loved it, and felt the need to respond to Sally's recent posting. Hopefully she sees this. Sally, you are right that this show has profanity, drugs, and numerous sexual references, not to mention irreverance for the flag and country and probably other perceived faults. I understand it doesn't suit everyone, and you're right that it's probably inappropriate for children. That said, I do wish you would consider ... read more this show in its historical context. This is a wonderful "snapshot" of the hippie counter-culture and sexual revolution of the 1960s. It opened in 1967-68, so this is not some after-the-fact vision of what the 60s might have been like; this IS the 60s seen in song, dance, dialogue, and costume. Several songs became anthems of the anti-war movement, and a few rank among the greatest in Broadway musical history. You can dislike those times and trends, but they are part of our country's history, and depicted with remarkable honesty and innovation on the stage, both in the original version and this 2008-9 revival. I, too, am in my 30s and was originally suprised by what I was seeing on stage. But, I soon came to think that's exactly why Hair is so exciting and ground-breaking. I think if you had approached this with an open mind, and perhaps a bit more information on the historical roots of the show, you might have appreciated the show more. |

Vulgar show! Review by: sally, Dec 6, 2009 |
First let me say upfront that I am younger person (30 years old), non-religious (atheist) and participated in theater in college (stage manager/director). I was truly horrified by the vulgarity in the first couple of minutes of “Hair”. I went with my mother, aunt, husband and Grandmother! I wish that I had found reviews before attending that were honest about the content of the show. In the first 5 minutes one of the lead cast members - ... read more Berger pulls off his jeans and proceeds to dry hump people in the audience and then stands over an older gentleman and drapes the tassels from his loincloth on the man’s bald head until the man gives him a 20 dollar bill. We were shocked! This was something I would have expected from an X-rated comedy club not a Broadway show that I paid $100+ per ticket. On top of the vulgarity (simulated sexual acts throughout the first act), the storyline was weak and the songs were disappointing. We went to the show believing that we would see some popular songs from the 70’s, but aside from a few songs, most were as vulgar as the play itself and seemed to trail off without concluding. Perhaps if I had known the story before attending, I would have understood the fragmented nature of the play. The nudity in the play did little to really contribute to the story, except was more for the shock value. Didn’t bother me as much as the simulated sexual acts. My husband and I decided to leave after the first act as we felt it was better to be outside in the cold rain walking around New York than suffering through the second act. The others stayed for the remainder of the performance. There were several children at this show and I wonder what the parents thought about exposing their children to such a play. Also, I was shocked to hear that the cast received a standing ovation at the end – my family mentioned that they were the only ones not standing. Overall, my recommendation is to understand the story and what to expect before attending so you won’t be shocked. Not a play I would recommend to any other family or friends!

Not for me Review by: Selruz, Nov 15, 2009 |
| I am sorry to say, I just wasn't feeling it. The production and acting were great, but there wasn't enough of a storyline to keep my interest. I found myself just waiting for it to be over. Too bad...I wanted to love it. |

Good, but not the best Review by: , Nov 3, 2009 |
| I can understand why 95% of the people like it, but I thought the production was a mess and below the standards of Broadway. The few great numbers in the score really carry the show, and the rest is ho hum. The book doesn't really go anywhere coherently and the choreography isn't really dancing, but just a lot of moving around. I wasn't really sure what to make of 21st century 20-somethings trying to play 60's hippies. It never worked for me. If ... read more you're looking for the best of Broadway, this isn't it. |

Hair is the Ultimate theatrical experience Review by: BobsViews, Oct 21, 2009 |
| "Hair" is the only show that I’ve ever seen that felt like an experience. The cast aka The Tribe is excellent, the production is fantastic and the songs sound better then ever. The shows themes (Sex, War, Drugs, Race) are as relevant today as they were forty years ago. The best part is the bond that the Tribe forms with the audience. It resonates with everyone long after they’ve left the theater. I urge all theatergoers to order tickets, ... read more participate in the show and dance in the finale. You will never forget the "Hair" experience. |

Come ready to dance with Joy! Review by: Kim, Oct 6, 2009 |
| This show, for me(a child of the 60's and 70's)was a must. Loved the movie, and music and talk my friend into attending the Sunday afternoon show before a Sunday evening show whe already had tickets for. I loved it! She loved it! The cast was so in the moment that the audience time traveled along for the trip. Beautiful voices singing wonderful songs and dancing the perfect choreography- the Tony's got it right. ... read more Also- the venue was a perfect match for this show. Could have been better Review by: Rob, Oct 4, 2009 |
| It was not bad, but quite a disappointment after seeing the production in the park. I am not sure why they thought they had to “dumb it down” for Broadway. Burger’s antics at the state of the first act were just silly, had no relevance to the story and were not particularly spontaneous. They also omitted much of the dialog from the first act which caused much of the remaining dialog to have less meaning. Did they think that a 3 hour show was ... read more too long? However, the cast was great as were the songs. Probably would have enjoyed it more had I not known what it could have been. |

Powerful abd Thought Provoking Review by: GraceAnn, Sep 23, 2009 |
| Loved it. Cast is very energetic, entertaining and interactive. The voices of the cast members are amazing. Topics such as war, drugs and life decisions are just as relevant today as they were is 1967. Powerful and thought provoking-especially last scene. |

Greatly Spirited Cast Sing a Glorious Pop-Rock Score! Review by: JB, Sep 5, 2009 |
| Very entertaining, thoughtful show performed with great zeal by the cast. What really makes this show is the score. Its book (the dialogue) is not actually all that good, but no matter -- the songs and great enthusiasm and energy from the cast make this a well worthwhile expenditure. For those who have never seen this show or only seen amateur productions, it's terrific having strong performances from pretty much everyone in the cast. I have ... read more some minor quibbles with certain aspects relating to authenticity of the times being portrayed (e.g, no facial hair, mostly buff bodies, everyone looking way too squeaky clean, brazilian landscaping, etc,), but again, the pluses of this production are so strong, I highly recommend it. |
